Esan Masters Please Stand Up

Madge has mentioned there are players in the team who simply don’t believe in themselves. He has said it before and he said it tonight. I reckon (and it’s just a guess) Marsters could be one of these players. Maybe dropping him would ruin him. I don’t know. Just a thought

The more I think about it he may be a new version of Dene Halatau. He may be better used in the middle. He’s stocky with good power and his lack of speed won’t hurt him at 13.
He just doesn’t have the lateral movement and speed out wide. He can tackle when head on but struggles in space. Whether he can tackle animals consistently I’m not sure but it may be an option.

Marsters has been poor all season. It seems to me he is way too comfortable, like he owns his spot and so he lacks effort. His D is poor both in contact and in his reads. He often races up to compensate, comes up with nothing and creates a huge hole. I was hoping that taking away the kicking duties might help him to focus on his game, but so far nothing!

Put away the stupid skip in the air just before the line and hit it at pace. Needs to get into his head every inch towards the opposition line counts.

I think people are being a bit harsh. I don't think he has had his best season but consider he has been in FG 3 seasons and he is under his 3rd FG coach that can't make it easy on a young bloke who before he came into FG was a backrower so hasn't had the experience of growing up a centre.

Also this is his 2nd full year in FG so oppositions are also figuring him out a little more and know to look for the offload and for where he runs.

I also think his form isn't as bad as many are making out he is making 111m a match, has 34 offloads (1st for Tigers and 6th in the NRL), 6 tries (2nd best for us), 4 line breaks and 3 line break assists, 43 tackle breaks. He has also much reduced his error rate under Madge which has changed his game a bit from 1 per match down to 0.66 per match which has meant he is focusing more on quality play.

So is he playign a starring role no , could he be better yes but is he playing better then many are thinking - yes he is

I agree with Tiger Steve. I dont think dropping him would achieve anything.

This is why we pay the coach. The talent is there but he has fell into some very bad habits this season.

Hopefully Maguire can sort him out

Don't really care about stats but agree with the sentiment of this post...Marsters was OK last night..there really seems to be a need to criticise someone

Wests Tigers also had a plan to attack the Knights right edge which proved quire effective...not many opportunities for Marsters but he threatened with what little ball he did get broke a few tackles and a couple of nice offloads ..needs to work on setting up his outside man..had a few chances to do that but went himself..

Marsters, and you can put Nofo in this bracket too...are not smart footballers, and never will be.

they have all the talent in the world, but don't read the game. they are reactive players, and often react far too late.

one more thing about Marsters why he is just purely bog average - his defence.

Excuse my ignorance here (i come from a rugby union background), but i can NEVER understand why when defending (he is often the last man), all he does is just flail his arms around and trys to HUG the attacking player to stop him.

Like for gods sake, put your head down and tackle around the waist/legs, Drive them back with your own force - like a proper TACKLE. Benji does this too! I just dont understand this technique.

@boonboon These are the same excuses I hear for many of of juniors that come through.

Marsters has done nothing this year. He is a lazy player.

I think that the subject of this thread should read " Esan Masters Please don't run sideways".

And skip around, very annoying, and not real effective either

I think we need to understand that Esan is one of the few threats in our backline and is heavily marked. There is no pace outside so its up to him to beat his defender to create space. You could see the impact of Garner on Brooks' opportunities.

Yes I think he is a lock forward .... needs a go from coaching staff at some stage, to see how he performs. But not while we have some slim chance of making the finals.
I do think that his 3/4 days are coming to an end particularly with our recruitment focusing on strengthening that area with players with good footwork and speed.

@larry2005 Imagine how much of a threat Brooks, Garner and Esan would be with a really quick winger outside of them. Just puts the opposition defence in two minds.

@pawsandclaws1 with two decent starting props, liddle, matterson on an edge and running 6 (benji ok for now) and some pace on the wings we are a different beast. We would be ok if cleary hadn't spent all our cash on 3 crocks. Surely we have some pace somewhere?
