I Guess That's Why Tom Waterhouse Doesn't Know What I Want

Unfortunately its not just him and channel 9 - I was listening to 2gb and they had a few updates before the game.

Not so bad - but its everywhere.

Although Waterhouse seems like a top scum bag and his business model is based on high subscribers - hence the cash he put in to get such a prominent amount of air-time. From what i read he outbidded the other organisations by a massive margin.

I see Waterhouse as a very astute businessman who is enjoying remarkable success at the moment. Its funny to me that the hatred directed towards him has magnified since word got out that his operation has been valued at the half a billion dollar mark. I dont see how he is a prostitue.

That said I dont like seeing him throughout the rugby league coverage either. I didnt like seeing Munsie as well. However he has paid a considerable amount of money for that priveledge and if people are that upset about it, they should blame the real culprits…The NRL and Chanel 9.

I thought it was hilarious he was quoting odds for the City vs Country at halftime, instead of the Australia vs New Zealand…

Hatred intensified when he started showing up on NRL coverage and pretending to be a commentator.

I doubt many people actually know the market worth of his business interests, and even less would use that as a reason to arc up about him.

Yeah it did but he didnt invent this concept. He just paid for the right. Again, those in charge should have predicted the publics potential dislike of this. They are the ones who gave a bookie a segment to critically analyse the game in real time. Very poor foresight from those in control.

Dont be so sure about that. It was widely reported and with society's ever growing addiction to celebrity, a young, good looking, successful bloke is always going to attract interest.

He has certainly misread the public on this one but even more so has the NRL.

I've said before, that unless Nine and bookies control themselves and show restraint, they will end up generating enough hate and ill will that the government will look to capitalise and step in.

This isn't going to be a popular opinion but I think when you're paying $10 million a year its fair enough to get some pretty high exposure.
He needs to work on his presenting skills though.

nothing to do with present or whether he deserves 10 million. So if i rock up with 100million i should be allowed to just have half the screen covered with odds and adds for gambling? HELL NO. theyve just gone overboard with betting. Didnt mind glen munsie with a half time update of odds and in an evening maybe 2 tab ads. but waterhouse is just shoving em down our throats with his commentating, his odd updates and repetitive ads

I am not sure that he really knows what the punters want. They actually want to get back the money which they have already lost to him.

I had no idea what his worth is when I posted. It irks me that he weasels his way into the footy coverage as a 'commentator' with the single sim of taking people's hard earned cash. You only need to know one person badly affected by gambling to feel repulsed.

We put him there. Well not in a direct way, but while he pays ch9 for his place, ch9 pays the NRL for media rights, which in turn goes towards the clubs, which in turn keeps players paid highly and in the NRL.

Do you really think CH9 could get this sort of money from any other sponsor - not a chance in hell? If the public wasn't betting, he would not of paid $50mil for the rights. You can't blame the guy for trying to get his moneys worth of coverage and in turn lining his pockets with gold. If you had the same opportunity you'd be kidding yourself if you didn't take it.

While there is money in sport gambling, this sort of thing will always be happening. Look at horse racing. Wouldnt be around at all if it wasn't for the punt. All sport is going this way. like it or not.

Unlike horse racing, Rugby League definitely does not need gambling for its existence. Every race club in Australia employs a host of stewards to ensure that everything associated with gambling is above board. Do we want Rugby League to go that way?

@Newtown, so where else do you plan on raising the revenue to keep the players playing NRL? Bums on seats and over priced hot dogs & beer isn't paying for it.

You are right more revenue from gambling equals higher payments for players and cheaper hot dogs and beer. I am not sure however about the more bums on seats.
