Wests Tigers have today announced the appointment of Grant Mayer as the Club’s new Chief Executive Officer.

The Board last night endorsed the appointment after reflecting on the high level of dedicated service provided by Mayer as Chief Operating Officer over the past two months, which has provided the Club with some significant challenges.

“We felt it was important to be decisive to demonstrate to our players, staff, sponsors and the game’s administrators that Wests Tigers are in strong hands and are ready to face the future. This was a unanimous decision by the Board,’’ Club Chairman Mike Bailey said.

“Our operations benefitted from his past experience immediately he was elevated following the departure of Stephen Humphreys. We were very fortunate to have Grant on board since last year, giving him time to become involved with issues affecting Wests Tigers before taking on this key role.

“Grant deserves congratulations from the Board and all involved with the Club as he continues to develop initiatives he has been developing over the past couple of months to put Wests Tigers on a stronger footing to strengthen its player profiles and sponsorship deals for improved results in the future.”

Wests Tigers Deputy Chairman and Balmain Tigers Director Nick Di Girolamo strongly endorsed Mayer’s appointment.

“Grant is passionate about this Club and he has consistently shown strong leadership at all levels of our operations,” Di Girolamo said.

“He has been openly and strongly communicative with the Board. Grant has worked very well with the chairman and myself and I look forward to working him with the future.”

Mayer joined Wests Tigers in the role of General Manager of Commercial Operations last October after holding a similar position for three years at AFL Club, GWS Giants.

His extensive background in sports administration saw him work for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs for six years as an Events and Operations Manager.
>
Mayer then spent three years as Chief Executive Officer at the Manly Sea Eagles as well as a 10 month stint at French Rugby League Club, the Catalan Dragons.
>
During this time, Mayer crossed paths with current Wests Tigers NRL Coach Mick Potter who joined the Catalans Club late in the 2006 season.

Mayer said he was extremely honoured to be appointed to the CEO position.

“I am in a very fortunate position to have made a career out of something I love. I believe in the Wests Tigers and am confident that the Club is now moving in the right direction,’’ Mayer said.

“I am working overtime to ensure that we re-sign some of the game’s best young talent. I also want to ensure that Wests Tigers train and play out of the best facilities possible and that we continue to foster strong relationships with our corporate and membership base. These people are our lifeblood.

I like the appointment, but it is funny that he wants to ensure Tigers train and play out of the best facilities possible. He hardly had this impact with Manly and Brookie oval.

He moved their training from Brookvale Oval into the NSW Institute of Sport in Narrabeen if memory serves me correctly

He has been out their and talking to people who love the Tigers, so I applaud the decision.Come 2014 the honeymoon will be over, all the talk will amount to nothing unless the club is showing real signs of heading in the right direction, although I think he has what it takes to make us competitive again

Looking forward to the next few years, not to say Ivé totally given up hope for this year, but just about.

You do realise that Mayer is challenging the club and giving it a good clean-up don't you? Why hire someone else when someone's already doing what you want within the club and wanted the job??

Easy option maybe, but maybe the real work was done in recruiting him a year ago with a possible plan for succession?!

Its true this has been a no brainer for the board. He fell into their lap so to speak.

But sometimes these things happen, for me his qualifications are top notch, he has spent enough time with us to know the ins and outs to hit the ground running. And his actions since taking over as COO have all been positive as far as I'm concerned.

Sometimes its better not to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Don't confuse this with criticism, but so far im not sure what he's done besides answer a few tweets from supporters about recruitment that has everyone singing him with praise.

Re-signed Simona, Koroibete, Lovett. Moved on a few players who needed to be moved on. Saved the club from potentially spending overs on an underperforming marquee player. Putting in plans to improve our football department, ie facilities, staff etc.

Acknowledging our failings is a huge thing for me. Agree that our previous contract situation was a joke and promise it would be rectified going forward. Benjis contract is probably the first truly big thing Mayer has presided over, and I think it was handled as well as it could have been.

The rest of his actions has all been minor stuff, but its the transparency and apparent class with how we have moved forward is the most positive.

I'd like examples of players he's said we are chasing, players he's said we werent but ended up signing….nothing wrong with denying rumours, puts the crap to rest nice and quick.

He is terrific, hands on....he's no mug, too shrewd to put us at any disadvantage

What does "Weatherman Mike" bring to the Wests Tigers ?
Yes, he could present the weather forecast well and yes he speaks well and MC's Magpies functions well …. But what does he bring to the Wests Tigers on a professional basis ?

The handling of Benjis contract was nothing short of a debacle. The clubs board and management of the day promised an upgrade and then reneged when the players form fell away. The same board who signed Sheens to a 3 year contract then sacked him after one.
We may well have a good, decent and professional CEO with a lot of good ideas and improvements for the future. But it's the same board that Humphreys had to report to that Mayer has to report to. How he deals with that will be his biggest challenge of all.
