TODD PAYTEN NAMES HIS BEST FULL-BACK AND WINGERS

Wests Tigers Prop Todd Payten today names the best ever full-back and wingers he has played with in his outstanding career from 1996 to 2011.

Exclusive to weststigers.com.au, Payten has named a 17-man team in positional order after reflecting on the players he played alongside at Canberra, Sydney Roosters and Wests Tigers.

It is all part of the countdown to Todd Payten’s last home game for Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Sports Stadium this Monday night.

Tomorrow, Payten names the best centres he played with.

FULL-BACK: Brett Hodgson

“I couldn’t go past the little fella. I think for his size and weight what he achieved in his career is simply outstanding. He would get hammered at training. He should’ve been a bit bigger as he had the worst diet I have seen! A tough customer who played above his weight and was a pure and natural footballer. Great captain who let his actions on the paddock do his talking.

“Brett also had this terrific ability to get nearly everything for free. Immediately after the 2005 Grand Final win, there was a sign at Campbelltown McDonalds drive thru that Brett Hodgson eats for free! They had to take it down after 4 days.

“Hodgo nudged out Brett Mullins. Mullos was the most naturally gifted footballer I have seen in my career while Anthony Minichiello, who I once shared a house with, is full of energy and his personality was infectious.”

Noa Nadruka

“Noa was electrifying. I was only a kid when I played with Noa but I looked up to him. To me he looked so big and fast. During sprint testing one pre- season over 100m, he blew everyone away including the AIS staff when he got quicker over each section of the 100m. Only Olympic sprinters are supposed to do that.

“Another funny memory of ‘Bulla’ was on a pre-season camp in Jindabyne. We had to cycle 40km on mountain bikes to camp. He wasn’t familiar with bikes and gears, so he would pick the bike up, throw it on his shoulder and walk to the crest of each hill and jump aboard for the way down. It took him an hour and a half longer than everyone else.”

Pat Richards

“I can categorically say that without Patty playing in the 2005 grand final, we wouldn’t have won. His effort not only to get on the park but also to read the play, catch the ball one handed and then palm off a flying Rod Jenson to score was incredible. Just as incredible if not more so than the pass he received from Benji.

“Pat was a cracking bloke and the best all round sportsman I have seen in my time. He knew it and let you know about it!! Patty left a big hole in the club when he went overseas. His kicking and catching was highly under-rated.

"These two beat guys like Kenny Nagas, Les Vainakolo, and Taniela Tuiaki. I loved watching Kenny play as a kid and it was a shame to see his knees hold him back in coming years. Les was a powerhouse and came into grade at the same time I did. Taniela was the same. There was no better sight than as a forward turning around after a kick and seeing him charge into petrified chasers. He was just finding his peak before disaster hit him and the Tigers.”

Im bit shocked that Pat Richards got a go, glad hodgo was selected, all ready some really good players who have missed out. Looks like he is not going to pick players out of position, if he was he would have picked either mini or mullins on a wing you'd think.

I work at Rosie Maccas now, looks like I started there a few years too late! haha

I must say I forgot about Richards, but I guess the only full year he played for us was 05, I remember him being injured for most of 04.
3 very good choices though, I think Noa is another great player from the 90s who doesnt get spoken about much now.

I remember reading somewhere that Pat Richards was playing first grade cricket and was on the verge of a state call up when he made the decision to continue with league.

pat richards has always been a gun footballer. in 1999 playing sg ball for parra he played 9 matches for 12 tries and 49 goals - 146 points. THAT try in the 2005 g/f is legendary and that fend was an absolute classic. his 60m ' on the fly ' dropouts were pretty handy as well.

Yeah you may be a little tiger heavy there Goose…Mini and Mullins were greater fullbacks then Hodgo...you have also left Clyde and Kennedy out. Also think Wind ding will get the utility spot.

I cheated with the fullbacks, figured they all should be there, **and hodgo was the only one of the 3 not to play to play wing** :slight_smile:

Kennedy and Clyde have to come in at the expense of Lafrencci and Heino, god knows who ends up on the bench, maybe fittler and fletcher…..

as I said, great team, so many good players will miss out, I reckon Im prob forgetting a few as well

Hodgson played wing with Western Suburbs, he played mostly on the wing until Andrew Leeds gave the game away, he played 3 games at fullback when Leeds was unavailable during 1998 and also played 8 games at halfback in 98 and another one in round 12, 1999.

Hodgo became the Magpies permanent fullback from round 4 1999, all up Hodgo played 18 games on the wing, 18 at fullback, 9 at halfback, 1 at five-eighth and 2 from the bench for the Magpies.
