Dud Ref Calls Every Game - What Is The Problem?

Seems like we're getting dud ref calls against us more often this season than any other that I can recall. Just about every game this year has had us fans blowing up a treat about some ridiculous call or penalty against us that could easily have lost us matches if it weren't for the team digging deep, and I think we have only won the penalty count in a game twice all season! So what the heck is going on here? I know that the refs are making inexcusable errors, overall, this season, but how come it is WT that seem to be on the wrong end of it in every game they play? I can only think of 2 reasons for this.

1\. There some sort of conspiracy against our team succeeding this season - highly unlikely, but the way things are with betting rorts these days, you can't count it out either.

2\. We are an extremely ill-disciplined team every time we take the field.

If number 2 is the correct answer, then something needs to be done to fix this asap, otherwise it is going to cost us big time as the season progresses. The team cannot keep having to dig in like they did today, in every single match, only to scramble home by a couple of points against bottom placed sides, all because of the heavy weight of penalties and ref calls going against us all the time. Something has to change or it will eventually take it's toll on the team - in fact, it already is with injuries coming thick and fast in every game, due to players working over and above themselves, against the odds.

If it is more a case of a refereeing bias against us, then Potter needs to grow a set and say something out loud - not enough of a rant that will get him fined, but enough to let the officials know that he can see what's happening and he will make some waves if it continues. At present, he is not saying anything!

One of the good things that Sheens always did when he felt the team was being dudded once too often, was that he would organise a meeting with the refs and their boss, before and after matches, to air his grievances and get some clarity on rule interpretation etc. This worked well, as in the next few matches WT would, generally, win the penalty count and get the 50/50 calls go their way. I think it would be wise if Potter could try a similar tact, because the calls against us, in just about every game now, are getting ridiculous and it will cost us our season if it allowed to continue.

I just think they are bad. They have no leadership, no confidence, no consistency. The video refs are a complete joke and disgrace. It is an embarrassment for the code.

Since we have been at the bottom for a couple of years maybe we cop a few more rough ones. However other teams are getting dudded in the same fashion every week, we just don't notice.

I feel like switching off games at times the refs are so deplorable. It seems to get worse every year. I have no idea what they do, but they need a total rethink.

We've really only been right at the bottom for one year, Eddie - last year. Teams like Parramatta, Cronulla, Penrith and Canberra have been below us more often and they don't get the same amount of bad calls that we do, on a regular basis. The only ones that would compete with us for bad calls would be the Roosters and Cowboys, so I don't think it's anything to do with being a bottom placed team. None of it is making any sense, but something will have to change soon or we're gone for this season.

Just got home from the game and watched the replays. How was the try against Anasta given??? Body on top of ball in goal. Grounded. Simple.

The only positive out of it though is I had a little bet on Knights/Tigers HT/FT. Won me some spending money for the long weekend

Must have and thanks for explaining it to the rest of us.

The best part is it has shown we have a bit of metal. Teams of the past have rolled over.

I agree , back in the sheens days and with you know who still playing for us , we would've rolled over many times this year I reckon .
Roll on tigers !

When I saw the title of the thread I wrongly thought it meant that the standard of refereeing across the board was atrocious which it is. Every team cops it, not just us. Try being the Cowboys in the finals the last 2 yrs.

I must admit, Ashley Klein is usually pretty fair but he pinned us a bit today.

It could have been heaps worse with the likes of Gavin Badger.. Cant stand him !
Shane Hayne also frustrates me when he is the referee in our game.

Thankfully (Or it was Karma) that we won today regardless of the call(s)

I have no issues with the Anasta try, he lost control of the ball as he landed on his face. Never grounded it as it popped out of his hands into the ground - knock on.

However, this was missed. Hand of Boyd

Ok, since everyone is concentrating on today's game and not really engaging with my OP, I'll shorten it down to a couple of questions.

Do you think we are an ill-disciplined team? Does our approach to each game need to be altered by the coaching staff?

Do you agree that Potter should make a bit of noise about the constant bad ref decisions, a la Sheens, and get some communication happening between the club and the officials?

flip, i think we have to be ill-disciplined. we test the refs and make sure we are holding down as long as possible. if we let them play it quickly, its game over. it works when we play teams like souths and manly who have been getting away with it for years… this weekend will be interesting..

but as a whole, refs are atrocious.

No excluding Taupau. Taupau gives away a dumb penalty or two a game.

Yes.

This year with the nit picking in the play the ball area, in most games a nasty flow of penalties can really go against the defensive team. Meaning if you don't hold onto the ball and are forced to tackle heaps, you are likely to incur many more penalties than before. Holding onto possession, not kicking dead allowing 7 tackles, etc is of utmost importance. Tigers started OK this year, but the last couple of games have been a fumble fest, and they have had their defensive backsides whipped by the refs as a result.

Hold onto the damn ball, stop kicking stupid, and take the nit picking penalties out of the refs hands.

I think in previous seasons we were quite capable of losing the game all by ourselves, regardless of the refereeing. It's frustrating this year as we're clinging onto our spot in the 8 and we've played some very tight matches to hang in there. It feels like our season is riding on every call at the moment.

I think it's hard to distance your self from bad calls when they involve your club. We all probably think we are dealt more bad calls, just because we remember them more.

Overall I think the reffing is not so bad. I would like to see 2 changes considered:

1\. For strips where the ref can't tell who did it, just give the ball back and call tackled. They do this for offloads now, why not contentious dropped-balls? It stops players being penalised if they don't actually play at the ball and there is zero advantage for the attacker to milk an illegal steal. Defenders cannot exploit this, clear rakes are clear.

2\. Captain's challenge - this has to be introduced, it will eliminate stupid instances like yesterday where everyone knows there has been a reffing mistake, but we play on because the wrong combination of events prevents the video ref from intervening.

Not much to be done about the actual video ref calls, unless you outlaw the practice they are gonna make mistakes. I thought Anasta grounded the footy with his torso fair and square. But if you watched the Wallabies game on Sat night, the French prevented a try by an off-side play that was somehow justified and permitted by the video ref. That took 5 mins to decide, as bad as any league stoppage.

because the refs are not good enough I have noticed since 2 refs came into being the standard has dropped about 20%, I was watch a game on tv one ref yells milking milking the other ref blows the whistle penalty they cant even work with each other. also since the 2 refs one was to control the ruck there are more forward passes now you think your watching gridiron .I am so sick of the dud calls you feel like not watching

maybe in the 2nd half of the season, wests-tigers will get the benefit, of the 50/50 calls :unamused:

personally, when a goal line drop out is indicated for,I don't see any reason why the video ref's don't have a look at it, whilst the players are getting into position behind the try line.

if the decision needs to be changed, then change it.
