Hooker situation

We have 2 good hookers .... end of story!

Agreed.

Its pretty obvious who Maguire will select in the 9 Round 1 but anyone talking up one of these guys at the expense of the other needs to have a good look at themselves.

Imo we need to have then swap, cause there different playstyles can muck up opposition defence

Maybe we can do what webdid with grant and make simpkin go into lock and liddle 9

Yeah I think we have liddle on for 50 odd mins and then simpkins or even other way around but both have to be in the starting 17. With the speed on the game It's a really good idea to have 2 hookers. Neither are 80min players either. It frustrated me last year watching grant burn out after 50mins and have very little impact. I would rather have given him 1st have and then 10-15 to finish the game fresh. I'm just happy we finally have players who are genuinely that position for ones

One things for sure, Liddle will have to play a good standard of footy to keep young Simpkin out, looks every bit a long term NRL player.

Did Liddle play a full 80 on Sunday?

Liddle played the first half, Simpkin played the second.

And so does Liddle.

Exact point of my last post.

If I’m honest, I think Liddle is a bit of a worry defensively and I wouldn’t call him a tough player. Happy to be proven wrong by him though. I just think Simpkin will win the job.

If Mbye is fullback you can have Simpkin at 14, if Laurie is fullback Mbye's versatility and salary makes more sense at 14.
If I was Madge I would have Liddle at 9 with Mbye on the bench, then have Simpkin at 9 with Mbye on the bench every 3rd or 4th game. We want to develop them both and hooker makes a lot of tackles so resting them makes sense.

I’m of the same opinion.
Simpkin has been signed for 2022
Liddle only 2021
Interesting times ahead .

I'd prefer Simpkin off the bench from round 1 but this may work. I think Simpkin is a better hooker than Mbye. So we only really gain playing Mbye as a utility if we lose an outside back or spine player other than hooker.

I thought he made some big tackles on the line. He was great in defence IMHO.

His defence impressed me. At one point yesterday, we were defending our goal line and he made 3 or 4 tackles in the one set, including 3 back to back. He then still had energy to get to dummy half when we got the ball back. Good signs.

He looked knackered at the end of 40, though. Was probably going extra hard, knowing he was off at half time.

Cant say I seen him miss one yesterday but he was in the middle for the second half of last year when our D was atrocious.

Made more tackles than anyone yesterday. His defence is superb.

Mbye is a competent 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, is not the worst 9 and can kick goals. Madge has to weigh up covering an injury with Mbye vs 80min of have a good fresh hooker on the field with Simpkin on the bench.

An excellent problem to have.

I'm personally an unabashed Liddle fan. I've said before that if he remains injury free and gets cracking, he will be the most exciting player coming on for the Tigers since Tedesco. If he lives up to his potential, he will push for Origin selection within a few years.

Having said that, injury and 'potential' could mean anything.

With Simpkin, we possibly have every bit as good a hooker pairing as Harry & hectic cheese.

Im also a huge Liddle fan. We still haven't gone close to seeing the best of him.

In the lowers he was doing 50 tackles plus a game and making breaks left right and centre.

But..... I have to admit that this Simpkin kid look really, really good, and If I'm being honest has outpointed Liddle in the two trials.

IMO his passes are a little crisper and he is taking the line on a bit more and looking damaging.

Defense wise you cant fault either, LIddle especially on the wknd was off tap good but Simpkin looks a good defender too.

Interesting how this all pans out but I have Simpkin just in front.
