I bet Souths think it is important to win round 1.

Souths are screwed once they lose the Charity Shield

Is the only thing they are a chance to win all year

Give Dr. Ice a break!
Good on you mate for giving some interesting stats.
Even if they aren't of much importance I can tell you are very excited for the season to begin! Like many of us here.
Good stuff, go the tigers!

I guess the point is, round one results are far from a good indicator of the year to come.
I agree with this.

I hope we lap the Sharkies, but early year is their strength, when your game plan is 5 hit ups and a kick, early season rustiness is not an issue, and their style of play takes it toll on players more than more expansive football, Id rather play the sharkies at another time of year. We should still smash them!

Obviously better to win than to lose. However, definitely not life and death. If you had the choice of:

(a) team win but pick up long term injuries to key players

or

(b) team lose by 50 points and sit dead last,

then I would take option (b).

I think the point of this question is the "flying under the radar" element. By winning the first round, many teams take notice of you straight away. Given we are one of the favourites this year, we will be expected to win. We will actually attract more attention if we lose and our credentials for favouritism will be questioned.

Regardless, we should be aiming to win every match held at our suburban home grounds so in this instance, a win in the first round is required.

What kind of question is that? We don't wanna win? R u guys serious?

Win as much games as we can.

Go Tigers!!!!!!!!!!

Rep points for effort Dr Ice

Its important to win as many games as possible, It buys you some slack down the track, But as most wise heads say the early months are about getting your side up there with as favourable a crack at the important part of the Semi's.

Top 4 is the target.

It's always one game at a time. I consider this game just as important as a mid season or end of season game… a win is a win, 2 points is 2 points and the next game is always the most important.

OK... I am out of clichés.

Best to dispatch the Sharks now while they are still getting there new team together - as I have a feeling if they click they will make a late run for the finals - and not a BS run like they did last year (woohoo!! we won 3 games in a month!!) - I mean an actual run, much like what we did leading into the finals.

Beat them by 14 (my hot tip) and move on to Manly up at Blue-tongue the following Friday, and shellack them.

Winning any game is good, especially if we are injury struck in the middle of the season again. Any and all competition points help.

Despite this I still want to win by 50!!! However win, lose or draw, Round 1 is not always the best indicator of success for the remainder of the year. We have had a good record winning Round 1 over the years, however our worst first game performance was in 2005.
It is a very long season, especially for us supporters of the Wests Tigers who are used to the ups and downs (and we get that in each game).

i cut your post short cause I think your over analyzing it (been guilty of it myself). its good to win as many games as we can. putting emphasis on one round more than another (especially so early) i think comes more under 'superstition' than anything else.

it would be fantastic not to lose a season, semi or GF game… go through completely undefeated... however im of the opinion that you probably learn alot more from your losses. so dropping a few games along the way aren't going to worry me (depending on how horrible we play ofcourse).

p.s. dr ice… there are a few ppl on this forum who do nothing but put crap on ppl - just ignore them...

Yes, those 2 points might just make the difference later on in the season, but, a loss will not mean the end of the world!

Great thread Dr Ice, really itneresting theory, especially give how much people in the media and here on the forum even more so react to one loss I think that gives us a real understanding that whether we win or loose perhaps we shouldnt overreact

Its a rediculous question IMO. I don't think there will be too many people worrying about stats on Sunday night if we win

Exactly.

Would anybody here (including the original poster) actually take the loss if given the option of a win or loss against the Sharks this Sunday?

I'm sorry but if the answer is yes, then you are a screw loose. 😕

The win at all costs determination and attitude will ALWAYS see you end up better off than any ridiculous over-analyzed statistical strategy.
