Gibbs

Funny how this time last year we were all so excited about the prospect of signing 'big name' players like Blair & guys like Gibbs were so easily dispensible.

Funny thing is, while I was against letting Gibbs go last year, I've softened on that stance. Sheens obviously felt that Woods could do the job, and let's be honest- Matt Bell would fit the role Gibbs would have been asked to fill this year- off the bench, tackle a lot.

People putting the boot in on Groat are being premature. That guy has ability. He struggled early this year, no doubt, but I get the feeling he'll be back.

And Blair will more than likely work out. It's taking longer than I'd like it to, but I'm sure eventually we'll see the results we hope for. Here's a question- how many players leave the Storm & succeed at the same level elsewhere?

We have never been a really great defensive team and to let your best defender go was a big call. In saying that Gibbs was starting to cop a lot of injuries so I would imagine that came into play when they decided to offload him.

Just on the Sharks, how good is Wade Grahame going,we made a play for him a few years ago but the Sharks offered a lot more. He is the type of player we need

They won last night on the back of the attitude they played with in the first half, bashed the broncos senseless

What Smeg is trying to say and it's something I agree with is that with the responsibilities that have been put on Woods' shoulders since Gibbs' departure, it's brought Woods out of his shell and the player we know as Aaron Woods has now emerged. Seems like Tim took a gamble on Woods thinking that it's better to have a high standard prop for the next 10 years or 2 more years. Im thinking Tim made the right choice and comfortable with it.

True, but I reckon Sheens would've been banking on both Woods AND Groat stepping up this year. His choice worked with one, but not the other, unfortunately. Hence, the big panic to secure an experienced prop 6 rounds into the season (Mason, Cashmere).

Humpty was quoted at the start of the season saying we were a prop short. Salary cap issue were the driving force behind releasing Gibbs and you can only a release a player that another club wants and is willing to pay as much or even more to get his services. So it was probably that Gibbs was in demand, rather than the Tigers actually singled him out to be the player they would offload. Shame because without him and his mate Liam we are a very average defensive outfit

Agreed.

You can't keep everyone. And you can't predict how a player will perform if you kept him, or let him go to another club.

From what I have seen this season at Cronulla has been Gibbs' best for some time - it looks to me that leaving the Tigers was re-invigorating for Gibbs and let Sheens develop our young forwards. Good decision for all parties.

I have to agree, who knows if Gibbs would be having such a good year if he was still at the Tigers? In the limited times I've seen him this year he seems to have more "punch" in attack than what he produced at the Tigers last year, though like I said I've only seen him a few times.

Have to admit that it was sad to see him go.

Lot of wallpapering going on here….He was our best defensive forward.....you keep your best.

Yep. You would have thought the club would have kept him. It was a big risk paying overs for Blair when we had Gibbs as a player probably getting paid unders.

Why did we let this bloke go? Awesome defender. There are a few others that should have gone before him.

100% agree

Gibbs is going good this year, but I dont think he is playing any better than what he was while at the Tigers (100% Fit). Woods was always gona be a star with 2-3 years fulltime in the NRL, but as Flip mentioned, I think Sheens was also hoping Groat went to a new level in 2012\. How is Matt going since returning from injury? Did he get good minutes last start in the 20's?

On Gibbs, I highly doubt it was 'salary cap' pressure considering how freely we have been throwing coin around, so maybe he was let go for other reasons that we are not aware of?

The way some people are carrying on you'd think he was the best prop since Beetson.
Let's be honest - he's no more than a run of the mill firstgrader - not a superstar.
It was sad to see him go because he loved the joint but he was becoming injury prone and gave away a lot of bonehead penalties.
It's about time to get over it.

That's a pretty good summary of things…
