Finals - No difference between 4th and 5th?

Warriors got eliminated last year when they lost to the titans. They finished 5th, of course the roosters who came sixth beat us and the raiders who came seventh beat the panthers. The titans who came fourth got the week off.

I would rather finish fourth.

Well Costaki ponder these games first week of semis
Melbourne v Souths
Manly v Warriors
Brisbane v Saints
Tigers v Cowboys
I'd give the Warriors and the saints at least a 50-50 shot and if Souths put it all together on the day they could trouble Melbourne (not saying they would win though)

Im really pumped about this finals series…there are some awesome matchups coming.

That loss we had to the Roosters last year was a superb game of football...possibly the best game I've ever been to even though we lost. Ellis played the game of his life and should have scored multiple tries. Benji and Carney both had blinders...Ayshford got out of his hospital bed and ran the length of the field...the drama of our injuries late in the game...Dwyers hit of the century...our stuff up at the scrum base followed by Anastas field goal which was the best pressure play I've ever seen...the drama of extra time... Lote and SKD in a footrace after 100 minutes. That game had everything.

I think we could get a couple like that this year....can not wait.

Another negative with the AFL system is that if either team 1 or 2 lose in the first week of the finals then they cannot meet in the grand final. If they meet at all, it will be in the week before the grand final - as happened last year.

And, yet another negative is that the loser of the 1x4 and 2x3 matches in week 1 are rewarded with home finals in week 2

I much prefer the AFL system.

I see the reward of the home game in round 2 is for finishing higher on the ladder, it places greater emphasis on the season proper.

With the Mcintyre system, it is possible to run 6th, if all games go to the lower place team, get a week off, win 1 more game an go to the GF.

Stryker…..although that game was a blinder, Robbie and Heighno are not the only people who have nightmares about that scrum. I can't help thinking the wear on the team from that game cost us a place in the grand final.
So, therefore, IT WAS A SHOCKER OF A GAME!!!!!!! :brick: :brick: :bawling

ALL sport is played in the mind. Massive difference. The difference between belief and doubt, winning and losing, this year and next year.

They still would have been eliminated if they finished 4th. 4th and 8th would have been the lowest ranked losers.

There's no difference whatsoever between 4th and 5th when those teams play on neutral turf. Either loser falls into the same ranking regardless.

5th has been bundled out first week and yet NQ when we put 50 on them were not and still made the gf.

The McIntyre is a ridiculous system.

Main difference between 4th and fifth is that as far as I'm aware a top 4 team has never been eliminated in week one (although it's technically possible) where as the fifth placed team has been eliminated a number of times…

But that's nothing to do with the system is it? If you're fourth and lose you can only afford one of 1-3 to lose as well. If you're fifth and lose you can still only afford to have one of 1-3 lose (4 has already won).

The way the ladder is shaping up this season throws up some odd possibilities for us:
- In order for us to come 4th we realistically need to win both our remaining games and we need the Warriors to lose at least one of theirs. The most likely loss they have is this weekend against the Dragons, which means there's a decent possibility that if we get 4th the Dragons will get 5th. In other words, our 'home' final will really be a neutral venue one.
- If we win this weekend and the Dragons beat the warriors, we'll be desperate for the Cowboys to win in Auckland in the final round - that's likely to be the difference between Dragons at the SFS and Cowboys at the SFS in the first final. I know who I'd rather play.
- We've got next to no chance of playing the Warriors at home. It would have to involve situations like the Dragons beating the Warriors then losing to Penrith, or the Cowboys losing at home to Cronulla then beating the Warriors in NZ.
- We'd probably rather finish 7th (Manly at Homebush) than 6th (Brisbane at Suncorp). That's even more true if Souths get 8th and the Dragons 7th - I'd argue there's a fair chance one of those could win in week one thus dumping us out if we lose in Brisbane.

That's a positive. If you finish first or second, and lose first week, you should still get a home final in the next round IMO.

True, but if you finish 4th and lose in the first week why should you get a home final in the second week against the winner of 5 or 8\. That is, 5th plays wins and has to play away from home

mcintyre system sucks with too many flaws which can reward mediocrity in the first round of playoff matches. when the afl used this system i seem to recall carlton, i think, being flogged by almost a hundred yet then doing a cowboys to get to the g/f. it was after that the afl flicked the mcintyre system and now use a much more sensible system that rewards the top 4 teams over the whole season and automatically puts the bottom half of the finals teams in straight out sudden death matches

The AFL got rid of the Mackintyre system because in their game teams 7 & 8 never beat teams 1 & 2\. It was a formality which made the system boring.

In our game, every year team 7 or 8 wins, meaning that there is always a stack of nervous Nellies in the first week. It always throws up the great unknown!

Home City advantage.

Ps I like the unpredictabiliity of the current system.

Best thing is to just keep winning…

The NRL can't have the AFL draw because quite simply, the NRL draw is not fair.

Everyone does not play each other twice (same as AFL) and different teams are impacted by representative fixtures (key difference). The NRL system allows a club with a heavy representation in rep football to finish 5th or 6th and have a second chance if they lose their first finals match.

haha yeah no doubt it was a shocking result for us….but as a spectacle it was near perfect.

The way that teams are playing at the moment, this finals series will be even better.

If wests tigers beat cronulla and warriors beat cowboys and penriff beat dragons then we will be 4th. We would be most likely play warriors at sfs after tonites result
