What must he be thinking at the moment? he's built that team from scratch and now he's just going to walk away from it just as they are about to develop into the strongest team in the clubs history. Sure Penrith have the potential to be a powerhouse given the junior nursery, however there isn't alot to suggest the Panthers have much going for them at all in the short-term. On the other hand the Warriors have all the hallmarks of being a benchmark team for the next 5 yrs with guns like Locke and Johnson, not to mention a gun NYC side. And he's just gonna decide to walk away? madness :crazy

Ivan's head has been on and off the chopping board since his second season over there, including the beginning and mid season of this year. This was a no brainer for him. He now has financial and employment stability for a while longer in his life. Good luck to him.

Was thinking exactly the same thing. Brian McClennan is walking into a pretty strong side. They're losing Hohaia to the UK but have picked up Nathan Friend, a more than suitable replacement!
Are there any other movements happening across the dutch for 2012? If they can keep a relatively similar squad then they'll be just as if not more stronger next season.

I think it's all about the challenge too…I mean look at Wayne Bennett when he left brisbane to go to st george, similar here, maybe cleary just needs a new challenge and he'll have just that at Penrith...i'm hoping the Warriors send him out with a GF victory...go the warriors!

With the junior talent available there, he'd be able to steer them to two more grand finals.

I don't agree that he has left for stability at penriff. Gould will cut him loose if he doesn't meet expectations.

They had just lost 4 on the trot, warriors wouldnt extend his deal past the current one year remaining, Penrith offered three with no doubt a substantial pay increase….I dont think he'll be regretting too much.
Even at the time of the deal, where they are now is what he was working towards

at the time warriors didn't look like making the grand final. he has coached over 120+ games from what I know so he is easily the longest serving coach at the club.

He's probably thinking about the long-term big-money contract he's got at Penrith. He's probably not thinking about how he whiteanted the previous coach to get the gig at the Warriors… Allegedly...

Sucks to be him, especially because Panthers suck and will be bottom 4 next year for sure.
Warriors >
Locke & Johnson = Amazing talents.

NZ has a whole country of possibly talents, Islanders are naturally athletic.
I'm happy to see them make the GF this year after being up there many times and not making a massive splash.

Plenty of islanders out Penrith way Demps. Panthers will be a lot better next year with some stability. They have some reasonable players…

He's done a very good job with the Warriors, especially since they aren't the most patient team with coaches. Took over in 2006 and missed the 8 because of a salary cap breach in seasons past. 2007 and 2008 they made the 8\. 2009 they had a bad year (with a clear off field reason), before getting back on track in 2010 making the finals again, before making the big one this year. He's only missed the finals twice in six seasons, and both because of off field issues, beyond his control.

Funny how the unlikeliest players make good coaches
If you had said to me during their playing careers that
Tim Sheens ,Wayne Bennett ,Ivan Cleary ,Des Hasler etc would make great coaches i would say you were :crazy

agree with all except clearly, i always saw clearly has a really smart player, mind you ive thought there were other players who'd make great coaches and failed (Taylor, Langmack are standouts)

Id say cleary just wanted to come home

I still think Langmack would make a good coach. There aren't a lot of people around with a a smarter football brain. He was just unlucky in the fact when he got a shot, it was with an absolutley useless Rabbitohs side. A coach can't be a miracle worker, he at leasts needs a few decent cattle, and at Souths he didn't have that, which was unfortunate, because that stint cost him his coaching career

Langmack would always struggle with man management as he too much "one of the boys " coaches They rarely work Like Roycey Simmons as well
All others area they would ace it
