Friend sacked by Roosters
THE Sydney Roosters have terminated the NRL contract of hooker Jake Friend following his latest alcohol-related indiscretion.
The club released a statement today announcing the decision, which comes after Friend was charged last weekend for alleged aggressive behaviour towards police.
It was the third alcohol-related incident Friend has been involved in this year after a drink-driving conviction and a charge for an alleged nightclub assault.
"Jake has accepted responsibility for his actions and the club recognises the fact that he is only 19 years old and was brought to Sydney as a 16-year-old and requires further support,'' the club statement said.
"The club, with a number of specialist consultants, will work with Jake to ensure he gets the right rehabilitation to help him address these challenges in his life.''
Friend signed a three-year contract with the Roosters earlier this year.
NRL CEO David Gallop said the National Rugby Leaguesupported the actions of both the Sydney Roosters and the Cronulla Sharks in dealing "with recent disciplinary issues".
"In both cases we believe the clubs have dealt with the matter appropriately,'' he said today. "It would seem important now that Jake is given time to address his challenges and we therefore would be highly unlikely to consider any new application to register any future club contract with him in the short to medium term.
"I don't see that a firm time-line can be established at this point except to say that we would need to see strong evidence that he has addressed the issues that have led him to this point. At the same time there is a clear message to everyone that the clubs and the players need to maintain the appropriate standards."
