Got an idea about Woods

Okay, so leaving aside all this contract BS which i think and hope will amount to nothing, straight up I think we could use Woods at Lock.

He's a good, if not very good defender, has decent hands for a front rower and can pick up decent metres just like Gallen does. I think it would allow us to utilise some of our other props better since we've now got a lot. Woods, Galloway, BMM, Taupau, Buchanan, Blair etc. etc.

Might be a bit out there, prepared to get shot down :slight_smile:

He doesn't have the mobility to play lock. Blair and Fulton are better options

True, but he is as mobile as gallen, surely? And he's one of the best locks around right now.

Taking away his footwork and ball playing will make him predictable and ineffective. What makes him great is his ability to change up each hitup to keep the defense guessing

I think it could be a good idea. I think we should be playing basically 3 props anyway with the lock position for a prop like player. It could be trialled to see how it goes.

I think BMM and Sue could also rotate well in that role.

Then again he goes pretty well at prop and if it ain't broke why fix it.

I think he needs to find the middle ground between footwork and power, he's relying a bit too much on it right now and needs to run a bit harder while still using his feet and body contortions to make sure he wins the ruck and picks up a couple of extra metres every run.

He was caught out in origin a bit cause of that, although some of that was simply not being prepared for the massive step up i reckon. Everyone's playing 100%, no half assed fringe 1st graders you might find in the NRL, everyone's a step above.

I am a big believer in the 5 man prop rotation, lock being a slightly specialised prop. That said, I dont think Woods is best utilised at lock.

I see Sue as a lock, and Blair in an performing pack, but Woods is a straight prop.

Woods is awesome dont get me wrong, but you have to think of burden too. Woods is consistant, but Blair is wiley, Sue is hard. I am unsure an 80min lock is the go today, think Segayaro impact forward, OK a hooker, but its the change of style that works. Woods like Sauce is a little low on the speed factor, the final series this yr a under-weight Manly shanked the Bunnies up the middle, that was mobility and speed, working the ruck, quick play the balls, something both Blair and Sue ( not there yet but he finds the ground via agression) to an extent can provide. Get props to bang, locks to punch and provide ruck speed, God knows we need them to tighten up the ruck.

Been bashed for a long time but sauce kills with slow play the ball, Robbie has less room to move.Blair knows how to make it happen, and Sue hits that hard he noses through to his guts, should be working on by now. We have to learn to run the tackle count…. Settle, probe with forwards to find the quick play for say 2 tackles and should find it if we are worth our salt, then either punch for one or 2 more or unleash a back, off quick play the ball...

This year we dont have to re-invent the game, its all about realising potential, when it matters especially. 3rd tackle chips shouldnt be the norm, we have the cattle. Lock is a specialist position, with Kidwell and Blair, Sue is the man, not Woods.

Woods could become even better and it gives another prop spot which is good since we have a lot of props and not many locks.

But I see your point, BnW. Probably should leave woodsy at prop. Mostly thought of him cause he puts up so many tackles at prop.

It seems we are current posters Phyre, dont hate me for knocking your posts on the head, even though they are only my personal opinion, thankfully there are much more educated folks making the major decisions.

He basically plays like a lock currently.

Not a traditional hard running front rower.

Has the skills, but will need to work on leg speed and mobility in the off season. But there isn't a massive dif between lock and front row these days.

I'm not a fan of moving Woods, but I have to mention Trent Merrin who was moved to lock and played well, still making Origin as a bench prop and he posses no more size/skill/speed or footwork over Woods. Its not completely unheard of and I don't think Woods would be bad at lock.

I just think for Wests Tigers we don't have many good experienced props while we have a number of decent locks ready to step up, Sue would be my first choice.

Who else have we got at lock after sue? fultons good at tightening defence, nice footwork i guess.
