Heath Mason #288

Got some talent but not ready and I don't think he's a fullback. 6, 9 or 14 IMO. Hope he spends the year in NSW cup next year.

Not sure who plays 1 in NSW Cup next year. Latu at 7 and Mason at 6 could be good though.

At 13 you think? Or ahead of Da Silva at 14? Only places I can see him if Galvin and Luai are both fit.

Yea I think he will play off the bench at lock.
I don't think Benji will play 2 specialists hookers, so poor old Api will have to shoulder a lot of work.

Although, Latu coming on at lock is a middle, so I guess it's not crazy to have 2 front rowers, Latu as a lock (and halves cover) and TDS to interchange with Api. Bird starting at lock gives us cover outwide with injuries.

Really, if you have two 80 minute backrowers, you can definitely play that bench. Imagine the thrust through the middle bringing on Latu, TDS and Hunt at the same time against tiring forwards.

4 front rowers in the 17 is more than enough, so now that I think about it, I like having both Latu and TDS on the bench. With Bird in the team, we have everything covered.

That’s probably true…but he does have that zip to get past them and I think he can handle being hit. He isn’t afraid to tackle either. Don’t know….he may end up being a good player we reluctantly let go who thrives elsewhere.
If he can gain the confidence of catching the bombs in traffic everyone's opinion would change.
Will he get that confidence who knows? Can it be coached, I don't know?
He has been letting them bounce while in lower grades. If they come straight to him, not a problem.
If he has to run to catch them in traffic, they bounce.

Some need and go and meet Heath great young man, who loves the club through and through, will be a good utility player for us in time. But like a lot of other young players this year was not helped by poor coaching. Needs to hit the gym and running track.

I'd pick between da Silva and Api for hooker and play mason at 14 to relieve at hooker and play the utility role. I don't like carrying a hooker on the bench who can't play well elsewhere. And Mason could also be brought in to play a papenhouzen like lock role that he did at the start of his career. Feel like mason could be someone who adds spark and X factor when you need something to happen.

All that depends on having a competitive forward pack which also enables Latu at 13. Perhaps wishful thinking.

But I think mason is as promising as any of our young bunch this year (behind Galvin of course).

I would say that is a confidence issue,
I’m guessing when the bomb goes up he is praying that it’s the wingers ball or anyone’s but his.
If he is our 2nd choice fullback he needs time in reserve grade being told to attempt to catch every bomb not to let it bounce, we don’t care how many you knock on as long as he is attempting to catch them.
Will find out one way or another if he is to be our number 2 fullback or not.

Probably what should happen…
Bird can offer great utility value and fill in at hooker if required…
My concern is, we’ll play bird and have another utility on the bench…
We’re just that dumb!!

Reality is, if we were a better team - Api wouldn’t need a rest so much and one utility could cover us. Tallyn being a specialist hooker is going to make it hard to get him into the game and having our bench 100% effective.

Hopefully whatever they do, works…
Hard to back them at this point though
