One can assume that one of the main reasons Todd Carney signed with Cronulla and not Penrith is that Cronulla is perceived to be a much better place to live. On a number of occasions Penrith have struggled to attract players because of its location.

Do you think this would be the case with signing payers if we based ourselves at Cambo?

Would players like travel or live in Cambo rather than the centralised Concord Oval?

Probably one of many little things that add up to players making their decisions. A winning club, a senior coach, the chance of winning the GF, … are all probably bigger factors. We're not ticking too many boxes at the moment.

That's actually a very good question.

I wouldn't know how to answer it however. You are dealing with young men, usually single with no children, earning very good salaries. Quite different to my life and I imagine my priorities would be very different to these guys. Maybe WT needs to conduct a discrete survey before considering such a move.

It depends on the setting the player has in mind, city or country. If the purpose of this thread is to just throw mud at Cambo, asking who'd want to live in areas like Claymore or Airds i'd suggest he be a bit more thorough with his research as the areas mentioned in my previous post are all up market

If I was a young country kid and a little overall ed by big city life,Cambo would not be a bad place to play out of,live in the Southern Highlands and commute to work.

Although I do concede that teams like Manly have always been able to attract players partly due to a perceived sea change life style.Teams like the Raiders have always had to pay overs due to their location, although the Storm never have any trouble getting players to up root to Melbourne.

I suppose the bottom line, if most of our team are coming through the junior system and are from the South West, it would make sense to base the team out a Cambo so they are close to family and friends

Campbelltown is 40-45 minutes(51 kms) to the CBD???? Any one heard of the M5.Same distance To Wollongong. It's not like Canberra.I think a winning culture and vision would have a lot more to do with it than location.

Carney probably realised if he played up at Panthers Leagues the bouncers would probably bash him to death.

If I was a player, on a good income, Campbeltown would be right at the bottom of the list of places I'd want to live to be honest. Probably below Penrith. Controversially I'll start a debate here, but lets face it, it doesn't have the greatest reputation and there are much more reputable cities/towns to live in imo. So if I had the choice between leichardt and Campbeltown. its a no brainer. Leichardt no questions.

I know if I was an NRL player who had my pick of clubs, lifestyle and location would have a massive impact on where I decided to play.

It all depends on what you're after. Some players (presumably the older ones,) will take lifestyle into account as a few of them would have families and such, whereas other players may just as well be happy playing for the club that gave them a start or that they followed as a child. Again, other players may suck it up and play/live somewhere they can't stand because they only have 10-15 years to ply their trade and want to maximise their earnings out of the game.

Sydney is really a different kettle of fish though, it really is the only place in the NRL where you can live where you wish to be and play for a team out of the area (excepting maybe Gold Coast/Brisbane.) I imagine plenty of players commute from outside their area to play for their club.

And bankstown is 20 mins from cronulla. Not quiet the same thing..
