Drug & Match Fixing Scandal in Sport

The skilled park discovery sounds a little suss to me. Police were performing a training exercise and discover the vials on the same day that the drug story breaks. It all just sounds a little too convenient.

Yeah, obviously been tipped off where to find them, same with officials of the Bombers in Melb.as they run around trying to cover their backsides.
All pro. sport teams push the envelope, what concerns me is way they(most NRL Clubs) bulk up the kids and expect fans to believe its all due to Vitamin supplements and Weight Training.

Is there any way of knowing whose samples they are if they tested positive? its not like theres any DNA in urine is there?

Anyway, you would think the idiots would have flushed any dodgy samples down the toilet instead of hiding them. What was the motive for keeping them?

They might push the envelop , but most clubs will be doing it legally

Something that some people need to understand that when you first start a professionally set up weight program you develop muscle mass quickly

I personally put about 18kg of muscle on in just under 3 years when i first started out in the gym when I got serious about wanting to become a footballer I was fortunate as had a frame that readily could put mass on

Mate ,I think these samples may have been masking samples that could be used to cover people's samples that weren't clean

It would be the only reason you would keep them

You wouldn't keep samples that where illegal

Always been suspect about Manly and how their forwards were so strong, and how they managed to be dominant and always get a roll-on.

Perhaps they were just better players, perhaps not. Time will tell.

people who think this is just a cover up or a planned distraction to take the focus off other people or other events have their head in the sand or have been looking at to many movies.

Their will be officals, coaches, players and clubs that will take a massive hit over the next six months. My guess the players will be the ones who will take the biggest hit as they are the ones who are most vulnerable. Anyway this is no big cover up, its for real

I agree, the majority of the conditioning work & supplements given are legit but there is a dark side and its grown into an industry as athletes & coaches look for an edge to save or prolong their careers.

I don't believe it is a cover up.

I do however think the timing of the announcement is conveniently timed, especially when the ACC admits themselves they have limited if any real evidence in some cases. It is a fishing expedition and puts a cloud over all proffessional sport until it all comes out in the wash

Agreed. We are a sports mad nation and the reporting on this I find terrible as there is no evidence, just a he said/ she said mentality. All professional sportspeople in Oz are now guilty until proven innocent. The release of this info will be very destructive and if there arent numerous cases proven, this blokes head should be stuck on the flagpole of parliament house.

I think supplements and what they contain is the big worry for the NRL,lots of rumours the last few years about whats going on as the shady gym/fitness gurus became involved with NRL & AFL clubs.
I think Soccer(Goalkeepers & Referees) & Cricket(Bowlers) have the most to fear re fixing or influencing a result. The Vict. deputy Police Commissioner said one legal Asian bookmaker had a declared A$40+ million hold on one Melbourne A League game, whilst some of that would be money laundring its a mind boggling figure a and means a player would be set for life for just one indiscretion but of cause the crims won't let you off the hook once they get you the first time.

Have you seen the recent TV commercial where Shane Watson talks about "getting the edge". Obviously what ever it was he was advertsiing was quite legitimate, However modern day sports is all about getting the edge over your competitors, Logically you can only go so far in using legitimate products. When your competitors have also reached that point the next step is to use illegitimate products. That's where the trouble is.

Who remembers the 'Heighno - man of the match' drama?

Yeh, I believe its naive to think this is simply some sort of smokescreen

The match fixing allegations have made me think about the disgraceful standard of refereeing we saw in the latter part of the yr last season. Remember how many teams got robbed week after week, us included. The Cowboys had their season ended on some disgraceful calls. I thought at the time that it felt like something not quite right was going on, and now we have these accusations. Hmm

Yes, some of those decisions were impossible to get wrong, especially with the aid of numerous slow-mo review angles. Yet, somehow they still got them wrong! It was suspect then and even more suss now.

Which has no changed from vials of urine to one jar of urine

Hell they could of been saving it to throw on Bird

I tend to think that the authorities know a lot less than they are letting on. This is a large scale bluff off the back of the scandal at Essendon (to make that look like the tip of the iceberg), and they are trying to scare players and officials into coming forward. If they have names and proof, then why are they wanting more people to come forward?

The match fixing stuff is fairly concerning, one thing about it is, if it is happening, it will be matches and events that you don't suspect. When they announced 1 UCL game in England was suspicious a lot of people were sure it was a certain match but it turned out to be a game where Liverpool beat a Hungarian side 1-0, which was pretty much what was expected.

The story about urine vials to me does not make any sense. Whilst I have never been drug tested, I have a mate who has had it done before, and he said there isn't a moment where the tester is not watching you. Unless the testers for the NRL are not as strict, then I don't see how it would be possible to pull the old switcheroo.

When the Lance Armstrong story broke some months back and every man and his dog 'were giving it' to the world of cycling, I said that if other sports did half the amount of testing that cycling does, then we would be seeing a whole heap of sports come under the cloud of doping. Unfortunately, it looks like this is starting to happen. Throw in rowing, any of the alpine sports, American football (of course) - any sport you care to name. Get serious about testing and you'll find drugs! It's a sad indictment on professional sport and the 'need' to gain a competitive edge over your foes regardless of the morals/ethics involved in gaining such an advantage.
I applaud the efforts being made by the anti doping agencies throughout sport. I hope it continues with increased vigor. I fear, however, it will always be too little too late.

Yeah,Fahey said sometime back that Urine testing, whilst better than nothing, was just a cop out for administrators in some sports to look they were doing something.Blood testing & blood passports are the minimum these days and you will still not catch the Testerone & Peptides users unless they are complete dunces.

I agree totally Basil. Biological passports are a 'must' if any sport/code is serious about stamping out drugs. it has been the single biggest step towards cleaning up cycling over the past few years since it's inception.

have been subjected to urine testing.
as previously mentioned, when you go to provide a sample, a person is with you all the time, to ensure you can't alter the sample in any way.
so to prove a point, that I had nothing to hide, I stood side on , so they could see the bottle fill.
never heard back from them.

as for match fixing, IMO the only way to try and stop/reduce this is to stop/prohibit all types of betting on games.
