What’s the Buzz: It’s decision time as Cameron Smith expected to resolve his 2021 status this week

The Titans want him to lead their young guns, the Broncos want him to lead their resurrection – and the Storm just wants answers. The pressure is on Cameron Smith to reveal his plans for 2021.

Melbourne Storm is turning up the heat on superstar Cameron Smith to make a decision on his future before next Sunday’s game against Manly.

They feel the champion hooker has now had long enough to make the call.

In mid-July Smith told your columnist he was three weeks away from making a decision.

It is now five weeks since he told this newspaper: “I’m not going to string them out and leave them high and dry. Either way I’ve got to give them a bit of a heads-up.”

Storm chairman Matt Tripp will speak to Smith and his agent, Isaac Moses, this week.

Because of Smith’s standing in the game, there has been no pressure until now.

The future of Brandon Smith and Harry Grant are resting on his decision, although Storm strongly deny Brandon Smith has a get-out clause or would even want to leave.

On Friday we spoke to Moses about the situation and talk of interest from the Gold Coast.

He insists there have been no discussions with the Titans, which would be right considering their salary cap pressure from already having two million-dollar players in David Fifita and Ash Taylor.
The Storm superstar is set to make his return from injury next weekend.

Smith, 37, is expected to make a comeback from a shoulder injury next Sunday against Manly.

Those closest to the former Kangaroos and Maroons skipper are tipping he will retire.

***He has been offered a job at the club and a position on the board.***

He just needs to make that call to allow his club to plan for next year and beyond.

So its ok for Melbourne to offer him a job post football before he has made his decision to retire. Pascoe should be asking for a please explain from the NRL.

Depends if they discuss it with the NRL or try and hide it from them.

Harry has been great, given an opportunity to play 1st grade and performed. Interesting I don’t think it matters to him what jersey he is wearing but his own preparation and performance.
He is going back to the storm and we wish him well and thanks fur you’d service whilst here.
Personally our issue is with our half’s and looking at liddle service I would like to see him play half and bring AD to 5/8 long term.
If Simpkin is as good as they state he should be getting an opportunity like Harry has to see if he performs at the top level.
Naturally that means moving on brooks/Marshall next season, hard decisions to come Madge.
But can you make them is the real ?

The difference is Farah was offered a job after footy whilst still contracted to us as an inducement to leave and play for another Club with 2 years to run....

Cammy is not contracted beyond this year..there is no inducement for him to break a contract..simply sign a new one no job yet or retire ..remain involved off the field..

Harry Grant didn't get an opportunity until he was 22, Simpkins is 18. That is why Grant has taken to 1st grade so well, he was given time to develop in the lower grades and was ready when his time came.

Fair point but assume if played last season at the storm would have been ready at 21.
Sounds like Simpkins a few years off, sounds like we need a Brandon smith to compliment either Hooker or half, certainly done with our current half’s combination Brooks/Marshall.
Game plan from Madge should also be ? cannot understand we just bomb away rather than taking the line on when required.

A few judges of footballers that I trust speak about how big a benefit that time in QLD cup was for Grant. I've heard them speak how many players are too eager to crack 1st grade for the money but it effects their long term development.

Even if Harry got out of his Storm contract , do you honestly think that he will stay with us?
The guy is a winner! He would want to join a club where the prospect of him winning a premiership are high!
I know I would.

Would be content with the Jakes, but Harry’s on field leadership is quite impressive for a young fella (contrasted to Brooks/Mbye etc) and wouldn’t say no IF the dominoes fell that way. As already known it’s almost no chance but would be good, with my only concern being potentially blocking Simpkin’s pathway. Never seen Simpkin so don’t know how he goes but from all reports he’s something special too.

Either way hooker probably isn’t our biggest problem next year. Matter of fact it’s probably the only part of the spine that is stable

Michael Maguire looms as the big Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon card to keep Harry Grant at the Wests Tigers should Cameron Smith play on at Melbourne next year.

Tigers fans are watching Smith's next move just as keenly as Storm supporters given it will have a large bearing on Grant's 2021 plans.

While Grant will return to the Storm and fight out the No. 9 jersey with Brandon Smith if Smith retires, he is not obligated to stick with the Tigers should the Melbourne legend play on.

There will be plenty of interest in the 22-year-old Queenslander if he becomes a free agent.

But sources close to Grant claim the Tigers will be in the box seat - and largely because of Maguire and his vision for the joint club.

The Tigers have just over $1 million to spend on five players next year. Josh Addo-Carr remains their key target while they will ramp up their sales pitch to Grant once they know he becomes a viable target.

Fan favourite Benji Marshall was told to move on this week, but Tigers supporters will be devastated should Grant end up anywhere else other than Melbourne.

The fact the Tigers are about to miss out on a ninth straight finals has not fazed Grant.

Talk of Maguire being too hard on his players - to the point he left some "walking on eggshells" - was never going to trouble Grant given he came from the Storm and their own notoriously tough taskmaster Craig Bellamy.

Like all players involved in the Melbourne system, Grant is resilient and always ready to roll up the sleeves.

Grant quipped to the Herald earlier this year he was given an almighty spray by Bellamy after he took a dummy pass during Johnathan Thurston and Smith's testimonial game - when no competition points were at stake - but was yet to cop one from Maguire.

Once the Tigers were out of contention, the easy option for Maguire would have been to rest Grant and blood some youngsters who were definitely signed for 2021 and beyond.

But the Tigers are still paying Grant's wage, have immense respect for his ability and appreciated the way he worked overtime on his recovery from a knee injury to return a week ahead of schedule.

Apart from winger David Nofoaluma, Grant has been the club's standout.

A beach lover who grew up in Yeppoon, in central Queensland, and who spent his share of time in Port Macquarie, on the NSW mid north coast, Grant has been happily commuting from south of Wollongong to Concord most days.

The Tigers this week confirmed Benji Marshall would finish up at the end of the season. Maguire said on Friday it was a tough decision. It was a messy process with Marshall admitting he only learned of the club's plans via a Herald report.

Maguire, however, has the full backing of the Tigers board who appreciate his methods are the only way the club can end a long era of mediocrity.

Speaking to the Herald about Grant before last weekend's Panthers clash, Maguire said: "I've just loved Harry's professionalism with everything he does. He's a guy who does what's needed to be at his best for 80 minutes, and he's someone who is always looking to improve. That's why he works so hard."

Smith has not revealed what his plans are for 2021, with coach Craig Bellamy on Thursday admitting he could eventually make a brilliant representative coach.

WT are one of the biggest money earners for news outlets. We (the fans) fall into their tricks hook, line and sinker. Every time.

Can't get over how good Harry is.

The amount of tough carries he took tonight and his involvement is just insane. Literally everywhere in every game for however long he's out there.

Said it before, but I'm a fan for life wherever this kid goes.

If Smith plays on...Harry becomes a free agent.

But, he also probably gets 700 plus offers. Honesty, from what we have seen and given his age etc...700-800 would def be the type of offer he would get. He is EXACTLY the player we need...the Dogs need...the Cows also...and the Broncs...

Not sure I agree giving him so many minutes the remainder of the year, but nice to try finish the year with some positivity I guess even though he won't be with us 👍
