Final Thoughts

A lot of players react in the same way as Benji has without anywhere near the same amount of publicity. Beau Ryan for one could feel the threat to his position from the up and coming Wests Tigers wingers and went to Cronulla when he could not get the security he needed after his contract was not upgraded by Wests Tigers. Benji could feel a similar threat from the up and coming Wests Tigers halves.

Waratahs have said they been talking to benjis manager for some years now

Exactly. Both Tauber, and the Waratahs CEO both confirmed these chats have been going on and off for the last 3 years. Hell i even had a bloke tell me 3 or 4 months ago he had been told Marshall was going to the Tahs. ( i didn't believe him).
All that says to me is Benji has not been fully committed at any stage in the last few years to seeing out his contract. It's like he has always had this "thing" going so if he didn't like something he could take his bat and ball and go home.
I'm sad to see him go, it is the end of an era, but i also know it's the right thing.Best for him and us. Good luck with the future Benji whether it's in the NRL or Rugby.

Oh and one last thing, he might want to shut that old goat up he calls a manager, because the more he opens his mouth, the more shady he makes Benji Inc look.

I think that this might be the whole issue. The only thing I don't get is that Benji might end up losing money over this whole venture.

Best thing Potter ever did was bench Marshall. Looks like he threw his toys out of the pram when it happened.

Finally some accountability for poor performances. What a breath of fresh air.

Marshall was a great player for a long time for us and I'll never forget everything he did for the club, all the good moments he gave us. But his departure is for the best, for both the club and himself.

Talk the talk is cheap, didn't bother to finish his current contract and proof he is worth an extension ,cause deep down he knows his best days On the field are long gone. Young kids are our future

Hindsight has shown it to be the "line in the sand" moment. Things had to change at Wests Tigers. For all the talent we've had we've always kept those same inconsistencies. Didn't matter who was in the squad. The culture was as much the issue as anything else.

I think in all honesty,

Benjis leaving rugby league decision is probably based on more than most people realise:

-chances are that the nz team For the World Cup will consist of Shaun Johnson and Kieran foran, both who are in better form then benji currently.
-benji has had the nz captaincy taken away from him
-benji has pressure in the coming years to hold his position in the team, with the likes of sirro/brooks/Moses continually on the rise.
- next year Richards will be kicking, not benji.

Whilst these aren't all large issues I'm sure that has an impact on his decision, after all, how do you want to go out?

On top of your game? Or lose nz captaincy, not make the side, eventually be pushed out of your side, due to mor e consistent players coming through?

To me its a no brainier, and prob had a bearing on the decision he made.

So him saying he was disappointed the handshake deal didnt come to fruition - that he didnt get another four years in the game was all a ruse to hide the above?

OK.

I think it's a long list of reasons, but nothing is as straight froward as we see. If he stayed and played well, he would have been resigned for further years!

I believe there is more than meets the eye in this story, an this is a great excuse to leave now on his own terms!

I partially disagree. I think the club will be better off. I think he is really making a massive mistake personally.

My final thought is it shows just how amateurish our club really is when it comes to handling the big issues. We saw the board sign Sheens to a three year contract and sack him after one year. We saw the previous CEO pledge an upgrade to Benjis contract. This pledge was undone by a new administration which has ultimately led to Benji leaving the Club in bitter circumstances. One of our favourite sons and main draw card putting backsides on seats and bringing sponsors to the club ending like this. Then we have CEO's after Steve Noyce like Longmuir and Humphreys who have been unceremoniously sacked by the board.

So what confidence can prospective players in the future have to come and sign on and play for Wests Tigers given the debacle of the last few years ? Are future sponsors really interested in a club that goes about its business like this ? According to Mayer, everything is bright and rosy and heading in the right direction. I hope for his sake he is right otherwise he will go the same way as Longmuir and Humphreys assuming he gets the job.

There is no doubt in my mind we have an incompetent, bitter and divided board who unfortunately are not accountable to the Wests Tigers membership …. Only to themselves. While ever this dysfunctional structure at the top level continues, we can probably expect more of the same in the years to come. There was talk earlier in the year of an NRL assisted overhaul .... My hope is it results in a board with the proper mix of skill sets to see the Club flourish with a clear strategy and plan for the future and knows how to deal with professional people in a professional way.

well here are my final thoughts- heard, read, listened and watched every crap from almost everyone who's commented here and in the media.

benji wants to do what's best for his family- moneywise, job security wise watever it is. he had 2 years contract left ON PAPER- chose to ask for a release instead.

that is THE END. what anyone says from here on whether it be his manager, club or himself will all be forgotten.

there is no reason to blame the club whatsoever apart from the idiot who "shook" his hand on the deal and for benji who celebrated a handshake without signing anything. no matter what the middle man (tauber) did/say- between the club and benji, it's benji's fault 100%.

as chris said, he has come out of it looking like a sook, an unprofessional athlete and not to mention "dumb" to celebrate a deal which had never been signed on. as for his "handshake" agreement, i dont think benji would've kept his end of the bargain by actually improving and cutting out the silly errors in his game.

as for those blaming the club, what would you rather the club do? give him a 4 year extension on this form? no way.

no matter how much anyone swears at him, which every money paying fan has the right to do- everyone here wishes him luck in whatever he does. said this before somewhere- he'll be remembered but not missed.

i didn't really care if Benji went or not, its probably for the best for him and the club it didn't look like his form was going to turn good, but the thing is yes brooks and Moses are our future but everyone has got to remember that they are still young and, don't expect them to win the tigers every game they will be learning the ropes and forming combos with the team all next year so be prepared for another lean year next year near the bottom of the table maybe after they have been in first grade 2-3 years will we see what awesome players they will be
