Getting the best out of benji

Whether u love or hate him Benji Marshall,he has more impact on the result of Wests tigers games than any other player. We have seen him take control, dominate the opposition with stunning play in all areas of the game many of times…on the other side...we have seen benji not perform,be outplayed, and try to hard making mistakes which have cost the side.My argument today which i put to you all is.......in **2005** the year the wests tigers won their first premiership, the year we all cherish..i believe Benji Marshalls finest year of football,Benji wore the number **6**,and played like a five eighth.Yes the tigers had a great hb then in Scott Prince that did bring out the best in Benji, but Benji played his best footy hitting gaps, using his acceleration and speed, and the benji step to punish other teams. He ran the ball.Since the departure of Prince Benji has been playing like a hb whether we have an adequate hb or not in the game. His game has not been consistent because he is not a natural hb,and the only way we will get the best out of Benji i believe if he is made to revert back to the number 6 and play as he did in 05.Leaving the kicking, and playmaking 95% of the time to the number 7 whether that be Jacob Miller or whoever gets the start.

He needs to accept and realise before anything else there are other coaches out there that can take his game to another level….once he admits that (if he really believes what he says) then he may grow, mature, improve

Imo 2010/11 were his best two years, hard to split them.

Agree. he floated in and out of games in 05 and let Prince dominate. In 10 and 11 he single handedly took teams apart.

2011 was his best season and 2012 is his worst season (he is fit but playing poorly). He is great when he can be a 5/8 and funny enough he (and we) has always made the finals when he plays 5/8 with a proper halfback (not johnny cronk) who gets to play out the season in that role.

Miller is the key to getting the best from Benji imo.

I agree that 2010 and 2011 were his best seasons so far, he wore the mantle of best player in the world in that period.

I think it's harsh to say that he played poorly or let us down in 2012 - he made I think 33 try assists and about the same line-break assists, more than Cooper Cronk. These are very good figures. And he was running 4th in the Forum player of the year comp, so many people on here must have thought he played well on a fair number of occasions.

Get him back to 5/8 is all that needs doing.

Put him alongside a good link man and solid organiser and he'll thrive once again. He was the go to guy all year, and while it wasn't his best season, he still topped the comp for try assists and line break assists and scored quite a few points.

If Anasta gets a shot in the halves then I think he'll work well with Benji, likewise young Sirro.

Yes, and that is why I think Anasta is a great signing. With Anasta doing the organising, Benji can focus on what he does best. Miller would do a good job too.

Let him go to Cronulla. While he is with the tigers the rest of the team stand around waiting for him to do something. Without him they might all need to have a go and start playing like a team.

Thats so true Anasta will move the team around and Benji does the magic i cant wait for a huge year next year.

I think 2011 was his better year but 2010 was not far behind! And we can only hope 2013 - 2015 are even better than 2011

x2

Injuries and experimenting with FB, 5/8 and 7 did not help.
I never understood why we did not persist with Miller at 7, and when Tedesco was injured with Brown, Simona, Moaney, Rowe or Rudolph at FB. :frowning:

Please just get a 1/2 back that's 90percent right there …. Sheens has killed Benjis development and this can be rectified by a new coach , I believe that we haven't seen the best of him yet .

I'm Intrigued to see how Benji & Blair play tonight compared to what they produced on a whole with us this year.

Play him at #6 and take the goal kicking duties away from him. As much as he improved a lot this year, he can do without that added pressure. Anasta will do a good job as a replacement goal kicker.
