Ellis demands respect for Tigers pack

For too long the Wests Tigers have been viewed as a flashy team built around their brilliant stars Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah.
>
Powerful English back-rower Gareth Ellis enjoys watching Marshall sidestep around the opposition and benefits more than most from Farah's clever dummy-half runs.
>
But the 106kg forward has had enough of "the flashy Tigers" and reckons 2011 will be the year the NRL finally recognises the power of the their pack.
>
"Without a doubt (we can make a dent on the competition), forwards play a big role in today's game and this season will be no different," Ellis said on Tuesday.
>
"The key for our pack is that it's very fit and mobile and that's the thing we play on.
>
"We did a lot of good things last year and we're entering this year playing with a lot of belief.
>
"Hopefully we can expand on what we did last year."
>
And while Marshall grabs the headlines, and is undeniably the king of the kids, the fact remains that in his two seasons at the club, Ellis has earned two player of the year honours.
>
Before him, lock forward Chris Heighington had a stranglehold on the award.
>
Add fringe Origin prop Keith Galloway, the recently re-signed Bryce Gibbs and up-and-coming front-rower Andrew Fifita and you are on your way to an intimidating unit, with Ellis as their leader.
>
It is not a role the giant Englishman has always taken on willingly, but one he now accepts as his own in the underrated pack.
>
"Leadership is something that has not always been high on my agenda, I'm pretty quiet and laid back but I like to think my actions can lead rather than my words," Ellis said.
>
"Hopefully some of the things I can do on the field inspire other players, that's what I aim to do.
>
"And we do have a good core group there, Galloway is on the fringe of Origin and Australia, Andrew Fifita is still coming through and Gibbo is a bit of a prankster but he knows when to turn it on.
>
"So the fact that I'm out there the majority of the time for 80 minutes and I'm in the thick of it, I do see myself as a leader on the field definitely."

Expecting a huge year from Gareth this season….as I am from all the forwards.

Great to hear him talking this way.

until last year the forward pack didnt deserve respect.

admittedly that had a lot to do with the players being selected in wrong positions (payne, galea and harrison playing prop etc) and tiny benches.

however a pack looking something like:

8\. gibbs
9\. farah
10\. galloway
11\. payten
12\. ellis
13\. heighington

14\. fulton
15\. dwyer
16\. fifita

murdoch-masila
moors
cayless
shirnack
woods
flanagan etc

wont get dictated to by anyone

and we seem to have more depth in the frontrow now aswell

i'd go:

8\. gibbs
9\. farah ©
10\. galloway
11\. ellis
12\. fulton
13\. heighington

14\. murdoch
15\. dwyer
16\. payten
17\. fifita

no oppostion will respect wests-tigers pack until they show no mercy in each game this year.
need to be relentless, continually making yards and cutting down opponents and still going over the top of them.
even when you have the ball.

go hard or go home.

I hope Ellis stays fit and his groin injury is minor so he can be a regular member of the pack as we need him fit and well.

Hungry Tigers will pack a fearsome punch up front, says Ellis
Greg Prichard - Sydney Morning Herald
February 17, 2011

WESTS TIGERS and England second-rower Gareth Ellis has applauded the Bulldogs for talking up their forward pack with the start of the competition only a few weeks away, but declared that he and his fellow big men could match any team in the NRL.

Bulldogs board member and former international Paul Dunn said in yesterday's Herald that the addition of star forwards Frank Pritchard, Greg Eastwood and Aiden Tolman for this season had put ''fear back in the side again for opposition players''.

The theme was continued by Pritchard, who said it would be the aim of he and Eastwood to provide ''more mongrel up the middle'', and giant Bulldogs centre Jamal Idris, who rated the Bulldogs as having ''the best forward pack in the game''.

Advertisement: Story continues below Ellis, who has helped the Tigers reach a new level with his relentless approach since joining the club in 2009, said that if players weren't upbeat about their team's chances now they would never be.

''You wouldn't expect anything else at this time of the year,'' Ellis said. ''We're probably the same, we talk about our forward pack, and rightly so. There's no harm in that at all. There's nothing wrong with being confident about what you've got.

''The forward pack lays the platform, and the Bulldogs have made good signings. They're going to be really exciting to watch, but I think we've got a pretty decent forward pack ourselves. It's a very settled forward pack in that it's been at the Tigers now for at least two or three years. I think some of our forwards - Bryce Gibbs, Keith Galloway, Chris Heighington - have all matured into very close to international players, so we're pretty excited about our prospects this season.''

Ellis, who was speaking while the Tigers visited schools yesterday, said he believed the Tigers had the sort of players in the forwards who could establish an advantage over the opposition as games wore on.

''We're a pretty mobile pack, and I think that will show coming to the back end of games,'' he said. ''I don't think there's a doubt we can match it with any forward pack. We've got a great mix of size, strength and fitness … The good thing for us is the boys have had a real good pre-season, and they're all looking really fit.''

Since the groin injury seems to be ongoing and not settling down, I'm wondering if Ellis playing every 2nd game would help?

Assuming he doesn't aggravate the injury the first game he plays that is.
