Finals week 1, 2025 discussion

The Broncos are the juggernaut team of the competition did anyone seriously think the NRL had the balls to rub out their star fullback from the finals, ruining their chances he makes a huge difference.

The whinging coming out of Queensland would be next level.

Hudson Young generally deserves the bin for being an all-round pillock. I don't personally think he deserved the bin for getting in Walsh's face, but I'm not entirely against it.

Personally I think this is justification again for the 5-minute sin bin, where those medium offences can get a medium penalty. You send Young for 5 for being a pillock and Walsh for 10 for the head-butt. Nobody gets off scot-free.
A lot could be done in this area. Possibly a system of cards where you have personal and team warnings, 5 min bins, 10 min bins and send offs.

The cards officalise everything rather than it being vague.

It might be too much officialdom though, so I'm undecided on whether it's good to go down that path, but a 5 min bin should definitely be introduced. On the other hand, would it encourage more sin bins? Not sure if I even really want that in the game.

I totally agree with you about goading but Klein refereed that incident different to how it’s been refereed ever. I hate goading but you can’t do a 180 degree turn in officiating without any warning. It was typical Klein partisanship.
I respect your opinion but can you point out any previous incident in our game where the goader was the one penalised and binned. I can’t.
In most occasions when there is a striking charge the person instigating it is also binned, though typically the penalty goes to the team of the player that was struck. Would need to look in to it to list any actual times.

Most recent incident I can remember however was about 3 weeks ago. Meaney was penalised for goading Burton after a knock on. There was no striking or binning on this occasion.

I'm happy with it as long as it's consistent. The precedent is set. Reading between the lines seems the first binning (for goading), won't happen unless there is a 2nd binning (for striking). Smart operators might be able to use this to their advantage.

Madge certainly loved the W, don't think I've ever seen a coach more fired up with the victory vibes.
I recall a similar reaction when we won our first game of his wooden spoon year. It was golden point and Hastings kicked a field goal. There was another golden point game against Souths where it looked like Tom Burgess knocked the ball on, but he actually scored the try. Brooks ran away and scored, but we lost. Madge's celebration reaction followed by his devastation 3 minutes later was pretty funny.

I think the reason Young was penalised yesterday was because Walsh didn't do the knock on and was some metres from the play. Had Young have gone to Shibasaki (who I think knocked it on) and goaded him I doubt anything would have happened. Whether we agree with it or not I can see why Klein penalised Young, because he essentially just picked someone out of a team and started goading them, without that there was no other carry on.

Madge has done well with his first year with the donkeys but it's what happens in the following years when in the past with his relentless hard training the gloss wears off.

His 1st year with us we finished 9th but it was all downhill from there, same at south's after the premiership win, the players started to complain that they were leaving it all on the training paddock, and were too sore on game day.

Has the old dog learned from the past well I haven't got crystal balls, we will have to wait and see hey.
I don’t buy the argument that he’s only good the first year. At Souths he won the comp in his 3rd year and most coaches don’t achieve sustained success outside of Cleary and Bellamy.

We got worse after his first year but I believe that was more to do with the back ended contracts of Mbye, Packer etc.

I found a similar incident to prettyboy's one yesterday in the archives

I had completely forgot about it, probably because it didn't happen in a semi final 😀

Still think Walsh should have been sent off but it seems that tripping and headbutts these day are ok and only worthy of a fine.

Yeah. It certainly isn't consistent and as you say the first never happens without the second.

The NRL and match officials have only themselves to blame for the Walsh / Hudson incident yesterday. For the past few years they have done nothing about the taunting that has become an increasing part of the game. Players patting opposition players on the back derisively after they knock on or miss a tackle. It happens half a dozen times a game in most games and is its just unsporting. It's part of the increasing Americanisation of our game which includes things like taunting and ridiculous try celebrations.
Taunting should be eliminated from the game by penalising it into oblivion.
Having said that and based on the way the game has been refereed in relation to taunting, Hudson's binning should not have happened.
Mulitalo the greatest culprit - he loves to trash talk.

Personally, I don’t mind the taunting. I think it adds some flavour and character to the game and a great example was during the Ali era. He was a master at it and put world heavyweight boxing on centre stage.
What is distasteful and increasingly sneaking into the game is the goading of opposition to commit to a breach of the rules. It’s poor sportsmanship.

Will you buy in if it all turns to crap next year with the dream roster he possesses.
