How Does the NRL Cap Operate?

With the Wests Tigers recently offloading a number of handy players and not replenishing their player stocks it would appear that the club may (hopefully) have something like $1 million of 2015 cap space remaining. If the club decides to hold onto all of this 2015 surplus cap money until 2016 can it be added onto the cap money which would be provided for 2016 for spending on new players in 2016?

No…surpluses can not be carried forward...

NRL PAYMENTS FOR THE TOP 25
$5.5 million - Basic payments for the Top 25 players including Sponsor Servicing Allowance ($5.3m) which is automatically given to all clubs to compensate players for club sponsorship activities including appearances and endorsements.
Long Serving Player Allowance ($200K) for eligible players who have played eight continuous years of grade football with that club including Holden Cup and NSW Cup.
>
+ $231,250 - Paid by the NRL to the RLPA towards players' Retirement Account Contribution.
>
+ $100,000 - Paid by the NRL to the RLPA towards their administration funding.
>
*Payments under the actual salary cap total $5.50 million paid directly by clubs across the Top 25 players. The additional $331,250 paid into the RLPA Retirement and Administration Fund Contribution is not defined as a salary cap payment.
>
What players can earn outside the salary cap:
>
$600,000 - Marquee Player Allowance - any or all of the Top 25 players at each club can share in payments made by club sponsors seeking to use a player's intellectual property. These may be guaranteed in the playing contract by clubs.
$100,000 - Motor Vehicle Allowance – a maximum amount of five motor vehicles may be provided to players in the Top 25 outside of the salary cap. (Valued at $20,000 each).
>
Unlimited - Players can earn unlimited amounts from corporate sponsors who are not associated with the club and who do not use the game's intellectual property (no club logos, jerseys or emblems) provided these are pre-approved. These agreements may not be negotiated by the club as an incentive for a player to sign a contract, nor can they be guaranteed by the club.
>
Unlimited - Tertiary education fees, approved traineeships, medical insurance costs, relocation/temporary accommodation costs are not included in the cap but must be approved.
>
Payments for players outside Top 25
$440,000 - Cap for all players outside of the top 25 who compete in the Telstra Premiership.

My sources are mostly other hacks on the internet but I believe, the Roosters were able to underspend in earlier years to have some of their current squad on the payroll before they'd even arrived. I think underspending in 2012 was key to their 2013 success.

Hopefully someone can clarify this one for me.

If CAP surpluses can not be carried forward it would appear logical that Wests Tigers would spend any surplus they have and buy a new player for 2015\. Or am I being illogical?

The paid Maloney some of his 2013 contract money from their 2012 Cap whist he was still at the Warriors….a loophole which has since been closed I believe Cos...

This supposedly helped in getting $BW and Jennings in 2013

You can't use surplus money in following years. I do however believe it is still possible to top up a players contract using the surplus so you then can pay him less in following years, allowing you to free up money in next years cap. Though I may be wrong and the NRL changed this.

Having Penrith pay a fair chunk of Jennings' remaining contract would have helped too. Why can't we have smart accountants like the Roosters?

it is naive to think that it is clever accounting

The Salary Cap works differently for different clubs

In our case it doesn't work at all We pay overs for players and struggle to find TPA's

Question for all

One of Braith's TPA's would be Fox Sports , can you have multiple TPA's ??

You just skim through stuff sometimes don't you…

I read it meant it was unlimited $$$'s not unlimited sponsors

Having unlimited sponsors would be madness , that doesn't make sense Geo

Looks pretty clever to me. They're the ones holding up a trophy with a squad no one else could afford.

You can have as many TPA's as your management can organise….

Eg Mark Gasnier...http://www.theaustralian.com.au/archive/news/gasnier-claims-contract-forced-him-out/story-e6frg7mo-1111116919049

“Some third party agreements came through for him and eventuated, some didn't but if there was a firm agreement, there would be no reason to have an annual escape clause which was agreed between the player and the club.”

All you need is $300,000 from your league club slipped under the table, have a rick mining magnet like Ken Talbot pay all your teams players some extra cash and then your club is way under the cap.
When you get caught just slip the money back to the League club the day before they get audited.
Then get your football manager to resign and keep his mouth shut.
Other then that pay the players $250,000 per year as a runnier after they retire, ar la Lewis at the gummies.
See it's easy!!!!!!!!!!!!
