Injuries mount as Wests Tigers limp out of the Nines

It's hard to know what to make of the weekend's Auckland Nines tournament. For Wests Tigers it produced just one win from three matches. The bigger talking point will be the injuries to both Curtis Sironen (broken toe) and Mitchell Moses (shoulder).

Sironen's injury at this stage appears the bigger concern. Early reports suggest he'll miss 6 weeks. Lets hope it's just that! For Moses, scans taken most likely today will determine his future. Though they've been described as precautionary by the club which may indicate it's more likely a minor problem, unless of course scans produce a more grim reality.

Injuries are always a part of the game. Whether or not it's Nines football or NRL trial football, they'll always happen. The common denominator here is that it's pre season and players bodies are yet to reach the level of conditioning that is needed. It's a necessary evil really. Sironen and Moses' injuries only add to a list that already contains Tim Moltzen, Dene Halatau and David Nofoaluma. Nofoaluma though appears to have been held back as a precaution. Much like Robbie Farah the week before.

Ultimately, what did Wests Tigers gain out of the Nines? It doesn't appear a lot. For the majority it was a case of further getting rid of pre-season rust and getting some minutes into the legs which only aids there conditioning. Other than that there was at least some valuable top line football experience for the likes of rookies Moses, Kurtis Rowe, Manaia Cherrington and Delouise Hoeter. The experience alone will have done them the world of good.

Now though, the attention turns to Saturday night's final trial versus the Sharks at Remondis Stadium. One expects coach Mick Potter will name his round 1 team to start this trial and go from there. The club is hopeful that both Keith Galloway and Jack Buchanan will return whilst David Nofoaluma will hope for the same. Luke Brooks is another who they'll hope will return to the park this weekend.

No mention of Simona missing Round 1

Hope that means he there

I think we can cover the other injuries with equally qualified players

Lulia replacing Simona is a step backwards in all areas bar defence

I doubt Lulia will play on the wing…

Wing? Simona wasn't going to be on the wing, Richards and nofoaluma are the wingers, lulia will slot into the centres as cover

really?

Every article from the WT has Simona as a Winger?

All bar 1 of his Tries last year where while he was playing Wing?

Simona outside Lawrence will form a formidable combination if Rowdy has his speed back… The only place I have seen Simona will play Centre this year is on here and FB!

The problem is 4 of our top 5 3/4's are best suited to wing, with only Lawrence being better suited to centre.

Simona in lower grades has play almost exclusively centre (with a little bit of fullback) so he seems most likely to head to the centres, that said Richards seems to me like a candidate for the centres.

I would use Richards in the centres and have 2 speedy men on the flanks i.e Nofo and Simona.

lol last time i suggested Richards at centre I got shot down.

if he can play there then i'd be stoked for a lawrence/richards pairing Round 1.

When Richards first went to Wigan he played centre and Wigan were going to release him after his first year cause he was crap at centre, but they kept him and stuck him on the wing and then he was irreplaceable

Having said that I saw Lawrence and Richards as a centre/wing combo in the Trials - looked amazing.

Taking into account the form shown by Lawrence over most of last season I think that it is much more likely that Lulia will be replacing Lawrence. I very much hope however that Lawrence has improved his form to the extent that he can hold his first grade place.

Wests Tigers could be bolstered by the return of a number of players for this weekend’s trial match against the Cronulla Sharks at Remondis Stadium.

Halfback Luke Brooks has recovered well from a back injury and is expected to make his return, along with Nathan Brown (pectoral), David Nofoaluma (hamstring), Ava Seumanufagai (shoulder) and Jack Buchanan (ankle).

Keith Galloway is also a slight chance of making his return from a toe injury, however the prop will be monitored further throughout this week.

Following on from the NRL Auckland Nines tournament, scans on Mitchell Moses’ shoulder have revealed no major damage, however the five-eighth will miss this weekend’s trial match.

Curtis Sironen underwent surgery on his foot yesterday, revealing further damage than originally diagnosed with the back-rower now set to miss 12 weeks.

Precautionary scans on Liam Fulton’s shoulder have revealed no major damage, however he will also miss this week’s trial match against Cronulla.

Sauaso Sue suffered a minor contusion to his shoulder in Saturday’s NSW Cup trial against Mounties and will not play this weekend.

Tim Simona has progressed well from his shoulder surgery and is a slight chance of making a return in Round 1.

Tim Moltzen will see his surgeon in two weeks, with a more accurate timeline on his return to come following that.

Coach Mick Potter will name his side to face the Sharks tomorrow afternoon.

PLAYER INJURIES & EXPECTED RETURN
Mitchell Moses (Shoulder, Round 1)
Curtis Sironen (Foot, 12 weeks)
Liam Fulton (Pectoral, 1 week)
Sauaso Sue (Shoulder 1 week)
Tim Simona (Shoulder, Round 1/2)
Dene Halatau (Ankle, 12 weeks)
Tim Moltzen (Knee, indefinite)

Outside Sirro thats much better news then I anticipated.

imo Don't risk Galloway after the the time it has taken already.

Let him come back from the bench in the NRL proper.
