Ivan Cleary - THREAD..

His take on the initial meeting with Penrith was interesting. According to IC:

They brought up the coaching future at Penrith. He reminded them he had a contract at WT and that was it. He was surprised when Griffin got the elbow.

So… no contract, no expression of interest in 2019.

Ivan knew what Penrith intended to do re Griffith. Just not when.

What he's salty is about is Gus pulling the trigger now which forced Ivans intentions out.

Penrith tried to snooker him into a decision now, instead of the off season.

I agree and I hope this pisses IC and all the Cleary’s. And I hope they take revenge… or just simply all move forward with WT! There is a little hope left in me still.

I'm over the moon. 2 years left with Ivan. How long will Wayne be at the Broncos, Seibold at Souths, Mary at St George? We've got more than enough out of this to have players feel comfortable in the off season to sign on with us. They know we've got a great coach and strong management. If we get Nathan that great, if not I wish him the best of luck at the Panthers, he seems like a great kid.

The management at Penrith however I've had a gut full of. I don't think I'll ever forgive them for the last week. Our club has grown this week and we should all be proud. Who knows what will happen over the next two years. Ivan might not do well and then we'll feel alright to see him move on. I however believe he'll continue to build on a team that's exceeded my expectations this year and if the club overall goes from strength to strength then hopefully he goes on to build a dynasty here with Go and Pascoe. Over time clubs develop war stories and in the last week we had an huge one. Matches between Penrith and West Tigers will never be the same again. I hope we meet them in the eight this year and tear them a new one!

This story is looking like a Tarantino film with so many perspectives on the same story. Now the Ivan version.

Ivan goes to a casual coffee with his old mate O'Neil at Penrith. Dave is shooting the breeze about the future at Penrith "Would you ever come back Ivan?" "Yeah Dave I would… but I've got this contract with the Tigers so..." "Undersood mate - flat whites on me..."

Next thing Ivan is at home playing Lego with Nathan when the news comes that Griffin has been fired. Thinks back to his coffee and concludes he better tell Go and Pascoe since I might look bad. Does so. Gets back to deciding whether Luke Garner should start or go from the bench...

Sits at home watching a lot of rubbish from reporting. Can barely concentrate on the playdough with Nathan. Go and Pascoe tell him relax we'll do the press. That doesn't solve the problem entirely. Resolves to do press conference.

Wests Tigers Head Coach Ivan Cleary addressed the media this morning ahead of Sunday's game with the Canberra Raiders.

Read below what Cleary said in full:

"I have been very disappointed with the amount of misinformation surrounding myself and my family this week.

I intend to make this statement to clarify my position and following this statement I will not be taking any questions on the matter.

When I was approached by the Panthers, initially I had no idea that it was about coaching at the club. I was told at that meeting that the club were looking at the future of the Head Coach position.
\
\
I advised the Panthers of my ongoing contract statues with the Wests Tigers. I subsequently advised the Chair and CEO of the Wests Tigers of the discussions I had with the Panthers. I was as surprised as anyone on the announcement of the dismissal of Anthony Griffin.

I have not received any offer from the Panthers, nor have I asked the Wests Tigers for a release. I am enjoying my contribution to the growth of this club.

Everyone associated with this club should be proud of the direction it is heading in. I am privileged to be a part of this journey and respect the contract I have with Wests Tigers. I respect all of the people, and supporters involved with this club, and I intend to honour this contract.

It is common knowledge that my son Nathan and I have acknowledged our desire to work together at some time. That remains the case.

Today I am absolutely focused on our match with Canberra and am now happy to take any questions on Sunday's game.

Clearys presser was downright lame ..

He read from a pre written statement lol

He obviously been offered a gig from the Panthers and when Pascoe and the board knocked it on the head he was upset !

That’s why it’s taken him a week to stop sooking and front the media !

Now he’s said he will see out his contract…

What else was he supposed to say ??

When he goes in 2 years you’ll all cry poor why the club didn’t release him

Why not say this Tuesday. Feel the anger and emotion from all parties has been a waste of time. I understand and acknowledge he has been hurt by this and don't feel good about that, I also feel he could have hosed it down.

A possible explanation is that he had a decision to make, about an option he shouldn't have been considering. Will forgive and move on, but things like this make me hate the game.

Why wasn't Ivan allowed to consider any offers?

If Penrith came to him and offered 2021, or even 2019, why can't Ivan consider it? Any reasonable human would take some time to consider attractive job offers, even if they were under a contract.

Cleary has decided not to take up any offers, whatever they may or may not be, from Penrith at this time. So apart from the fact that Penrith blew up their own coaching ship and yanked Cleary into the subsequent mess, we are actually no different factually than we were a week ago - Cleary 2.5 years to run on his deal.

Anyone who says Ivan is poison or his position is untenable isn't thinking straight - tainted by the innuendo of a week of media. He hasn't done anything illegal.

Sure Ivan could have saved himself some grief by speaking out earlier in the week. We don't know the rationale at this time why he didn't speak sooner, maybe it will come out over time. Maybe he underestimated the media hubbub and the comments Penrith would make. Maybe there was indeed a really lucrative offer and he needed time to consider his options. Maybe he simply didn't have the time - I know I wouldn't be able to just drop everything and take on a press conference at short notice; there are things to be done this week.

I also wanted to add, this idea that "things like this make me hate the game". Well anyone who bought into the innuendo and nonsense this week, posting and reading and offering opinions and chasing up - that's what drives most of what you are saying you don't like.

Before the internet this would have been a bit of a story in the papers, maybe some pub talk, but the days would have moved too quickly and we'd have reached Saturday and Ivan would have said "no story, I'm saying". But modern-day 24/7 news cycles… heck Fox have a dedicated League channel and eat up this kind of material; forums and "whispers" online columns - if you don't like it, don't contribute. There would be no noise if there was no audience for the noise.

The NRL media machine.
Big business

Wouldn't surprise me if an extension for Ivan is being looked at …for a guy who has a 45% win record and whist improvements have been made hasn't really proven anything..... would mean we have learnt nothing from Sheens when ironically the same club courted him we shat ourselves and extended only to sack him a year later...

Meh ….
Read from a pre- prepared statement
Looked rattled

And how would you look after a week like that Mr Hobo?
Another nothing person for you I suppose.

He should’ve nipped it in the bud earlier in the week ..

What was the hold up ?

Ivan looked like he’d just been handed a 2 year good behaviour bond and sentenced to home detention.
The Tigers Board nipped this in the bud pretty quickly, don’t be disillusioned- Ivan had his pencil case packed, the panthers offer was verbal initially (with a pre conceived contract ready for activation, for 2019) with Ivan to approach the Tigers for a release then once granted the invisible ink on the 2019 contract would materialise with a whiff of fresh mountain air.
The delay was waiting for the board to rollover and sanction Ivan’s release but alas…checkmate.
Call me a mug if you like but I think the Tigers Board grew up this week.
My option still remains that Ivan is now poison though.

Agreed !!

Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Your not James Pooper are you? Lol

Can't believe the number of hysterical drama queens posting on this topic.

You do my head in. Ivan said himself what the situation was and you are still speculating about what he has or has not done. Give it a rest, you and Ken Y too.

As to why he read from a statement and didn't take questions - obvious, it would have been a 2-hour presser with tonnes and tonnes of media speculation and stupid repeated questions. Best avoided.

Good Post ST - lot of sense there and I agree with you. We have grown up. The Tigers that is, not necessarily everyone on the Forum (but they are entitled to their opinion).

So many people still giving it to Ivan.

He has done nothing wrong. Zip.
Now the same people are saying if we extend Ivan the club is still a nut case?

I would extend him for improving our defense this year alone!

The biggest thing I have found this week…is how judgemental and detracting people are, without knowing all the true facts..

I said earlier that I would wait for a statement from the WTs club....I have that now and Iam quite happy to have Ivan here for the next 2 years...whatever he wishes to do after that is really up to him, whether he extends with us or moves on...he is HONOURING his contract...he is a good person and should be treated as such, not belittled because it suits ppl to do so...

Time for Smoking Gun to stop firing blanks. Reckons he is in the know at the club. On Wednesday he had the inside goss on Penrith paying for our next coach and giving us players. Needs to change his name to Dirty Diaper.

Didn’t exactly say that.
Anyway so what? Most of us are firing blanks.
Keep him in the circle for me ….. better than some dribble that you read on here.

I think the West Tigers as a club have overcame a huge week of adversity and a week which moves forward from previous years of mismanagement. We can all continue to speculate and be controlled by the media clowns, but one things for sure, Pascoe & Go portrayed our club in such a professional manner.
I'm hoping this week has sent a huge message to other clubs, players and reporters that we wont play stupid games at the expense of the clubs reputation which we are continuing to build. The panthers management look pretty silly and we look like we are club that protects their own and is not to be messed with. Onwards and upwards mighty Tigers.

Probably the most accurate scenario - except for the playdough, Ivan is old school, it would have been plasticine.
