NSW State of Origin legend Ben Elias has sparked the fuse ahead of game one on Wednesday, telling the Maroons to expect a Blues side that will "make those floods back in Queensland ... look like an absolute mimic".
>
Speaking to Fox Sports News at the inaugural 'Blue tie' dinner at Darling Harbour, Elias sledged the Queenslanders, calling them "cocky" and "confident" before declaring this is "the turning point" for New South Wales after five series losses.
>
"I was in Queensland last week and I don’t know why we’ll even turn up," Elias said sarcastically.
>
"Up there, they’ve won five series in a row; they’ve got Mal (Meninga) as a super coach; (Darren) Lockyer’s finale. They’re just going to go through the motions.
>
"I don’t even know why we are even going to put our boots on and go there and take them on.

Elias feels optimistic about the Blues' chances this campaign after five long series on the wrong end of the scoreboard.

"This is the turning point. It has to be. Ricky Stuart (is) at the helm, (it’s) very, very professional," Elias told Fox Sports News.

"For the first time for a long, long time I can say honestly the young kids are going to do something special."

Elias also implored New South Wales fans to step up and turn up in their droves.

"It will, without a doubt it has to. When I walk in and I see Terry Randall and Graham Eadie, they were my heroes growing up ... it has to have an effect.

"In Queensland, they sold out two games in record time; we have yet to sell out ours for stadium for game two, support on and off the field has to come from all around New South Wales. I plead to them, let’s get behind the boys."

FORMER NSW star Benny Elias has apologised for comparing State of Origin football to the Queensland floods.
>
Elias told The Daily Telegraph today that he was deeply sorry a comment he made at a NSW black tie dinner at Star City was misunderstood.
>
A former Balmain and Australian hooker, Elias has sparked the fuse ahead of game one on Wednesday night, telling the Maroons to expect a Blues side that will "make those floods back in Queensland ... look like an absolute mimic".
>
But Elias was today upset he had offended Queenslanders affected by the tragic floods.
>
"I understand some comments I made on Thursday night about Queensland at a NSW State of Origin dinner were misunderstood. I am a passionate Blues supporter and genuinely love this time of year," Elias said.

"I've always felt the barbs and banter between the two states adds to the theatre of State of Origin.
>
"But if a comment I made about the Queensland floods was misinterupted then I genuinely apologise.
>
"I, like the rest of the world, watched on in horror at what unfolded in Queensland during the New Year floods.
>
"I would hate to be seen as being flippant about such a terrible event. I also hope the NSW-Queensland rivalry never dies. It is what Origin is built on.
>
"If I caused offence, I am sorry. It certainly wasn't personal. I will always be passionate at Origin time. Next Wednesday will be no different."
>
Elias told Fox Sports News at the function on Thursday night that Queensland was "cocky" and "arrogant".

I like Benny but he's one of those people like Mundine who should be off limits to the journo's when it comes to a quote, they always put their foot in their mouth and it comes back to bite them later on.

Im sure this comment isnt great for the flood victims, but gee, in the context of the spin he was giving is it really that big of a deal? We all know what crap he was banging on and to make this more than what it is would be like being…well....a friggin QLDer.

Bad comment by Elias.
But I love how Ennis tries to be the hero at the end of the day

NSW State of Origin hooker Michael Ennis has emotionally drawn on a life-changing visit to flood-ravaged Queensland to distance the Blues from controversial comments made by former player Benny Elias.
>
Ennis approached NSW officials and asked if he could address remarks from Elias comparing the flood disaster to next Wednesday's Origin opener at Suncorp Stadium.
>
Elias on Friday apologised for the comments, made at a function organised by former Blues Origin players on Thursday night.
>
Ennis spent time in Queensland earlier this year on community visits with his NRL club Canterbury.
>
"It changed my life, some of the stuff that I saw up there, and I don't think you can even compare a footy game," Ennis told reporters at Blues training on Friday.
>
"At the end of the day it's a footy game compared with people's livelihoods and some of the things that were destroyed and people's lives that were torn apart.
>
"It was devastating, it was a war zone.
>
"People lost their lives, I met mothers and fathers that lost their children and still talking about it now isn't something that I'm a hundred per cent comfortable with.
>
"But I think that out of the group of guys that we've got here today, I was the one that experienced the most feelings and pain, I suppose, from that experience so I thought it was best for me to probably talk about it."
>
Elias made the comments towards the end of an interview with Fox Sports News at the Origin Legends Blue Tie Ball.
>
"They are so cocky, they are so confident, they believe that they're bullet-proof and I can assure you there's something coming up there," Elias said.
>
"They're going to make these floods … look like an absolute mimic when it comes to us coming up there because we're going to certainly create a massive storm."
>
Often cast as the niggling villain for Maroons fans, Ennis was determined to dismiss the remarks.
>
"I'm extremely disappointed in terms of what I saw and the relationships that I've built with some people up there," he said.
>
"I think it was uncalled for."
>
Ennis said any suggestion Queensland would use Elias' words as motivation was inappropriate.
>
"It's got nothing to do with what we're going to do on next Wednesday night and the job that Ricky's going to set for us," he said.
>
Elias played in a former Origin players' floods fundraiser and said he had been involved in "seven or eight" other relief events.
>
He rang a Sydney radio station on Friday morning to apologise.
>
"If it was all personal, too personal, I would never have got involved and helped the Queenslanders," he told the Austereo network.
>
"I've got a personal letter from their premier, Anna Bligh, saying thanks for your support."
>
But Elias was also adamant he had been taken out of context.
>
"It was a tongue in cheek thing, it was nothing more, nothing less," he said.
>
"If they take that out of context and take it seriously I think people really have got to have a good look at themselves."

Eliias, stupid comment.
Ennis, you are a joke. Be yourself for a change.

As a life long Balmain supporter, I'm upset that Benny Elias has just made my list.

What a dog piece of crap. He needs his jaw broken and broken hard. I will join what will be a massive line of people that are iching to do it.

Being passionate is one thing. Being a scum bag who devalues human life is another.

It was a dumb comment made during an off-the-cuff speech which he later apologised for. Some of you guys need to calm down a bit.

I have to agree Yoss. It was a poorly thought out comment but I don't think any red blooded human being would make literal fun of such a tragic humanitarian disaster.

X 2 guys . Had family who completely lost house , but I don't take offence Just a stupid thing to say

I just wish he'd fade away into the distance, he's not doing the blues any good…dunno why he was invited last night, he's a loser.

Its not a big deal in my opinion. Lots of political correct nonsense.

you think that comparing a disaster that killed 20 people and left thousands homeless to a game of football is ok?

I feel sorry for the NSW team…every time they try to prepare for a series, one of their fogs comes out with some braindead comment that derails them.

Honestly, whilst his comments are a massive low blow, I don't see it having an impact on the game as some here are claiming. Look at the Queensland team, plenty of stars, do you really they need to use Benny's comments are fuel to get themselves up for an origin? Probably not.

I agree with this…. Elias looks pathetic and his dribble to justify himself on mmm made him worse...

I agree with this. Premier Bligh has personally thanked Elias for his fundraising efforts in the aftermath of the floods. Benny has friends affected and understands the pain they have gone through. It was a dumb comment. You see the footage and it appears to me his slurring his speech a little and not really knowing what he is about to say.

Yes. Its not a big deal in my opinion.

Yeah I bet all those people who thought they were insured and are still living out of cars, tents ,caravans or living on the streets think its not a big deal either Tiger05 .
