NSW skipper Paul Gallen has been ruled out of the first Origin game because of a hip injury.

The Cronulla forward suffered a rare tendon tear in his buttocks and hips, which has ruled him out of the May 27 encounter. Blues coach Laurie Daley said it was a big decision to rule Gallen out.

"After talking, Gal and I decided it is in the best interests of the team to get the injury healed," Daley said.

"It was a really difficult decision for us both to come to because Gal, as captain, is such an important part of our team, and he places such a high value on playing for NSW."

Gallen's injury comes as a further blow to a NSW side who are looking to retain the Origin shield. Gallen, Greg Bird and Brett Morris are now all sidelined.

Hooker Robbie Farah will lead the Blues in Gallen's absence while Trent Merrin is expected to play lock. David Klemmer could now make his Origin debut from the interchange bench.

Farah the obvious choice for (C)….hope it inspires him to lift for us...

Keefy on the bench - seriously? I think they can do better, tbh.

I agree with what Gould's been saying about time to move on.

Out with the grubs like Bird, Gallen and Reynolds.

Qld play as smart as they do tough, and matching that's the challenge.

The unfortunate reality for NSW is there's no halves pairing that can come up with match winning plays.

Adam Reynolds should have been in the team last year, and will be missed this year.

Winning plays may come down to Robbie and god knows that can be a bit hit and miss.

Will be interesting to see which way the go with the back row now.

I also agree with Goulds comments but think there will be a balance rather than 3 or 4 rookies.

Something like

11 Jackson
12 Scott
13 Merrin

Personally, I think they will be a better team with no Gallen or Bird.

I think you will see:

11\. Cordner
12\. Scott
13\. Merrin

These boys can all play 80min leaving NSW with the luxury of picking 4 Props. I'd opt for Toleman over Klemmer. It just makes more sence considering he starts over him at Club Level and Woods/Fifita are still young.

Josh Jackson can play tight or wide, and has been one of the best backrowers in the comp & City/Country, so he will be on the Bench.

Then the other question will be whether Farah plays 80min. If so, Moylan will get named on the Bench.

Noticed all the promos feature Farah and hardly anyone else - must be the only sure thing at he moment.

The one that is probably a dead cert that we are both forgetting is Hoffman.

Could be

11\. Hoffman
12\. Scott
13\. Merrin

Hoffman or Scott but not both… They wont leave out Cordner & Jackson.

Don't know how you could leave out Hoffman or Scott.
I know the other two are good players but I would have those two in front of them every day.

NSW bench will have one prop and 3 backrowers with Lewis as the utility no doubt

Luke Lewis is the Lindner of NSW , ignore his club form he steps it up big time whenever he sticks on his states jersey
