Glenn Stewart to miss grudge match with Adam Blair

ROUND two of rugby league's ugliest grudge match is on hold with Manly star Glenn Stewart certain to miss Friday's night's rematch against Wests Tigers recruit Adam Blair.

Stewart and Manly centre Steve Matai are set to be sidelined long-term with five-eighth Kieran Foran also poised to miss the Tigers game.

Utility player Ben Farrar won't play again this NRL season, meaning more than $1m of Manly talent will be sidelined after only one round.

Stewart was due to have X-rays on an injured finger last night with the results to be known early this morning. Sea Eagles officials are resigned to losing him for up to six weeks.

Matai has a hand injury and he too could be out for six games, with officials to know more about the injury today.

Foran sustained a lower leg injury during Sunday's match against New Zealand and was spotted yesterday wearing a moonboot. It would take a miracle for him to be fit for Friday evening.

Stewart and Blair engaged in the now infamous sideline fight during a round-26 match at Brookvale last year, with both players being suspended for three games.

While Blair never played for Melbourne again, Stewart returned for Manly's grand final win.

Stewart hurt his finger during the early minutes of Sunday's 26-20 at Eden Park. Twice he came to the sideline for treatment. Showing considerable courage though, he played on and ended up scoring the match-winning try in the 71st minute.

The Daily Telegraph spied Foran outside the Manly dressing room on Sunday - he could barely walk.

And in a further blow to Manly, utility player Farrar hurt his knee on the weekend and could miss the entire season. Farrar rejoined the Sea Eagles from Catalans this year but injured himself in Saturday's NSW Cup game against Western Suburbs at Lidcombe Oval.

New coach Geoff Toovey will have to dig deep to cover Matai and Stewart. He may look at bringing centre Dean Whare into his backline for Matai or use young centre Jorge Taufua. Taufua, signed from Parramatta, was chosen in Manly's 18-man squad for the Warriors game but was cut before kick-off.

Toovey may in fact play both and shift Jamie Lyon to five-eighth for Foran.

As for Stewart's replacement, Toovey may opt for Joe Galuavo, who is expected to return this week from an achilles injury.

Stewart's creativity will be sorely missed.

As long as we don't go into the game thinking it's going to be an automatic win with these players out…..

I hope they play. The win will be even more sweeter. Nothing like sending home the Sea-Pigeons.

That's exactly how I think! I don't like playing teams with major player injuries. It's better to beat a full strength side than a half strength side. Another reason, however is I don't want us taking them on lightly!

Another typical beat up from the telegraph. As if Blair and Stewart would be stupid enough to go at it again. When the brawl happened they said it was the worst thing in the history of rugby league, now they are running it as a story. The telegraph is a blight on our great game.

If these players are out, we will come close to beating them. If they were to play they would smash us.

Jeez Bug, would it hurt to be positive once in your life mate?

Even if Stewart, Foran et al are out, our boys will still have to be sharp. The Sea Bogans have still got B. Stewart, Lyon, DCE and others that can still put points on the board.

If we match it up front, we will go a long way to winning this. They'll try to bash us from pillar to post.

Good, now the papers can shut up about it. The less press we get, the better. Hopefully they keep focusing on how hard done by Manly have been this week and the couple of injuries they have.

either way, this is the time for blair to step up.
his involvement against the sharks was poor.2nd half he only put his hand up for a hit up twice.
showed no leg drive or intent with his runs.

i understand the conditions were not ideal sunday, but friday night i want to see less hanging around the back and showing some leadership out there when we need it,just like ellis did from his very first game for the tigers.

it is these type of games we need the firepower he is supposed to bring.
i hope he wins me over starting friday night because we are going to have some inexperienced forwards out there.

I dunno….they looked very good beating last years GFinalists over there
We struggled and was lucky at our cauldron to get over last years 4th last

Ink it's not realistic to say we just beat last seasons 4th last team, that sharks side has had an overhaul, they're completely different and much stronger, sharks a good team, it was great to get the win
