Fixed draw

As we come to the end of the league's first season under a fixed draw, Im interested to know, who has taken advantage of this fixed schedule? Ie who has planned to go to a game more than 6 weeks ahead of the game, which they otherwise wouldn't have been able to plan in prior seasons?

I ask because I suspect there are more people who missed out on quality games of footy being played on free to air that otherwise would've been on in previous years. It's my opinion therefore that the rolling schedule is better than what we had this year.

So I'm interested to hear other people's thoughts? I suspect the Sydney siders will agree with me, and the out of towners will prefer the fixed draw

Pretty sure this was the first season in while we played the broncos twice. It'll be interesting to see if that continues. We don't really have much a rivalry with them… The games are usually duds

Im usually one to travel to interstate games. In 2009 and 2012 I made it to every Wests Tigers game and this year made my 11th trip to QLD. But this year, as my first year out of uni, and facing the reality of a full time job, I had to miss the two games in Melbourne and Brisbane as they were both unfortunately scheduled on a Monday night. Had they been on weekends I would have been there.

Do I think the fixed draw worked for the NRL? Not really… Not only were crowd numbers down but so were TV audiences. I usually look forward to a relaxing Friday night at home watching a good game of footy, but I can honestly say the attraction of watching two teams in the bottom half of the comp midway through Origin period was nothing short of boring.

Did the NRL commit to a timeframe for the fixed draw? Is it staying beyond next season? I don't mind how they did it last year, ie first six weeks announced, then each week release another two weeks. By round 4 or 5 you already knew round 14 or 15\. The way airlines are at the moment six weeks out is plenty of time to snare a cheapy fare to Melbourne, Brisbane or the Gold Coast.

They seem to be either hits or misses

Been a few close shave wins and losses over the last few years or Brisbane blow out wins

Answering the question posed though , to much can go wrong with fixed draws injuries etc and we can have Friday night games where 15th and 16th play

Maybe shorten it to 10 week blocks ,and you might possibly be able to stop the above issue to a degree

I'm impressed Alex that you're able to make it to so many games! As far as I know I don't believe the NRL has committed to a scheduled draw for any length of period. The stumbling block to changing it back though would be whether the commission are able to put their hand up and admit that the fixed draw was mistake. I can't see them doing this to be honest, but hopefully Dave smith can see the light
