We had Foxtel for years, now we have Kayo. I’d say we’re part of an observable trend. Kayo, Binge etc. are the vs guards of Fox disentangling of Foxtel into discrete chunks - sport, movies, TV...

I’d love for the NRL to do more. I should be able to watch any NRL game on demand and a whole range of pre-2000 games. I’d pay a fee to access such a library if it was reasonable.

As soon as the NRL start doing more that starts to eat in to their broadcast partners revenue. That's why there has been pushback against the NRL digital arm.

Foxtel have long contract deals with Telstra and also with nbn for infrastructure access rights. Unless they will write them off they will keep Foxtel running.

They are strategically moving more to streaming as thats low cost, minimal infrastructure and becomes just a rights claim.

Issue is that they are behind and Disney now owning most things including ESPN etc are expected in 2025 to drive a significant change in the sport streaming world which may/may not impact Kayo/Foxtel rights on international sports coverage.

I’m talking about things the broadcast partners don’t do. I can’t go onto Kayo and watch every game our 2010 season for instance. When I say any NRL game I mean from an archive perspective.

For a long time Telstra held the rights to previous seasons. It is getting better though, you can watch every origin game, all games back to 2018 and a lot of classic games at https://www.nrl.com/tv/

do you think the nrl will ever offer a season pass in Australia?
when I was in the states for 2 month I had the nrlvapp it was pretty good all the nrl shows like 360 plus all the games

I doubt it

why do you think Cochise , not enough population for it ? it seems to work ok in the u.s. for nfl NBA etc

Even in the US they have blackouts in the local area of the games to allow tv broadcasters to broadcast games. The NFL tried having Thursday nights games as exclusives for the NFL network and even that failed. At some point the Streaming services will turn their eye to live sport in Australia, Disney is already doing that in the US.

Basically the only way to do it is to go alone and then you are up for all the production work and costs the broadcast partners currently do for you.

Good points
After enduring chanel 9 for GF and SOO we can't afford to lose foxtel God help us

At some point traditional foxtel will go, that is why News limited has started the transition to streaming through Kayo and Binge.

Streaming rights are the ones to watch out for. Sounds like 2025 is d day

Yeah that is the way it will go, Telstra was getting streaming bundled with the naming rights and website deal. Kayo has in my opinion been great since it launched, I think Disney is the most likely to look most likely of the current streaming giants to make the jump to live sports here.

Disney did a deal with Murdoch a couple of years ago, he’s probably a major share holder.

It’s a very murky world

Good information and realistically i have free streaming from Telstra with my current phone plan but i also have Kayo which i have unsubscribed now the season has finished.
If its till 2022 lets hope we are competitive by then?

Ha me too. Kayo went the moment the tigers were gone.

And right when we are talking about it ch 9 launches Stan Sports and has signed a contract with Rugby Australia
https://www.adnews.com.au/news/nine-launches-stan-sports-with-100-million-rugby-deal

Interesting with Stan apparently 1 free to air game per week of Super Rugby on Ch 9.
Good luck to RA i think probably not a good move but time will tell.
As the league is with foxtel most people may switch and watch some super rugby but probably will not pay separate for Stan unless you are a die-hard Rugby man

if Stan Sport can get the Rugby and also make a play down the track for EPL soccer then it is game on.
Foxtel / Kayo have rights to end of 2027 i think

Yes

Thanks. Might have to reconsider. I have Foxtel and got used to being able to cast foxtel go during their pandemic relief. Now you have to pay for multiroom to allow casting.

Yes, I use chromecast. The new chromecast can have Kayo installed directly onto it.
