How to beat Manly

How do we do it?

Penrith had a red-hot go today and had a massive penalty count going their way and couldn't break them down.

We need a team stacked with forwards (ie, no two backs on the bench… if Utai is there at least he can cover 2nd row) and our kicking game needs to be on song.

I am confident Lawry can handle Lyon and Aysh can cover Matai, but we need some big boppers to help Lui and Marshall out when their big blokes are running at them.

The next two weeks are huge. Win and everyone will be taking notice. Lose and we will be out of the 8 and in serious trouble of missing the finals altogether.

Go Tigers! :sign:

yeah, our bench was miserable viewing on paper.

we'll need to make some hard choices this week.

payten, Utai, Woods, and dare i say it, Fifita - as a minimum.

Completions and defence. If we play like we did against the Roosters and throw a bit more at the Eagles when we are attacking, think we can cause a boilover. Need to attack Matai's side and get under his skin.
Looking forward to the Ayshford v Matai battle

Dominate possession, turn manly around constantly, play as much as possible in their half, complete sets, attitude in defence- all WTs players will have to be committed in defence. Then, once Manly are buggered, turn on the razzle dazzle- plan A. Plan B big stink in the first scrum, manly won't expect that from WTs and will be unsettled unless it back fires- forget plan B :unamused:

Hey cunno, I think if we started a blue with Manly we'd get our arses kicked.

The team has been concentrating on completing their sets for the past two games and as a result turned two pretty ordinary efforts into wins. This has been in preparatiuon for these games coming up.

Lui MUST have help in defense as his technique and attitude is hopeless. He will be the target for sure.

No running across field, the attack must be straightened. Manly just love hunting and smashing side ways runners. Quick play the balls and straight, direct attack can punch holes in their defense.

Scores more points than them.?

That'll be a good start .As for tactics we need to keep it close as possible as long as possible .
Lui and Marshalls defence will be critical . I still think Manly are beatable .
Work B.Stewart around and test his hammy . Turn them inside out in the forwards with a lot of inside plays early . Really attack Lyons he can make mistakes defensively and give their halves no room to work with and make sure they end up on their butts every time they touch the ball .
80% plus percent completions
I still think they are vulnerable late in games fitness wise
Won't be easy but we can win .

I think you are right Stryker about plan B, but it would be great to see sauce let loose!!

Maybe we can turn back time for about 35 years and have a mixture of Wests and Balmain forwards for the first scrum . Blocker , Benny , Dallas Donnelly , Les Boyd , Sironen and Junior . Don't think we 'd lose that fight . :roll

Patience, controlled aggression, deep kicks and repeat sets when we get the opportunity which means great kick chase. Discipline will play a big role. We have to get up in their faces but don't go giving easy meters with penalties. We need to knock Manly over to really get some strong belief and confidence that we are strting to become a serious contender and are capable of beating a top 3 team.

Spot on Cunno.

With the completion of sets in the Cowboys and Roosters games it looks like they're building towards Manly and St George. I'd be running with a bench full of forwards with Utai as the 2nd rower/back on bench. I reckon it'd be a good game to give young Groat a run also. Looks very mature and composed and I don't think he will become flustered too easily.

14\. Utai
15\. Woods
16\. Payten
17\. Groat

Love that bench! :sign:

If we turn up to play we can beat them, they didnt play that well yesterday, though they still won, its better for us that they won anyhow. I agree we need 4 forwards on the bench though and no backs.

Looking at the way we have played the last two weeks, the opposition had little to do with how the games were played… It was all Sheens getting the boys ready for the next 2 weeks. We will beat Manly if we play exactly how we have played the last 2 weeks. Our defence will hold them and if the opportunity is there, we can score twice as many points.

Take the early odds, Wests Tigers by 8!!!

You beat Manly with your defence. They have not changed the way they attack in years. Still the same second man plays well before the defensive line hoping for someone to make an error.

Foran and Watmough (if he plays) are the dangers as they have a random element to their game. Run at Foran all night and hold your defensive line with no over zealous running out of the line.

The halfback with the stupid name is not first grade quality.

I think Manly are very beatable …..... Lyon and Stewart are their main strike players ....... shut those two down and you'll at least minismise the number of points they score.

I think our forwards will more than be a match for them ....... plus we will be underdogs ..... I like it when people write us off/concede defeat ........ thats usually when we come good.

I'm quietly confident on Friday night

Yes.
Penrith tried going wide with the long airy passes, Manly read it easily.
I think we need fast men up the middle, lots of short sharp passes up direct through the ruck
