Seeing this is the preseason and we can discuss many different topics,I thought I would raise a question that has me doubting some things that we were taught at school...For some people the earth is flat,I was taught we are on a globe, everywhere I went in school there was a globe of the world as we were taught..
This type of thing has me questioning a lot of the science we were taught, this brings me to the question I would like some people to think about..
If the moon is 400,000 km from earth, how come we can see it clearly as if it is just overhead and why sometimes we see clouds infront and at the back of the moon ?
I cant see a huge mountain 50 km away so why can I see an object 400,000 km away...it must be absolutely massive,it shouldnt even be a speck at that distance...
Feel free to inject some good sensible answers and civil conversation...cheers people...👍

I have a problem with the free thinker comment. Free thinking isn't about being easily played and not believing in science, facts and rational thought.

We can see the moon because of the sun. The sun hits the moon and we see the sun's light on it.

The sun is pretty powerful. The moon is pretty big.

You shouldnt have a problem with free thinking Earl...what I was alluding to was we were TAUGHT at school about the solar system and Earth is a globe,I feel somethings are a bit different, for example there is a lot of discussion on different sites about the flat earth theory,I never entertained the thought of Earth being flat so I naturally went with what I was taught..So if I start thinking differently and researching isnt this free thinking and analysing what the differing arguments are to find a solution?

A friend of mine was reasonably good friends with a Buddhist monk who had left Tibet. He had a Masters in something and was well-educated - still believed the world was flat and that science lied about a number of things.
Kind of like some believing Woods will be a good pick up.

Are you saying that you believe the Earth is flat?

Do you mean if you have a direct line of sight? Stuff will be in the way between you and the mountain to see it. If you mean looking towards the mountain with nothing between you and the mountain you still wont see it as its evidence that the Earth has a curve and its no longer in sight as it slightly bends around the curve from where you are standing. Although I'm not sure if 50km would be enough distance for it to be totally out of sight. The reason you can see the moon that far away is its a direct line of sight between you and the moon, point to point. The larger the moon appears the closer our orbits. The distance of 400K doesn't matter as the moon is much larger than a mountain on the Earth and it appears as a mere fraction, about the size of a 10cent piece against the entire back drop of space you see when you look up at night. Its not that surprising to see the moon.

No mate,Im saying that I was taught that our Earth is a globe and still believe it as such, however, the flat earth theory keeps popping up and researching it and trying to understand that theory brings some things into question...Im not here to get an argument going about it,Im interested in other peoples thoughts and input into a logical question I asked about the moon..refer to opening post....

Ask a Flat Earther to produce a model. They cant and wont. It fails immediately as the burden of proof is upon them to claim a positive against an established fact. All they do is try to poke holes in the Globe model, tells you everything you need to know about the FE position.

Its not a theory, its a hypothesis.

Evolution and gravity are theories. (proven fact)

The reason that you can't see that mountain is actually proof that earth is a sphere.

I have a better question

53 years ago it took Man 76 hours ( 3 days and 4 hours for you @hobbo1 ) to travel 384 399 kms to land on the Moon

53 years later it is going to take 7 to 10 working days to get my new airconditoner from Sydney to Gladstone .....and I'm not asking Neil Armstrong to personally deliver it and think of some catchy delivery slogan either

All infrastructure and logic breaks down once it crosses the border into QLD
