Isaiah Papali’i #265

Is Paul Kent openly encouraging Papalii to break his contract .Why does Kent hate the tigers so much . He was even trying to insinuate Ricky was right about the 12 year old . The NRL obviously don't agree with him $25000 which he must pay himself and an almost unheard of 1 week ban
Ratbag is a fair description of the only person to say ref and bunker got it right and also Ricky got it right

Every Monday on the "teeing off" segment - Kent talks about his biggest gripe in the game - it is always something the Tigers have done and he will get real trivial just to have a whinge

360 last night.

Worth a watch.
AD is on the episode.
It was worth the watch Demps.
I wonder why the club blocked Doueihi from going to Storm? Adam seemed a little disappointed he missed out on an opportunity to grow his game.
This is what I don’t understand about the club, if they want to be a development club, why refuse to develop a player?

Tim you need to say something PLEASE we are being shafted and ridiculed even Douehi wanted to be lent to storm
So far we've signed almost no one
At least 1 of our 2 Marquee signings wants out
Our main feeder squad the NSW cup side are defensively a joke
We let Luciano go early We lend out Nofo
We are perceived as a club full of disharmony
In terms of new signings which you said must wait till new coach in place and that's been months now
Tim your legion of fans need to hear from you WTF is going on !

Even if it means bumping his offer a little they should, this guy and Api are literally the form players in their positions in the comp at the moment. We haven't accommodated players of that status in a long time, they'd make a huge difference to the outlook of this team

Thank for replies. Didn’t mean to put words in your mouth. I’m just saying why I think there is noise. Unfortunately top players don’t go to bottom 4 clubs for the fair market price.
I respect your views and can understand why there is noise.

The point I would like to make is that at the time that we signed Papali'i way back in November 2021 he was already acknowledged as the best second rower in the game, having won the Dally M.

Sure he has followed up with great form this season but obviously if you are acknowledged as the best in the game in your position you would expect to be signed up for good money. Wests Tigers were also taking a risk no knowing whether there may be form slumps serious injuries etc.

At the time Parramatta were offering him a pittance and we offered him 2-3 times more which he and his manager couldn't sign up to quick enough, and for 3 years to boot.

This was also at a time with end of season reviews and question marks about the coach and his future constantly being bandied about in the media.

Also at the same time Luciano and his manager were asking for 700k which I suspect everyone, including Papali'i and his manager would have thought was overs, and taking into account that just about everyone thought that Papali'i was a better player all round than Luciano yet they still accepted 1.9 million over 3 years.

Obviously they thought it was a great deal and that they were getting top dollar and took it thinking there was no chance Luciano would eventually get offered more from the Cowboys, believing they were getting top dollar and also should have been under no illusion that they were signing up for a bottom 4 team, which all the so called experts were tipping.

So the point I am making is that at the time they thought they were getting better than fair money to go to a bottom 4 team.

Can't help buyer regret, it happens all the time, things change all the time and you take a risk with anything that you do, you just have to learn to live with it.

The contract has been signed and he is obliged to honour it for the next 3 years.

It's interesting how rugby league tolerates and even supports players who backflip. I've read a couple of articles recently about Oscar Piastri's attempts to get out of the last year of his contract to drive for McLaren in 2023. The articles have been quite scathing of Piastri and his management. Contrast the stories around Paps which are either supportive or, at worst, neutral.
I really worry about the message we send to young people about honouring contracts.

I'm going to resist my natural inclination to catastrophise, and assume he is coming. I feel the situations are different to Moses, Matterson and the Lawnmower man, in that we had already signed them and they had played for us. I felt it was weak of all of them to break their contracts but we have benefitted from this 'change of heart' situation too: most recently with Brent Naden.

But if IP is allowed to wriggle out of a contract before he has even played, then it would spell the end of any remaining scrap of the idea of the competition being fair. Lower teams will be used (like they already are but worse) to extract bigger salaries at bigger clubs who will magically find funds to grant this (thank you TPAs) and lower teams will be stuck at the bottom. It's already a very crooked system, with no appetite at all by private clubs to create anything resembling a fair competition.

Maybe I'm bitter. I just gave up my membership after 11 years, as the pockets of joy and community I feel with fans, are getting fewer and fewer, and there are other things to do with the time and money. Of course I don't want a player who is not happy to be here, but if he is allowed to go, then they should admit the NRL doesn't care about loads of teams and their fans. They proved it once before in 99. Now they are doing it by slow attrition.

Apologies for long rave.
Mate , I feel the same . Our weak front office needs to go . They weakly rolled over with the Cowboys game & they will do the same with Papalii. This joint will never get its strong culture back until we have strong leaders at the helm . Not only would it stop player from reneging on their contracts, it would actually attract players because they could trust the front office would stand up for them . Pascoe & Hagalis need to go.

Just imagine if Pap received a pretty bad injury this year that would take him out for 1.5 to 2 years. Then the club turned around and said "actually its not in the best interest of the club to accept Papalii" or "its just to hard for the club to help with rehabilitation".
We wouldn't even be able to entertain the idea.
This is where the NRL and RLPA are in the wrong with how contracts are drawn out and honoured.
