Ex players

No Fults, just no. Anyone who can't see that Cleary is the best available candidate needs their head read.

Like Geo I see what Fulton is getting at, it must be frustrating to make sacrifices for the club only for the front office to continually mismanage. I mean we as fans do it every year, give our hard earned to the club to watch them make an absolute dogs breakfast of what appears to be a promising year. Fulton was one of those club stalwarts that gave everything and left it on the field and for that I'll always have the highest respect for him.

That being said, he's got rocks in his head if he thinks his mate is the best man for the job. We've gone with two cut price coaches in the past, it hasn't paid off for a myriad of reasons so it's now time to shell out and get an experienced campaigner who has regularly taken sides to the finals.

Lol, That'll do me.

I love Fulton but he obviously has no idea whats going on. He starts with "because if it’s the same board that’s been there the whole time they are doing a pretty s*** job." The rest of it is irrelevant after that because he started off saying he didn't even know it's a new board!

That's the quote that stood out to me too, it makes absolutely no sense at all. Is it the boards fault or the players fault?
Poor Liam's had too many concussions.

I thought Fulton worked for the club post-retirement. When did that relationship end? Given his silly comments in this article, I assume he is no longer working for us.

Was never a smart guy, even before the head knocks.

Premiership-winning forward Liam Fulton calls on Wests Tigers board to walk
MATT LOGUE, The Daily Telegraph
March 21, 2017 5:59pm

PREMIERSHIP winning forward Liam Fulton has called on the Wests Tigers’ board to stand down, saying: “They are doing a s*** job”.

One of the club’s proudest players, he is sick of seeing the Tigers held back by poor management decisions.

His frustration reached a peak on Monday when Jason Taylor became the third Tigers coach to be sacked in the past five years.

“The board should go,” Fulton told The Daily Telegraph.

“They should just bring someone else in, because if it’s the same board that’s been there the whole time they are doing a pretty s*** job. The players are underperforming, which is the bottom line.
\
\
“But it does start at the top and the board. Look at the decisions they’ve made over the years. There is no stability in the club.”

Fulton says the board’s indecision and lack of leadership has been highlighted through the dismissals of former coaches Mick Potter and Tim Sheens.

“Mick did a great job, but he had no idea what was going on,” he said.

“I remember signing a new three-year deal and he didn’t even know about it.

“He wasn’t even involved in the contract negotiations and if I’m a head coach I would be negotiating with the players.

“Sheensy is another person who shouldn’t have gone. I think that was a big mistake by the board getting rid of him, because he definitely still had the players’ support.”

Fulton made significant sacrifices during his 11-season career.

This came to the fore in the late 2000s when he and fellow teammates took pay cuts to keep the team together.

Liam Fulton says former coach Mick Potter (pictured) was left in the dark at the club.
Fulton even left the Tigers for England at the end of 2008 to ensure the club was under the salary cap the following season.

“But when you love the club, that’s the things you do,” he said. “They used to call us in and say, ‘we’re over the cap, can you help us out’. It was pay cuts from 50,000 grand through to 80 and 100 grand.

“Robbie Farah, Bryce Gibbs, Benji Marshall and myself — we all took pay cuts to keep players there to try and win a comp.

“They were back-end contracts and you got the money a year later, but it was still a sacrifice and a hindrance.”

Fulton said the players were happy to take financial cuts, but it became increasingly difficult to swallow when the board kept letting them down with poor management.

“It’s a bit upsetting that we used to make those sacrifices for the club, then people behind the scenes aren’t even making sacrifices,” he said.

“They are just making stupid decisions.

“I ended up getting paid what I was owed and the club looked after me when I had my concussion, but it (the Tigers) is not the place it used to be.”

The Tigers find themselves in a power struggle with Isaac Moses — the manager of the club’s big four — James Tedesco, Luke Brooks, Mitch Moses and Aaron Woods.

Fulton said all the Tigers players also need to take ownership of their performances.

“I think it’s about mateship and they kind of gave in a bit on the weekend (against Canberra),” he said.

“Every single game you play you are putting your reputation on the line.

“I really like the players that are there, like Tedesco and these young blokes.

“It’s hard for them because they get bagged a bit, but they don’t have a forward pack to lead them and they have got to do it on their own.”

Former Penrith and Warriors coach Ivan Cleary is favoured to replace Taylor as head coach, but Fulton would like to see his ex-teammate Todd Payten get a shot.

“They’ve got to sign someone like Todd for five years and say, ‘right, you’ve got five years to turn the club around’,” he said.

“I know everyone is talking about Ivan, but I don’t think Todd would be out of line and I definitely think he’ll bring success to the club.”

Fulton may be retired, but he is still involved in the game as first grade coach of the Campbelltown City Kangaroos in Group 6\. He said his main motivation was to help groom young players to become future Wests Tigers stars.

“Only problem, it’s not really getting looked after,” he said.

“A lot of these young kids that are coming through are getting pouched by St George and everywhere.

“So if I can contribute just a little bit to try and help these young fellas, I’ll be contributing like in the good old days when I used to play for the Magpies.”

Our playing culture stinks…

I liked Fulton, he gave his all.

Bur yeah, lets give Payten the job for 5 years (probably so he cam employ you)

No - lets not.

I agreed with most up until 5 year Peyton thing.
Makes me shudder.

May as well just sign coaches to one year deals. They don't see out longer ones at the Tigers.

That's what irks me,give TP a five year deal, lets keep the boys club alive and well…TIME FOR A NEW DIRECTION FULTS.... a positive one,not saying Payten would be good or bad, just not another ex player or friend....Cleary will deliver if given the chance...as always, will he get the chance...

Back in school, didn't they always tell you when voting for school captain or whatever, to vote for the best option, not just your friends? Well, we all just voted for our friends until the staff rigged it and put the best "school face" in (even if that kid was some total dork). Unfortunately no one seems to be, or know, who's in control here, so I'll nominate my buddy Tom to be the coach of Wests Tigers for X years - not even sure of his surname actually, but get 'im in there!

Geez, poor Liam doesn't seem to know one board from another. It was this board that approved him holding a job in the club after he was ruled out of football. I know he had a lot of concussions but…......

Well someone on the forum wanted some ex 'legends' to make some comments apart from the old Balmain people and Fulton did. Good on him for speaking out. Some pretty fair comments imo.

Fults is just as frustrated as the rest of us.
You cant deny the level of support for Payten from those that know him. You would like to think it is motivated by a belief that he could do a good job rather than it being a case of job for the boys. My belief is that almost all appointments in NRL clubs are pretty much based on who you know rather than what you know anyway.
I remember Sheens always rated him as having a great footy brain. Maybe for now - just not the right time.

How many other clubs would be pushing for or even looking at a coach with no first grade experience?
Why should we be the club that has such low standards.

and not one of those players who took a payment deferral, gave us half the value for the money dished out their final years.

you were all well compensated.

but,he is correct about the disconnect between management and the coaching staff.

this is pretty much the history of the wests tigers club.

Watching benny on nrl 360 it is all due to the fact Balmain have no influence. His relos (Moses x2) are smart people that should influence the club. He can probably see $$ in relocating the club to Perth with his mining mate Sage.
Sironen slagging off JT and the club in tomorrow's paper. If he is talking about expectations and entitlement, it is a shame he did not install the same in his son.
Quality blokes both these men, they should be banned from the club

It was babbling Benny at his best grinding his axe just like Sirro unfortunately is. And when he offered Wayne Pearce as our CEO, I nearly threw up in my mouth.

Move on people, nothing to see here!

I agree Telltails. Let Todd get an NRL gig somewhere else first. I'd rather not see him back here until the players he has ties with have moved on, or in the case of the young guys, play several more years NRL without him as coach.
