It's time to take the fight back to HBG

I am not picking on you but I think you're naive and lack experience.

Read about Man United and their owners to understand how clubs can be destroyed by people that never walk onto the pitch. Better yet, apply your comment to your own workplace and see if it rings true.
I have no douby they're a hindrance to our success, but we need to find a way past that. You can have as many protests and things as you want, but more people will buy merch, buy tickets, click on articles, the IP will be there so at the governace level, nothing is going to change.

Great owners are more likely to make successful team, Crappy owners are more likely to create unsuccessful teams.
At the same time, great owners will not always make successful teams.

But, within the grey, we need to find a way to invest the extra funds for the future.

In terms of my own naivety, I've actually worked with amateur and professional sporting teams. I've worked with amateur and high performance athletes and I know exactly the type of support they need.

Our club doesn't give them that. Maybe at NRL level they do, but definitely not at levels below that.

We are independent and the CEO should fight to keep it that way. HBG are our parent company, but now that we are making profits, we will get the $1-2m each year from them in order for them to stay true to their Charter.

Unfortunately, an independent board is only a partial solution. Until HBG change the balance of their responsibilities to community and Wests Tigers in relation to the investment of money the realisation of what we can be as a club is not going to happen.
I think we all need to accept HBG isn't investing in this Club. Shaun needs to go in and get as many sponsors as he can, get Govt grants, get Universities to send their students etc to give our pathways the support they need.

Honestly, for now, screw the NRL team.

We can't call ourselves independent and then run to our Daddy for money at the same time.

Where did you get the idea that we are independent?

Shaun needs to consult, and get agreement from, multiple boards before he can do anything substantial. He said so himself and our current board is stacked with HBG/Magpies and only 2 independents. They have made absolutely certain we are NOT independent.

We have had independent people on the Board before, where did that get us?

I truly don't think Board and HBG is our biggest problem.

They're crappy owners, they don't provide us with funding, connections or support. I understand that and that sucks! But, we cannot get rid of them.

The idea that they hinder our progression is something I doubt.

If we are getting another $10m from the NRL, Shaun has every right to spend it as he sees fit without Board approval. Maybe Lee H or Pascoe or Mayer or Humpty, genuine question, have they ever come out and said HBG blocked how they wanted to spend our money? Someone who's been more involved on this topic for 20 years ago may know the answer to this.
On one hand people want HBG less involved, but at the same time want them to spend more money? That usually results in giving up a board spot (i.e Balmain's).

The only realistic way the club ever achieves a genuine semblance of independence is to be a profitable business that's less reliant on HBG financially. The club then gets a bit of a shot to put forwards more independent directors.

Perfectly summed up.

They made a profit for the first time in forever & they outed the independents and took over majority board.

On paper and our charter at least, we are supposed to be independent.

Major things like sponsor approval, head coach etc require Board approval which is fair but where WT want to spend their money, that's up to CEO.

If Shaun wants to invest $500k and hire better physios and trainers for our JF team, I don't think he would need the Board's approval.

The accountability lies with the CEO on paper and if HBG is interfering then he needs to go public. Have any other CEOs gone public about any of this?

Hi Papacito, I might be wrong, but doesn't an independent Board or Board member have to act legally in the best interest of the owners? In this case, it would be HBG, Western Suburbs Magpies & Balmain Tigers.

I wouldn't say running to daddy. HBG are constitutionally bound to fund and support Rugby League in the region. The only independence was related to certain decision making. I expect it was Richos decision to make a profit to try and make up the difference between what was.allocated and what is needed to be competitive.

Ok. If it's as simple as reading the Panthers website to understand what development is, I can't understand why our mob can't copy that and get results.

That's what I was saying.

If we are copying and pasting from other teams, the All Blacks have a great system too.
Panthers and All Blacks have great systems that young players identify with, and aspire to be a Panther or an All Black. Culture, identity and success. We don't have any of those. Shaun was at Penrith, he knows the level of investment required.

This article was written over 3 years ago, raises some interesting points, let me know if you can't read it and I'll copy it for you.

It's a good point.

But the governance responsibility of all directors is to Wests Tigers Pty Ltd legal entity first and foremost.

This is where that naivety shines through.
