Dwyer won't play again until at least 2013

I guess that is why the Tigers are supposedly chasing Andrew Ryan on a 1 year deal…to cover for the possible loss of Dwyer!

If you do your research you will find that it is a very serious injury . I dont want to bring a downer into this subject but, Simon will be lucky to have normal use of his arm ,let alone be fit enough to play top line league again..

Ps If he does manage to get back on the field it would and should be classed as one the gretest comebacks ever.

Here's Hoping ….

I spoke to a doctor about this, the usual caveat without knowing the specifics of Simon, most will recover fully if given the right treatment, a nerve graft is sometimes required which may have negative effects on strength and range long term, but is often perfect.
His general feeling was that Simon would most likely play again, but how far in the future is anyone's guest.

The flip side is that there a chance that it will never recover

Looks like a very sad situation for him. A sporting tragedy if he never plays again.

To lose Tuiaki and now perhaps Dwyer, to career ending injuries is the worst kind of horrible luck.

Dwyer faces prospect of never playing league again

WESTS Tigers forward Simon Dwyer, one of the NRL's brightest prospects, faces a significant battle to play again after test results indicated he required major surgery to repair nerve damage.
The Sun-Herald understands specialists have told the 22-year-old that he is unlikely to play again, following the results of a ''nerve conduction'' test to assess the damage to nerves in his right shoulder and arm.
Dwyer, who shot to prominence after a tackle on Roosters forward Jared Waerea-Hargreaves in a qualifying final last year, suffered the damage against the Bulldogs in round 16.

But it was Dwyer's very ability to hit hard that contributed to his condition - the sort of brachial plexus damage he suffered in the tackle on Bulldogs forward Michael Hodgson on June 24 is usually seen in high-impact motorbike or skiing collisions. Balancing safety and aggression has been one of the challenges for the Tigers and Dwyer.
Medically, there are few sporting precedents for the club to go by, although the Tigers' medical staff have been researching Dwyer's type of injury since that match against the Bulldogs.
Dwyer, earmarked by Blues coach Ricky Stuart as a future State of Origin player, still does not have full movement in his right hand and arm, and is focused for now on regaining that movement. Only then would he realistically be able to consider playing again. If he has surgery - which involves grafting nerve tissue from another part of his body to the damaged nerve - it is believed Dwyer would not be able to play for several years, if at all.
The results of the conduction tests, carried out on the advice of neurosurgeon Dr Michael Biggs at Royal North Shore Private Hospital just over a week ago, have thrown more scientific doubt on one of the most promising careers in the code.

Simon's is a tough bugger He will overcome this and come back bigger and stronger . What doesn't kills you makes you stronger . Hope to see you back real soon Simon

Geezus, this does not sound good. I wish Simon all the best and I hope that he does defy belief and make a full recovery soon.

P.s. I'm still so ropable at the orders to walk him off!!!

What seriously bad medical judgment considering he was in a neck brace for days. I hope to god that it didn't contribute to it otherwise heads need to roll

his health and well being for remainder of his life are far more important than playing a game of footy.

need to remember after all, it is a game.

Hope he is given every possible chance of a full recovery and a spot in the Tigers team.

Hope he comes gud i have a feeling he will be bak ready next year just gl dywer we all love u at the tigers :D

Simons health is obviously the most important issue here, but I don't take everything the papers say as gospel. Hope to see him back in tigers Colours soon

No stone will lay unturned in his efforts to get back on the field, but at the end of the day its only football and your health is everything. He is young enough to head off in another direction in life, but I think he will be back, just strikes me as a bloke who might be able to prove a few doc's wrong

It was never a neck spinal injury - It was established weeks ago that they knew that before he walked off.

LATEST NEWS ON SIMON DWYER

31/07/2011 9:21:25 AM

Wests Tigers can now provide the latest news on injured second-rower Simon Dwyer.

Already ruled out for the remainder of this season, Simon suffered a brachial plexus injury as a result of a heavy impact collision against Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs at Campbelltown Stadium last month.

Wests Tigers CEO Stephen Humphreys said Dwyer would undergo nerve graft surgery in coming weeks.

“Simon is facing major surgery and a long and challenging rehabilitation. Whilst his future remains uncertain, Simon continues to be very positive and his great courage and the strength of his character are an inspiration to us all,’’ Humphreys said.

“His family and friends are providing him with wonderful support as are all of his team-mates.

“Wests Tigers will do everything possible to assist Simon's recovery from this devastating injury.

“Our singular focus right now is on Simon’s well being and so, we all need to be patient and take things one step at a time. That's the way Simon is approaching the challenge and that's the way it has to be.”

Dwyer said he appreciated the well wishers of the rugby league community.

“Coach Tim Sheens has been a big inspiration to me on and off the field,’’ Dwyer said.

“During my hospitalisation and rehabilitation, he has given me great support through regular visits, phone calls and has also gone to the extent of researching information on my injury.

“Wests Tigers continue to be very supportive with my welfare and rehabilitation.

“My manager Gavin Orr has also been very supportive in ensuring I am comfortable and remain positive.”

Hopefully the surgery is a success. I wish Simon and his family all the best in recovering from such a serious injury.
