Harry Grant

How’s this for an idea.
Instead of agitating for Harry to leave Melbourne and sign with us.
Madge and Belly have a chat and strike a new loan deal with conditions.
The Warriors and other club loans have opened up this type of new arrangement.
The deal is, if Smith plays on Harry can stay with us for 1 more year. As long as Simpkin can go to Melbourne and learn off Smith.
At any stage during the year, injury cover whatever Melbourne have the option of playing Simpkin or asking for Harry back giving us back Simpkin. After that the loan has ceased. And the players are back at there original clubs for the remainder of their contracts.
Should mentioned I’d be just as happy if this was organised with Brandon Smith as an alternative.
Does it have merit? Or would Simpkins be better off training with us day to day?

Wouldn't be going all in on Grant yet.
He has come back to the pack the last two weeks as teams have figured out cheating at marker is permitted. Also want to see a bit more of a kicking game before shelling out huge $$$.

Very happy to have him here, but not prepared to give him a ridiculous contract (yet).

He won't be a Tiger next year, I'd bet vital parts of my anatomy on it.

Double or nothing?

I'm down with that:joy:

Hats off to Madge the man never rests trying to improve the team. Results or otherwise the bloke targets almost everyone available. It’s a smart plan Simpkin will be ready by then and we get a better picture of Liddles recovery.

Wow just wow.
Did I just read that this is actually a possibility and that the tigers are looking into this???

Bold Tigers plan could solve Grant-Smith conundrum for Storm
By Adrian Proszenko
July 15, 2020 — 6.08pm

Wests Tigers are keen to keep Harry Grant for an extra year if Cameron Smith opts to play for another season, as part of a deal that would allow the rising rake to eventually return to the Storm.

Smith’s future is set to come to a head in the coming weeks, with all parties keen to know if the former Queensland and Australia skipper plans to play a 19th season in the NRL. Should he do so, Melbourne risk losing natural successor Grant, a youngster capable of owning the Storm No.9 jersey for the next decade.

Grant is signed to the Storm until the end of 2022, but has a clause in his contract that allows him to become a free agent should Smith play on next season.

Melbourne loaned Grant to the Tigers as part of a player-swap with Paul Momirovski to give him more game time. The young dummy half has made the most of his opportunity, emerging as a candidate for Maroons honours.

The Tigers are working on a plan that could result in a win for all parties. If Smith plays for one more season, the joint-venture outfit proposes that Grant stays with them for 2021, on the proviso he recommits to Melbourne the following year. That would allow Smith to play another season without fear of repercussions, while the Tigers would benefit from having the NRL’s best young hooker at their disposal for another 12 months.

It will also boost Grant's development as a starting No.9, an opportunity the Storm can’t provide while Brandon Smith and Cameron Smith are on their books.

The proposal would also give the Tigers time to replace Grant. They already have promising youngster Jake Simpkin on their roster. Billy Walters and injured hooker Jacob Liddle will also have time to press their claims as the long-term dummy half.

Grant has been unfazed by the tug-of-war for his services.

“At the moment, I’m just focused 100 per cent on the Tigers and then whatever happens,” he said on Tuesday.

Ok maybe not the Simpkins loan part but, I would seriously consider that as a condition of the extension as we would be better off with Momirovski next year in the centres in first grade then we would be with Simpkins playing reserve grade.
The smart thing with suggesting Harry is loaned to tigers for 21 is that. Harry knows what his future holds. He doesn’t have to enact his get out clause if he is stuck behind Smith and he wont have to worry about not playing first grade or finding another club more suited as I would say he would be keen to be the long term hooker for Melbourne once Smith hangs up the boots, I’d say Melbourne would be keen on him returning as their long term hooker as well.

If Harry Grant is at tigers next year Simpkin wont be

Mate, his still a kid. I saw him close at the ground. He does not look ready. Stocky guy but wouldn’t have the hardened body yet. He hasn’t even played Qld Cup and played one Game of NSW cup.

He came to the tigers from the Broncos for an opportunity not to get stuck behind a bloke that ballzed his own contract up

Same age as Reece Hoffman same amount of reserve grade games cobber

Really, thought Reece played more Qld Cup than Simpkin and he stayed in colts?
Shouldn’t we learn a lesson from both the fortunes of Grant and Liddle?
Liddle had half a season of NSW Cup then got moved into First Grade / suffered injuries and has played 30 games.
Grant has spent 2 years in QLD Cup and played 3 games of first grade. Not sure about injuries but he has been able to hit the ground running...
For me the way Melbourne handles their younger prospects seems to be a better path than the path we took.

No mate Reece only played 1 game for wynnum Jake played 1 for the magpies should have played cup for wynnum but things didnt go his way

Ok no worries, so you really think he won’t cool his heals one more year, especially since this year there is no lower grade football?

I don’t disagree with you but then you have the problem where guys leave the club because they aren’t getting a start.

It’s also much easier to do when you have a guy like Cam Smith and a top 4 side. We had ET playing hooker, we didn’t have the luxury of waiting 2 years.

So SMH is reporting that if Cameron Smith plays on the tigers would like to extend Harry’s loan another year. Seems smart to me

Simpkin won’t leave, he’s still a teenager and not even had a full season of reserve grade. He should be expecting to not play first grade at least until 2022.

The club needs to get its OWN players ! again just like home grounds they like fence sitting , you never get ahead with these types of decisions. How is this good for anyone ... you either want to work with who you HAVE , it’s a slap in the face to Simpkin if I was him ask for a release plenty of clubs want an aspiring 9 on there books there in short supply . Yep let’s beg for Melbourne to loan Harry for next season ! The club needs to wake up ...
