No one will care about SOO. Marketing strategy.

Bring on Friday night.

There are people that get Origin. And there are people like you.

I am devastated, as I was devastated the last 7 years.

This is no marketing strategy. This is what League is all about.

I did get origin, but perhaps in my old age, my views have changed. Don't get me wrong, it is a great game to watch, but the result is inconsequential. It means nothing.

Origin is just a money spinner for the NRL (or is it the ARL?) and an advertising campaign. Origin shows the game at its highest level and intensity and is the best tool of attracting new fans to the game. Why is it such a great game? Because the constraints of the salary cap has been removed.

There is one constraint and that is players should only be selected on the basis of playing senior football in either Qld or NSW. The concept was founded in the late 70's and it was a genuine clash between NSWRL and QRL. Unfortunately, the qualification criteria is flimsy and now we have NZ'ers playing for Qld and NSW, NSW players playing for Qld and vice versa - it is just a franchise now and therefore, whilst it is the best game to watch, the result means nothing.

I would much prefer watching Wests Tigers and I am glad the silly season is now completed. Bring on Friday and the finals.

I think people who are old enough to remember QLD being flogged year in and year out appreciate that it's been a real contest these last three decades, but have a chuckle at the amount of manufactured passion that's continuously created by the NSW media. Queensland is a very different place, you simply can't replicate their attitude and their feelings towards NSW. Once a colonial outpost, the laughing stock of the Commonwealth and considered good for nothing else but beef and agriculture, it's now a modern, thriving, progressive state, who's future is bright. They have long memories

You cant tell me Origin means less to the players and fans than it used to. Forget about the Melbourne game, that was bordering on exhibition…the Sydney and Brisbane games were both crackers played in front of sold out crowds bursting with rabid fans who loved every minute of it.

The hatred may have diminished somewhat...but it is still there and we are seeing some extraordinary games of football. Club football does not compare one iota.

When I played I always strived to make rep sides because they were the true indicator of just how good you were as a player. Whilst I admit I didnt make too many, the ones I did play in were burnt into my memory and the pride and friendships forged remain to this day....some of them 20 years old. SOO is shown around the world and is the greatest show piece of this awesome sport. It is still relevant.

You'd have been gutted to miss a team because of a ring in.

Perhaps I am not illustrating my point well enough. Ok…

1\. SOO is a great game. It shows how good the game can be when you remove a significant constraint.

2\. Yes, players care about getting rep jerseys. That will never change. The mateship etc will always be there, but at the end of the careers, do players remember winning an origin series or a grand final? Take JT for example, I reckon he would trade all his winning origin series for a premiership

However, in either 1 or 2, the RESULT is inconsequential.

Agreed, the amount of marketing budget thrown at SOO, together with the unrelenting media could feed Ethiopia for a decade. I resent being told that QLD is made up of sub humans, I resent being told that I should be passionate about NSW and I hold my breath hoping Farah comes through unscathed. Origin is a massive circus, nothing more, nothing less and it appears to have duped thousands if not millions
