I hope douhie has been told to bomb every now and then, it almost got us over against them earlier in the year! Fergo might still
Be out and the hooker will be other. That won’t help the spine! So smash Moses, Dylan and gutho and send bombs to all 3 backs! I would target waqaa Blake, he’s strong in attack but defence wise he is woeful! Come on boys let’s get this W
As long as it is only a now and a then, as we got a result from what, one of those bombs and for mine lost that match in a large part because overall it was an ineffective strategy. It mightn't be as entertaining, but leaving nearly all of the standard kicking to Brooks, with both dropping it further forward for field position works much better and was writing similar here at the time.
Whilst many were going "oooooow" and hoping for a result, I was going "ohhhh no, not again, what are we doing", with the game slipping away as we routinely gave up good field position after Ferguson missed one.
A team can only afford that style of kick a couple of times a game, unless near the try line, with the crossfield kicks often more effective anyway and glad that Maguire worked it out eventually as well.
The problem with a spiral bomb is it is normally caught with your momentum going forward. This means that as soon as a player catches it, they have speed in their run. They can return the ball at pace and gain easy metres. The spiral is also hard to catch if you have to run some distance to get it. This is because it can be hard to judge where it will land.
Whereas an up-and-under bomb, when executed correctly, should have the defender moving backwards. They have to take a moment to catch the ball, then gather their momentum to make a run.
Cooper Cronk was the master of knowing when to execute these types of kicks. 98% of the time he would go for a regulation bomb. The other 2% was when his team desperately needed a result, or if he spotted a huge gap between one of the back three.
So yeah, the normal bomb is a higher percentage option. The spiral needs to be kicked away from the fullback. This can be hard as the bomb can easily go wrong and end up out on the full.
