ELIJAH Taylor has never been one to cause a scene.
>
Mild in his manner, Taylor prefers to be patient when dealing with his problems.
>
But when he remained unsigned at the Wests Tigers deep into November, he knew something had to change.
>
It’s why Taylor went over his manager’s head and finalised his deal at the Tigers himself.
>
“That was the first time I’ve done that,” Taylor said.
>
“But after starting the off-season and a deal still wasn’t put to bed, you’ve got to get things done yourself I suppose.

\
“In the off-season I left it up to my manager to sort out a new deal, but it was taking a really long time.
>
“It came to November and it still wasn’t done, so I just had to step up and do it and I finally got it done.
>
“I just called Justin Pascoe (CEO) and had a very open and honest discussion in his office and it was good.
>
“It took a lot longer than I thought, but I’m very glad to have it over and done with.
**“It’s a one year deal with an option for 2018 in my favour, so I’m pretty happy.”**
>
Taylor’s contract extension with the Tigers caps off an eventful season for the Kiwi-born back-rower.
>
After starting the year in reserve grade at Penrith, he fought hard to resurrect his career at the Tigers.
>
Taylor played 15 games for the joint-venture club, cementing himself as one of the team’s most consistent performers.
>
It’s a remarkable turnaround the unassuming forward doesn’t take for granted.
>
“At the start of the year I didn’t even like league at all,” he said.
>
“But I got the lifeline from the Tigers who gave me another opportunity.
>
“We have a lot of potential as a team and a lot of people don’t realise that.
>
“But in our core group of players we’ve got a lot of belief and we are training really hard to make sure we fulfil our potential.”
\
\
Taylor has signed a one-year extension with an option in his favour.
The raw talent at the Tigers was a major reason why Taylor wanted to stay at the club.
>
He had interest from rugby union, but says league was always his first priority.
>
“The Tigers set-up, the coaching and support staff and trainers are world class and I really wanted to work with them,” he said.
>
“That made the decision a lot easier.
>
“Rugby was an option, but I wasn’t as close as lot of people thought I was.”
>
Taylor now has his sights set on regaining his position in the New Zealand Test side after missing out on selection for the Four Nations.
>
“You want to be in that Kiwi team and I was pretty gutted not making it,” he said.
>
“To be told by the selectors that you had a great season with the Tigers and you played really well, but we are heading in another direction.
>
“That’s pretty shattering. But it just makes me want to work harder and I’ve just got to focus on the Tigers now and play as well as I can.”

If Milky is right he doesn't need to be re-signed yet. The club has an option in their favour for next year so he will be here unless we don't want him, and that won't be the case.

Better to just extend his contract now and get some stability for the future. Don't want to have to go through another contract saga next year.

I was at the function and asked him when he would sort out his future (thinking he had the option in his favour) and he said it's up to the club. I said isn't the option in your favour and he was surprised and said no it's in the clubs. He seemed keen to stay, was thankful he was away from Penrith. He also said the homesick story was wrong. I can't see him leaving. For what it's worth he wants to get into real estate sales when he leaves football.

I asked if he is happy with the balance in his game (attack v defence) and he said yes. He doesn't want to do 62 tackles per game but does cause we keep dropping the ball. I asked if the guys who drop the ball during the game drop it in training and not surprisingly they do.

He's a class act and would be a great captain.

Legend, thanks for clarity!

This guy always gives his all a real team player and with Woods moving on he would make a great Captain , Lawrence is also a great club man so maybe they can be dual captains as I now think with these 2 players leading the way and the likes of Big Ben and Packer we have guys that will help they young fellows out , Josh will work with Brooks as well I think as Brooks will have to lead us and Josh will have to to the grubby in your face stuff , I'm looking forward to a good season next year but I haven't given up on a fair finish this year

To go to Elijah, and offer him new terms for busting his backside since he's been here would be a good sign to all the players that you play hard you get rewarded. It would create good incentive and good security.

From what ive seen of him so far hes the type of bloke you build a club around….seems like a champion bloke...i would love to have him as captain....total contrast to 3 others

When Cleary was coach at Penrith he had already ear-marked him as a future captain ,at that clib,Im sure nothing has changed, now that both have been re-united at the tigers.

This was on nrl.com today…

"I signed with the Tigers for this year and next year was an option season so I need to take that up by Round 13.

"I'm encouraged by what we're doing here and the new direction with Ivan [Cleary] and the players he's recruiting so my future is something we're working on now."

I was at the members function and he told me directly that the option was in the clubs favour. Who knows what's going on!

Well, compare him to our current captain. He seems perpetually confused.
