Has anyone ever asked…why us? Why does it have to be the team that we support that has become the basket case of the NRL for all these years on end, going from bad to worse with every new season? Why Wests Tigers, why couldn’t it be some other team instead?
I feel your pain
@Flippedy. However, I think, for once, that the rebuild is being done with a strategic approach, and, although the wins aren't on the board, the change in direction is evident for all to see. There have been mistakes for sure: Sheens as coach wasn't the brightest decision; not developing the basics before trying to dazzle with brilliance, and our AZAC Day jumper fiasco are good examples.
BUT
They did make a strategic decision to fix the forward pack first, and in my opinion rightly so, and went about developing a well balanced pack. We now get over the advantage line, offload, are able to kick from positions of advantage and there is a but of mongrel in the team (I want more but will settle with what we have for now)
I expect keeping Brooks over Hastings was a deliberate decision based on a combination of balancing the cap and the belief that Brooks would perform behind a good pack of forwards. Decision was proven wrong - can't change it - jog on. They also banked on AD being a capable 5/8 after an a full off season to prepare. I think both decisions were known, but acceptable risks. With hindsight I doubt that the Brooks decision would change simply because of the chunk of cap that we would have been up for to subsidise his contract. I don't think anyone could have predicted how badly AD would perform; plenty on this site had him earmarked as the saviour of the club over the off season so I guess not all blame lies at the feet of Sheens and Benji.
2023 was always going to be a development year and we all thought, as I am sure Sheens did, that the backline would be average. I don't think anyone believed that it would be so poor in attack in the oppositions 25. Not much we can do now but plan for 2024.
It definitely sucks to support a team doesn't have the necessary skill set to compete; however, for the first time in a long while I think we are on the right track. Sure we missed Munster and the dick from Parra, but it shows that Sheens and Co. know what we need next. If we buy a decent half and 5/8, a strike centre and upgrade a couple of plodders at the end of their contracts 2024 doesn't look so bad.
I know it doesn't address the right here, right now, problem; but, it does give me confidence that we are taking a deliberate approach to build a team that will be competitive. Staines, Tupou and AJ aren't the foundation to build our backline from but they will become good support players with a change of halves and a strike centre. If a quality fullback was to jump out of the woodwork we should take them too; but, I think Charlie has potential so am prepared to wait until later in the year before making that call.
The rest of the season isn't going to be pretty but there is light at the end of the tunnel and for once I don't think it is a train coming in the other direction. If we could land a young up and coming half in the near future I think we could accelerate our growth.
Cheers n Beers
