Footy Urban Legends

Thought id start a thread about urban myths. Wanted people to list theres

1\. This one irks me for no reason whatsoever. But I always here how Cooper Cronk and DCE were diamonds in the rough that were picked from obscurity to defy the odds and succeed in the NRL. This is so not true. Cooper Cronk was the best rugby player in the country, signed to the storm for huge dollars, went virtually straight to first grade won Dally M half in his second full year, played for Aus in his 3rd. He was always a star. DCE was a very dominate under age player, although it is true the broncos didn't pick him, and went with Hunt, they would have loved to pick both, but it was the first or second year of the anti-stock piling rules. He ended up at Manly was the best player in NYC, Had a year in QLD cup where he won the comp, was about the best player before going on to first grade. They were both always awesome and had a typical run to first grade like any other star kid. Such a myth
2\. I heard this about a million times, from heaps of blokes, Back in [insert country town] there is a bloke as good as [insert current star in same position] that doesnt want to come to town, Im sure there is a few out there that probably could kill it in the NRL given a chance.
3\. For every player that makes it, locals from that age group always say there was a kid better in that comp

loads more….urban legends are the stuff that makes pub footy talk great!

No 3 It all comes down to hard work and commitment

If anyone would of told me Willie Carne as 16-17 year old would of played for Qld or Australia as a winger I would of offered them odds of 100 000 - 1

Ditto Beau Scott - I have a Brother in Law and his best mate who grew up and played with him in Group 6.

The Brother in Law reckons Beau Scott was one of the hardest working players he ever knew. He told me he was never the smartest, or even the most naturally talented player - He just worked damn hard - the old first one to turn up, last one to leave cliche.

The mate of the Brother in Law isn't quite as forgiving, and reckons Beau Scott was just a kiss ass, who got favourable treatment, and knew the right people.

Spot the bloke who got put on his ass by Beau Scott in a Group 6 grand final. :roll

I don't know if you can say the same about Beau , but Willie was /is one of the nicest blokes you will ever meet and hearing the stories of his memory loss due to bad hits he took is extremely saddening 😢

A certain gutless Blues second rower by the name Geyer has a lot to answer for that

Geyer acts so tough , pity he never mentions how fearful of Andrew Gee he is

Ask him if you ever meet him what happened in a Qld v NSW Under 18's game back in either 87 or 88 in regards to Gee

He told me NSW won..and Gee is a pussy

I remember Geyer single handedly taking on the whole QLD side in one Origin(includin that no hoper Gee).

Didnt look too scared that day!

The game before the bye is a "4 point game". And when fans think the team will jump other teams because they have a bye in hand. If those other teams win the week you have the bye, then nothing has been achieved.

I hate the 4 point game cliche…..it is a 2 point game, you get the second 2 points regardless!

And everyone else gets those same 2 points at some point down the track as well.

We won the series beforehand in 1986 , first open Qld schoolboy side to defeat NSW and it got ugly in the Under 18

Brawl breaks out and Gee and Geyer are about get stuck into it

Gee goes to grab Geyer by the collar and accidently grabs his ear and Geyer starts screaming like a girl as Gee starts whaling on him Geyer has half his ear missing

And if you don't believe me ask Steve Edmed ex Balmain boy , he was there

If you went through club games , count how many games that Gee plays , Geyer missed

There's been a few

Geyer fearful of that plodder Gee….

Omigod u are dead set DELUDED beyond belief.

Climb out of your castle and swim a few laps of the moat

I was sitting about 40 metres away

Watto knows Gee Gee , get him to confirm it

Ask your Balmain brother Edmed about it

I once heard Geyer got punked out by Gus.

Yep

One of Gus 's greatest quotes was to Mark Geyer when he dropped him from the Origin team for showing up late

Geyer offered to step outside and Gus said " Don't let fear get in your way MG "

MG stormed off

Love that quote , love it

Not bringing West v Balmain in this debate, but Scotty Gale was one of the best halfbacks going around at the time…..

Many young guys loved to get his autograph after games and built their own games around his....

He passed away a few years ago and didn't get the accolades he deserved...one of the best Balmain had in their playing group...

Very much like Benji but many years prior, not as exciting but did his work thoroughly....

Gale had an enornous 85 but could never regain thay form again. In 85 hw scored plenty of chip chase tries….one where he did a double one v norths in the semi. Very very fast and had a neat step too. Shame he couldn't keep it up bit thrilling to watch in full flight.

It's Ok…TT he debut for Wests in 83....along with Brett, Mick Neil, Gary Jack, Mick Luibinskas. Warren Boland. Elery Hanley to name a few ...there have been many players to represent both our foundation Clubs...

I new the Gale's and it was very sad indeed when Scott succumbed to Motor Neuron Disease...Great player

Another bloke who had the world at his feet and spent some time at Wests was Ewan McGrady

You win a Rothman's and literally disappear off the map just as quick

He reminds me so much of Ben Barba

Thanks GEO,that's what I meant about not bringing the WvT into it,there was some awesome footballers from both the foundation clubs and that is why we have such a great team now,I had a soft spot for Scott because I had beers at the old leagues club one night after a Panasonic cup game (that's how long it's been )and Scott made me feel welcome and introduced me to Blocker and a couple of the others, really nice person,an absolute tradgedy going so young…..
