Heath Mason #288

I wouldn't be re-signing Heath and I'd let him go this year if it creates space to bring in a back up 9 or a centre.

I think he's a career fringe first grade utility but we already have enough small backs and he has so much work to do defensively.

They got 22 spots filled next season… given rumoured lack of cap space … they will probably need to end up retaining a couple of Mason, Sukkar, Murray and Saukuru on minimum deals …

Poor old Hope is a bridge too far …

Nothing wrong with keeping Murray. I'm a big fan

Exactly. And his development has been handled so poorly so far. Go through team lists in his games at NRL and NSW Cup over the years, and he's all over the place. Fullback, half, centre, bench utility. Not doing the kid any favours at all. Like Latu, it's to the detriment of the player and the team.

Club has to set his position based on his skill set, physical attributes, and roster depth, then train and play him in that position.

From the training sessions I've seen, Attard was the team 2 fullback in pre-season, and Mason was playing through the middle as roving/pushing 13. He looked great. In the early rounds, he shifted to the centres for team 2. However, I haven't sighted Attard at NRL training in recent times, and Mason is now the team 1's fullback with Bula out!

Can folks not see the issues here? I'm not saying he has to be in the NRL team. Actually, the complete opposite. He seems to have been inadequately prepared by the club for NRL.
Best statement anyone can make about our developing players

Dude, according to three-quarters of the forum a month ago, he had to be the 6 partnering Doueihi!
To be fair on Madden before all the injuries plagued the team he was playing well with the full-strength side around him even without Luai.

Has looked ordinary with the horrific injury toll but so has Luai and most of the side, harsh judging on latest performances.

After watching the warriors play well without either their starting 7 or back up, it seems to me that a good team will play well regardless of their halfback. It's not just on the halves, everyone has to play well. Of all the players out, Samuela feels like the biggest miss. His defence is so good in all facets, and he does other little things like kick chase and scramble really well.

Mason is so completely ineffective in every aspect of rugby league

He runs around catches, passes, runs, kicks and does all the things a rugby league player should do however does absolutely nothing to positively impact the game. Coaches gauge player performance by each individual play involvement they have and judge if it was negative, nuetral or positive. He NEVER has a positive impact on ANY play and never has. It's all nuetral any negative. (Makasini is similar)

Needs two years in Reggies to build his game to MAYBE get a shot at being a footballer
So not ready for first grade

I agree. Tried hard & good character but is not it. I hope that a couple of exceptional NSW Cup games does not get him a contract extension & potentially affect the futures of Attard & Brookes.

If the choice is Mason or Andrew’s as the 18/19 th man I’m going with Andrew’s
He has ‘something’, whereas mason has a step that beats no one and rarely passes or creates anything.
Prefer Andrew’s to get Reggie’s experience but not if it means mason is picked in the NRL team

Has a crack and seems a nice lad.
Hard to ignore the obvious though.

Can't really see him getting picked up by any other clubs... wonder what next year looks like for him, employment wise.

Feel sorry for him but he’s not a first grader. Falls into that unfortunate category of being a jack of all trades, master of none.

Too many deficiencies in his game to really be a regular first grader and they far outweigh any strengths he has.
Can never understand the Tigers fascination for undersized midgets, if he was lightning fast well OK but he's not.

Add to the fact that in 1st grade nothing happens around Mason's input why do they persist.

One of the Tigers short comings they need to put to bed.

Agreed.

Our pathways don’t ever nurture those kids who are athletic, explosive, and sizeable.

Probably why it’s been forever since we’ve developed good edge forwards and outside backs.

Our history proves we lack in this area this fundamental of the game.

Most other teams get this right, look for big/powerful and fast players, it's not a rocket fuel formula for gods sake.

Makasini fits the prototype, but he is still only 18y.o and after some good trial form I think we all got a bit carried away thinking he could be our instant saviour.

I think Mason is partly a victim of folllwing advice to put on plenty of size tj what was not so long ago a slight frame, but lightning quick,
He has bulked up quite a lot and has no doubt lost a fair bit of speed because of it.

It's silly to expect too much from a boy's 1st season, big future yes but not a man's body yet.

Watched KOE today on fox, Saukuru looks the part also but he needs to be fitter his stamina wouldn't stand up in 1st grade.
