I remember it being awesome...

Drawing inspiration from @Tiger_heart's excellent thread about tv series before Netflix, I thought it might be fun to hear anyone/everyone's experience with movies, tv or music...

I have this belief that when you watch or listen to something as an adult (or just a very long time since you first saw or heard it), everything is either REALLY bad or surprisingly still REALLY good.

Obviously, I'm not talking cartoons you loved when you were 4 years old! 🤣

One I had not too long ago was a movie...

I remember going to the cinema with my parents and sister to see the remake of Cape Feare (Robert DeNiro, Nick Nolte) and just loving it.

So a few months back I watched it, and it was like I was watching a completely different movie.

It was REALLY good!

But not good how I first liked it. When I saw it as a kid it was an edge of your seat thriller.

But for me now it was all about the style it was made, the perfect overacting that made it feel like it was made when that was how they were acted. The slightly over dramatic shots and edits.

Anyway, curious to read others' experiences with this, so if you think it'd be fun to share please do! 😊

Im not a huge Star Wars fan - seen the original maybe once in the past 30 years...
I have always held a fondness though for the story and remember it being a great adventure as a child.
Talked my kids into watching it a few months back on a rainy day when they were carrying on about nothing to do etc...we all sat down and watched it together.
They were bored shitless. Both left the loungeroom at about the hour mark with me telling them "it gets better, youll miss out". I made it to the end and turned it off really confused.
Its a terrible movie, with some decent effects. The direction is awful and the acting is abysmal. The set pieces arent what I remember either. The light sabers look silly and incredibly fake. The fighter attack scene at the end is genuine B movie stuff.

I remember Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi being good but Im afraid to confirm that now...I think I may end up hating them as well lol.

What about if it was the kids? Attention span. Not you. Star Wars was cool. But it ain't Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Have you seen Star Wars lately? I dont think some movies from our childhood are standing the test of time like those from our parents generation have.

The messages are different. LOTR - gold and greed is good - Star Wars - good V evil. Look.at the messaging. The subliminal. We can have better days. If we know what's rewl and what is not.

Lord of the Rings has held up so much better than that middle Star Wars trilogy (which was released at a similar time).

LOTR was so ahead of its time.
Yeah...Its a better story but I dont like the films much either to be honest.
Theres A LOT of male characters crying. Way too much. Its very soppy.
Also, correct me if Im wrong, but theres heaps of battles against massive armies controlled by magic and only one main character dies from the original party. All the weak characters make it through....At least 3 of the Hobbits should have died, including the main one. The humans should have died too.
I was expecting a darker take from the bloke who made Meet the Feebles, Braindead and Bad Taste.

Dont stress. Humans will be dying according to WEF. There are 2 many of us. Not only is thst feeble, but brain-dead and very bad taste. I mean - who sanctions the films?

Did you ever watch the original with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum?
If not you should really give it a watch.

Could have been darker, but it was designed to be a blockbuster movie for a broad audience. The scale of the battles, adventure and world building was what was appealing and had not been done before. It stands up so well today. Fair point a few of the main characters could have died off.

As far as male characters crying, life is a lot of different shades. Embrace the full spectrum of emotions

Love it. Embrace it all - otherwise how will our kids learn. Better Days.
