Harry interested in buying Wests Tigers

He's 82, what the heck is he saying!!! he makes no sense. Why has he waited so long if he's supposedly such a passionate supporter?

He's still a businessman.

"Buy Low, Sell High"

That's why he's been waiting.

Ding ding ding!

I'll get excited when it happens. It could all just be bluster.

I really hope that HT and WT find a way to make this happen, it would transform the club for the better.

I had to read the article 2 or 3 times to actually understand what was being said. These have to be some of the most bizarre quotes:

"I have to adopt everyone, all the children are equal."

"How will I make money out of it? I sell to the Chinese. You think the Chinese care about rugby league,"

"First, let's see how I can be convinced that I have found a way for them to play and win."

Despite these confusing quotes, it feels to me that something has gone wrong from Triguboff' perspective and this quote says it all, "Officially, they have a new sponsor, I'm out of it. Unofficially, I'm trying to find a way [in]." We then have all these wierd quotes centred around him buying the club ooutright. Further, the comments about Concord Oval seem a bit out of touch given the state government and NRL's direction on stadia.

Yea I find the whole thing bizarre. Not only does he have to buy out Balmains share but he has to convince Wests Ashfield to sell their share. Its like he is showing everyone he is doing everything he can to help the club while actually doing nothing as he knows it won't really happen. As I said earlier if he wants to help immediately put up some hefty TPAs to get the club back on track.

Can't see it happening anytime soon. And there has to be concerns what happens after he goes - that could be this year or in another 10-15 years.
I think best outcomes in near future is HT getting behind a few TPAs

Not his own money…Meritons money and 100 percent tax deductible let's keep things in perspective, his company had been generous.

Will believe it when I see it.

For the record - he won't be providing TPAs. Given his long association with WT, there's no way the NRL would view Meriton as a separate, independent entity.

I agree Gary, there are a few obscure comments. But I think some of those are just down to Harry never getting a full grasp on English over the years.

I'm all for this. The bloke has passion, business nous and ownership would be almost pocket change to him.

Harry is probably getting to the point where he wants to leave a legacy and this is probably a great way to do it. This might sound really cold, but due to his age, the key component of the deal would be the succession plan.

I think give Harry ownership and keep Wests and Balmain involved somehow. If anything bad happens to HT, ownership gets donated back to the clubs in the structure we have now. Pretty much like the Knights and Tinkler.

It comes at a funny time though. I'm actually quite happy where the club is headed. Harry is almost a year too late. Everyone would have been clambering over him if this was proposed before the restructure.

His personal income is derived from the business. So even with a 30% corporate tax haircut, it's a lot of money.

Bloody hell, i reckon a few people on here would bad mouth santa. The guy has tipped more money into the club than just about anyone.

For all the bad publicity Tinklers ownership of the knights got the club is far better off financially than they were before he was there. If Harry was to purchase the club it would just be a matter of putting the correct fail safes in place.

Its a no for me …...... I think we will manage Ok without him.

Happy for him to stay on as a sponsor but not to be in a position to control the whole organisation.

I might be wrong but I doubt that very much

The Tigers Run at a loss, dont they?

His sponsorship dealings with the Tigers could be underpinned as "losses" by the ATO.

I'm sure he has a creative team of accountants that would ensure something like this.

Has anyone seen Harry @ a game?

Yes I've seen him, he used to drive his Bentley down to Leichhardt.

My opinion, I'll put this way: without a wealthy backer, we are going to continue to be a side struggling for funds = struggling for coaching, facilities, players, rehab etc. There are 16 teams competing for the current NRL pie; no matter how well the NRL does and how much money they distribute evenly to the other teams, we will always be behind advantaged clubs like Broncos who can add in their own positive business.

Privatisation is somewhat risky, but we are one of the poorest clubs around, so really how much worse off could we be? NRL will always save the franchise if it doesn't end well, that is guaranteed.

But Harry T isn't some new millionaire, the bloke is loaded to the tits. Rusty and Tinkler were backing clubs with millions - we are talking billions here, so whilst Uncle Harry isn't going to squander his wealth on us, he is an incredibly stable backer, for as long as he wants to keep it up.

And even if Harry can only do this for a few years, it would be a leg up for the team - I'd rather have a few years of good business and funding to build on, rather than the scraps we have now.

Why is Uncle Harry doing this now? Maybe he's thinking about retiring somewhat. Maybe he feels his mortality and wants to see the club do well with his remaining time. Maybe he's gotten to the point where he has enough money to spend some of it on fun like rugby league. Maybe he sees the writing on the wall for Balmain and reckons this is the right time to swoop the whole JV up.

Doesn't matter if Harry was an old Balmain supporter, he only started sponsoring Balmain in 1998, and he would have less political bias than the current Wests / Balmain partners. Would do great things for a single club image and mentality.

Why even question someone who has thrown millions at the club he obviously loves?
He could always have spent it somewhere else and 'saved some tax'.
Geez - some people see an agenda behind everything
