Jarryd Hayne will be a notable no-show at the start of Parramatta preseason training on Thursday, as the two-time Dally M Medalist trains solo in preparation for the 2019 NRL season.
The reigning wooden-spooners return to training early along with three other NRL clubs and are struggling to put together an attractive offer to keep Hayne at the club, with the ex-NFL star reportedly asking for an upgrade to his contract in the vicinity of $700,000 a season.
Parramatta is looking to move players around to have enough money in the salary cap to give Hayne the money he wants.
Eels coach Brad Arthur confirmed Hayne won’t be present at the start of preseason training but still expressed a desire to have the ex-NFL star in his squad.
“He is not contracted so he won’t be there (for the first day of training),” Arthur told News Corp. “Obviously we want him at the club. He wants to be here. It is just about working things out.”“He is not going to play for $100,000,” he added. “It is just making sure what works for him works for us. I hope (he stays) but I don’t know. Honestly, I have no idea.
“He knows what he needs to do to get his body right.
“We don’t want it to go too long because then it does start to become a problem. We need to know one way or another pretty soon.”
Veteran centre Michael Jennings is said to be one of the players the club is trying to offload in a bid to keep Hayne.
