I love F1 and cant stand Hamilton. George Russell has just proved the emperor has no clothes.

I agree huge F1 fan here too can't stand Hamilton he's been way over the top with his BLM stuff and imposing his will onto others.

But yes agree if Russell can step straight into his car and pop it on the front row when he doesnt even properly fit the car that says a lot.

Hamilton is a good driver no doubt but he's had the best car for god knows how long, he only wants average drivers beside him ie Bottas he couldnt handle anyone like Max Ricciardo or even a Perez in the same car. Look at the hissy fits he had when Rosberg was his partner.

I don’t mind Hamilton , he seems like a decent bloke . He’s just so much better than many other drivers . It’s funny Dan , is widely considered one of the only ones in the field who have the skills to rival Hamilton . He just doesn’t haven the politics of other drivers , like Carlos Sainz, and Verstappen , which means he hasn’t ever had the full backing , or car , to challenge him . Even at red bull , verstappen and himself would split the results , until his last season, where the team clearly said catch you later to him , and gave him a dud car , and race plan.
He will go down as this generations Alonso , especially if he does somehow manage a title . The most , talented of his generation . But always in a dud car .

Disagree. IMO Danny Ric, Sainz, Verstappen are all the equal of Hamilton. I would go as far to say that there are probably 6 or 7 drivers who in Hamiltons car, win the championship.

I also dont think its because Ricciardo is not good at politics, it is because he is a threat and the top two teams (prior to this year) had established world champions int he car 1 seat.

He was the number 1 at Red bull before verstappen came along . And verstappen had the royal passage to number 1 , even though it’s debatable whether he was ready for that . That’s the type of stuff I’m talking about . Sainz was also another who was very heavy through his dad behind the scenes . F1 seems very political to me . I know back in the day , many of the actual best drivers never got a run , because they couldn’t drum up the funds for a drive .

F1 is massively political, my point was that its not because Ricciardo is bad at the political game.

Verstappen is very good, IMO on a par with Ricciardo but MUCH younger and has the backing of his Dad. Kinda makes sense for RB to put their eggs in that basket. Sainz does have the cred of his Dad but IMO he is the real deal.

Ricciardo will not get a drive in the tops teams until one of the big guys retires. Ricciardo will only get a car 1seat and IMO Ferrari are going to struggle for a few years. IMO the World Champion drives a Mercedes for the forseeable future. Daniel may be a chance when Hamilton has had enough of winning.

My prediction is Mclaren take another step with him instead of Sainz .

I hope you are right. When he signed I thought it was a wise move but ever since, Renault has been more competitive. Would love to see them challenge RB.

He’s been competitive. Ocon shows what a piece of crap that car is.

Have been following and watching F1 on FTA TV here prior to having to crawl behind the Murdoch pay wall from back when Alan Jones became competitive in the Williams and together with Frank they took the team to their first championship, so 4 decades now. Jones wasn't a great driver, but he got there through determination and was hard to pass. Not totally ruthless or even downright dangerous as say Schumacher could be, but he didn't make it easy.

Probably only missed a handful of races since Webber jumped into the Minardi, having watched mainly in peace at home, with a few seasons worth at hotels or bars on my travels in various time zones and countries. A memorable one was one of the opening races of 2012 which saw 6 or 7 different winners of each race start the season. I shared a great experience in a quiet bar with several people including a Venezuelan couple when their countryman Pastor MacDonald, also in a Williams and probably their only win in a long time time now, kept my favourite in Alonso (though I probably supported Webber in a battle between the pair) at bay to win the Spanish GP.

Agree. He won't be driving with that pusbox Renault unit.

Hell he could probably push that piece of crap round the track faster

Pretty good race this morning, chaos on lap 1 and Mercedes pit crew had an absolute shocker, somehow finding a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Congrats to Perez who finally chalked up a win. A bit disappointing for Ricciardo who finished 5th but he and Carlos were just continually in the wrong place at the wrong time when it came to safety cars.

1 race to go...

Yep . His team made some poor decisions re. Strategy. They rolled the dice with Ocon , and it paid off . A better team strategy , and that race should have been Sainz vs Riccardo . But anyways good race .

That team doesn't make those mistakes. No one will convince me otherwise, but that result was contrived to ensure that they were not upstaged by George Russell winning in Hamiltons car.

Conveniently a Mercedes powered car still wins. The constructors chamionship is already won. Bottas position as second in the championship is safe because Verstappen, the nearest threat had already crashed out.

Its the easy way out - "Oh, we made a damn mistake"

I was screaming at the screen (somewhat restrained at that ungodly hour) to pit RIC as soon as the safety car notice came on the first lap. Get those red softs off with little loss in track position and a rolling restart with another couple of laps to warm up the harder compound as DRS is not enabled for a couple of laps after it.

Then they mucked up the first stop by calling him in too late and I will have to check, but I think they had a set of hards ready and then swapped them as they would have been cooling out of their blankets, for a set of mediums as Daniel had to do another lap, then coming out to be stuck behind KVY. Hards would have probably provided much greater opportunity, so to then have him follow SAI in for the second stop after the VSC had finished was a similarly poor move and consigned him to sit behind for the remainder.

I thought the same at first but I sincerely doubt that’s the case as he’s been earmarked by Mercedes as next in line. They genuinely want him to succeed and I think tonight they saw what the future holds.

And that's exactly why they did what they did. We have now all seen what he can do (without giving him the win), albeit a short stint. TICK. They have avoided the embarrassment of direct comparison with Hamilton in the same car. TICK. They keep Hamilton happy because he has not been upstaged. TICK. The keep Russell happy because he can see success on the horizon. TICK.

Can you imagine if Russell had won after being in that same car for only two days? Hamilton's $70 million contract would have halved in future earnings. This way, they keep Hamilton as long as he wants, and they want, and they keep Russell in their back seat anyway.

There is no way, the top team of the last 10 years, buggers up a pit stop that badly. No way.

Love F1 since I was very young (Im not there anymore)

Ayrton Senna was my all time favourite Sports identity.

I try and stay up for most races.

I was a real fan of Senna, but I was in awe of Niki Lauda making a comeback after that crash at Nurburgring, he should have won the 1976 world championship, the last race at Japan should never have been run and wouldn’t be nowadays.

I used to watch a lot of F1 but haven’t for at least 10 years. Senna was my favorite growing up and later Villeneuve.

Anyway, my wife has in recent times become acquainted with the wife of a current F1 driver. Our kids go to the same school and we went to his kids bday. I won’t say his name because he values his anonymity.

That is pretty cool mate, I would love that.
