Match Report: Intrust Super Premiership Round 1

Wests Tigers Intrust Super Premiership side have gone down 42-0 to the Wyong Roos on Saturday in wet and tough conditions at Morry Breen Oval.

With rain and howling wind featuring prominently throughout the match, David Heath's side were left to rue a number of missed attacking opportunities in the first half, with the home side making the most of their chances to emerge with a comfortable 42-point win.

The match began in perfect fashion for Wyong, who quickly built a two-try lead through Chris Centrone and Chris Smith to lead 8-0 after the first ten minutes of play.

However, Josh Mantellato's two sideline conversions were waved away, giving Wests Tigers somewhat of a repreive after a dominant opening period from the home side.

Nathan Milone and Watson Heleta went close to bringing Wests Tigers back into the match after some strong defence forced errors from the hosts, but the final pass and kick was lacking.

It proved to be costly for Wests Tigers, as Wyong took advantage of a chance just before the break to extend their lead through Jayden Nikorima down the right wing.

Mantellato's third conversion attempt was waved away, leaving it at 12-0.

Running with the win in the second half, Wyong began where they left off in the first, with the kicking game of Tyler Cornish and Nikorima causing all sorts of problems for the visitors.

After Brock Gray crashed over in the 42nd minute, Dale Copley would inflict more pain with a quick double — giving Wyong a commanding 28-0 lead with still 20 minutes to play.

Threatening to score seemingly every time they attacked Wests Tigers' right edge, Nikorima's kicking game continued to pin the visitors on their own line, allowing Centrone to take advantage of an attempted shift to the left to swoop on an intercept and run the better part of 50m to score under the posts.

Copley would then complete his hat-trick in the final 10 minutes of the match after a grubber from Mitch Williams found the centre down the short side — taking the score to 38-0.

As the siren sounded, Mantellato would complete a stellar day out for the home side, crashing over in the corner to give the Roos a commanding 42-point victory in the end.

FULL TIME — Wyong Roos 42 (Copley 3, Centrone 2, Smith, Gray, Mantellato tries; 5/8 goals) def. Wests Tigers 0 at Morry Breen Oval

Copley is too good to be playing State Cup, it's a shame the same can't be said for any of our outside backs in State Cup at this stage…

I thought they were trying to offload Copley…. He'd be a good pick up for us

Yep ,always had big wraps on him Ink

Take him in a heart beat , he could possibly be the pick up that might just about bring everything together

Yeah well watch this space if Simona is cleared from the books. I suspect Copley will end up here or at the Titans and if he was going to the Titans I would've thought it would already have happened…I guess that depends if the club actually rate him though!

Completely different player , pretty big body , handy defender and a fair bit of speed

Was at the game , unfortunately. Very poor effort by our squad. No one looked interested, our forward pack got dominated and their halves (Cornish & Nikorima ) completely controlling the match. Copley also played well for them . The only Tiger to catch my eye was our centre Tali looks like a interesting prospect

Tali is talented and it will be interesting to watch his progress this year. The fact we can't afford to buy increases the pressure on our junior clubs to produce talent. In Suli and Tali two good prospects have emerged. Well done.

If we needed to tank a match in order to allow Copley to star so he can sign for us then so be it.

Extremely disapointing result. A very strong squad, although i do get the feeling this isn't a wet weather kind of team

I think you will find Simona's contact money..if he gets rubbed out..will balance our books, doubt we would have cap space even if the Chooks decide to pay a fair chunk of his wages

Our books are balanced. Anything which suggests otherwise is just lazy journalism. When Simona is terminated his value in the cap will be available, unless we choose to promote a youngster to the top 25 instead. Frustrating though that we can't act until his punishment is delivered as he's still taking cap space for now.

If that is the case, why were the NRL going to stand down either Taylor or Idris from playing in round one due to salary cap breaches but than got dispensation after Simona was stood down….By the way this was not something I read from the Tele crap and it came from a guy who used to worked in our football operations but now has a job with the NRL
