Can't really argue with Gus there.
We have not scored point in 3 straight 2nd halves.
Our lower grades are getting smashed.
Players not signing contracts.
How can we improve our fitness during the season, we look so far off the base?
We have not even had an injury yet.

If Ivan comes in off the street and wins 5 or 6 games for the year where does that leave him as a coach?

It leaves him as a coach who'll likely not renew the majority of the playing group.

If they don't dip in for the rest of the year, it will be the players who will pay dearly, most off contract, little bargaining power if you wind up in the wooden spooner side.

Another article that's much ado about nothing. The board nor supporters (the ones with brains anyway) would have no expectations on Cleary to perform miracles on the field. I'd say for the majority of us we just want to see him clear the deadwood, re-sign who we want to re-sign and make a bit of an impact in the player market. Results on field for this year mean zilch to him imo.

I dont really agree with Gould; he is only pointing out temporary shortcomings at the tigers imo.

there is plenty of upside for the incoming coach:
- the cap situation is finally looking like it will clear up, allowing greater than usual influence over the roster
- with so many players coming off contract he can also use this area to make changes
- he will have a nearly unprecedented opportunity mould his team to his game plan from more of a fresh start.
unsurprisingly, i think the media is going a bit overboard with the whole tigers in crisis thing.
okay, i dont really know the internal runnings, but things like this happen in sporting clubs. they get into messes and have to work to get out of them. i think they are doing things the right way and there is light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.
(no, its not a train heading their way…).

What Bogan said…

Everyone has written this year off anyway..Cleary wont be judged on results from 2017 ..if he can somehow get more wins out of this mob it's only an upside for him...

I'll be judging on the calibre of replacement he can bring to the Club for 2018 more than anything...

It's the players who should be worrying more than anyone..

Yep exactly. He'll be judged on 2018 onwards.

If Cleary gets us into 9th-10th that would be overachieving given our start.

The players owe it to their futures to make the most of the rest of the year. Even some of the "big four." Brooks and Moses will not command the money they think they will get if they continue to play like busteds.

Any well credentialed coach would be busting the door down at Concord ..how many coaches that are appointed get the opportunity to basically build a team from scratch with basically no players signed for next season and a club with a fist full of $$$.
The fitness will take care of it self as the season progresses, if Cleary does sign I think there will be a huge improvement overall this season..OK so we just miss the 8 !for the first time in a decade this will finally be a rebuilding year ,I am very positive about the future right from the get go if Cleary comes on board.

I'm not surprised Gould is putting the boot in. I wouldn't think he would want Cleary to take the job.

If he does take it - it can only mean Cleary pinching 'x' amount of Panthers players.

Gus wouldn't like that!!!!

I read an article le from Gould this morning about our fitness… It mentioned nothing about him "warning cleary"

I think it is more to do with our players weak-mindedness more so than lack of fitness that has seen us perform so dismally in 2nd halfs this season. The WT way is to throw in the towel when things get tough instead of digging in for the battle.
I also find it amusing that Gus is an expert on fitness supposedly…..he himself looks 11 months pregnant.

Journalistic licence! People in here are getting better and better at leaping to conclusions and reinterpreting public comments.

It's got a lot to do with our bench. We started the season with a centre and hooker and last week we lost two to injury and when one bench player is a hooker it only leaves you with one forward on the bench. Last week we had to keep Ava on bench until 70yh min and all the other forwards were gassed.

A better bench will see us finish halves and games much better.

I think it's bloody obvious that we are not fit. It's a walkathon for us after halftime.
Not sure a first grade team could be so out of condition As this team is
The red light comes on usually about 10 minutes before halftime, and there's points there for the taking almost every game.
The tries that Gus referred to were a terrible example of laziness from our blokes.
Rapana loves playing us as we turn off and have a bludge regularly.
The try last year where he started to run at a group of4or 5 of our team, and realised that no one was going to ( or couldn't) make the effort to tackle him. He just ran around them all at about half speed and no one bothered to even make an effort to stop him
I'm not sure what they did in the off season, but fitness wasn't a major part of it obviously,

What I want to know is why are we so underdone? What were they doing (or rather not doing) in the off season that has put them so far behind the rest of the teams, physically? That's unacceptable for a first grade NRL squad really.

“If I’m Ivan Cleary, I don’t know that Wests Tigers is my number one choice,” Gould said on his ‘Six Tackles with Gus’ podcast for Wide World of Sports.

“A rebuild is a really hard job. If he looks at that, they haven’t got those four blokes (stars Aaron Woods, James Tedesco, Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks) on contract, their lower grades are going poorly, the NRL team itself is going poorly … what upside is there?

At least do your research boys before making yourselves look silly

Umm where's that article where he is whole heartedly encouraging Cleary to take the job at the Tigers? Said something along the lines of great opportunity etc. Talk about a contradiction!

I mentioned this in the fitness thread, but ill repeat it here.

Mate of mine ran into a veteran first grader in January. My mate asked him how the preseason training was going and said you must have been getting flogged to which the man of interest replied " no not really, this is the easiest pre season ive ever done" than went on to say they had been focusing more on skills and attack.
So theres your reason. Nothing more, nothing less.

It most likely adds a lot more weight to why JT was sacked so early too. I mean Jesus Christ, the writing was/is deadset on the wall, the team is underprepared.

Well the boys mustn't have been listening to JT even though it was predominantly skills and attack-based training because our skills are as bad as they have ever been: ball handling and kicking in particular. And our attack has been non existent apart from 1st halves against Souths and Storm.

Gus is probably trying to help Ivan get more money so he can turn around and say "see son, I fired you for your own good!"
