Jahream Bula #269

Bula can play the running style of fullback and there is no better example of that when he ran around the Knights' centre to score. He also has the ability to play second 5/8 as per Hodgson. With Pearce Paul, he now has the option to receive his passes in traffic as per his try against the Eels. He is our most dangerous attacking player which is highlighted by the attention he receives from defenders. With Doueihi now in form, he provides another facet of attack from his second phase.

Bula would be hard pressed to find a coach who is more sympathetic towards his style of play.

Look closely and the space we were getting on the right was because of Bula threatening and drawing in defenders. Once we have Taylan and Luai back you have multiple running threats that will open the left and right in attack. It can be counter productive as it will require more discipline playing the correct side in attack, it can also look very clunky when it doesn't work, however once it clicks it will be a thing of beauty.

The problem we have is a player like Clint Gutherson is on $900k at the Dragons and he's definitely not worth that sort of money. We haven't made the finals in 15 years and we're coming off the back of 3 wooden spoons. We're always going to be paying overs for players.

On today's game, 2 tries, 188 run metres, 52 post contact metres, 2 line breaks, 1 line break assist and 1 try assist is not a bad return at all.

If someone has an idea for an alternative option, I'm all ears, otherwise I think we need to try and retain him at $900k, particularly given it's an option we added to his current contract

The thing is he's worth more to other clubs then us

I would pay him
800k in 27
825K in 28
875k in 29
950K in 30
1.1M in 31

Average out at 910K over 5 years

I would pay him $900k for the fact we know that 9.9/10 he is safe under the high ball...even when he is under pressure. I would say he is close to the best in the NRL when it comes to kicks diffused. Im sure there is a stat out there that may prove or disprove my theory.

Not sure about this one aye. He's pretty safe under the high ball but he's come off 2nd best a couple of times so far this season.

A lot has changed in a short space of time though with regards the narrative about the tigers. Team on the up with a bullet, Benji factor with player environment, players improving within the system ( Pole, Twal) and players coming improving as well (KPP for example). We don’t need to pay overs any more. In fact, we may have got to the sweet spot of players staying for a bit less than they could get at other weaker clubs because of all of the above. Incredible turnaround in fortunes. Seeds were sewn last year by Richo and Benji and we are seeing the results not just on the field but in the media coverage and ultimately in recruitment. Destination club!

If all is good why has he not signed yet , I can’t see one reason not to if you want to be hear .
Team looks happy
Team going very well
Players improved in off season led by Twally , KPP , Madden , AD , and rest all putting in.
Coach can coach , proof now with player who want to be hear are getting better they have bought in to coach’s way .
Bulla needs to make a call

Wests Tigers fans need Jahream Bula to stay. Phil Gould isn’t helping

There were two questions worth asking after the Wests Tigers continued their magical run on Sunday afternoon.

Firstly, what is happening with the future of gun fullback Jahream Bula?

And secondly, why is Canterbury boss Phil Gould, in his job at Nine, allowed to repeatedly heap praise on the 24-year-old, who has been linked with a move to the Bulldogs during the free-to-air coverage?

Let’s start with Gould’s Bula love-in on Sunday. In commentary during Nine’s coverage, Gould did not hide his admiration for Bula’s display, in which he scored two tries, at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

“That’s an athlete.

“Gee-whiz he’s going to be a good player.
He’s just creamy, so fluid, beautiful, like apple pie on a Sunday.”

Brenton Speed, who was sitting next to Gould in the commentary box, then pointed out “plenty of other clubs are monitoring Jahream Bula and his contract situation”.

“Hopefully from a neutral’s perspective, and a Wests Tigers perspective, he stays at this club, but it will be tough to keep him,” Speed said.

Gould kept quiet, then Nine cut to a commercial break.
Good things are happening at the Tigers right now, and Bula is arguably the best player to come through the grades since the old owner of the club’s No.1 jersey, James Tedesco.

He can run, he can leap, and when you watch him live, it’s incredible to see the ease with which he moves in backplay, appearing to float over the turf before putting himself in a position to receive the ball.

As it stands, Bula has a mutual option in his deal for 2027. The Tigers have until next month to activate the club option, to retain Bula on a salary of $900,000. Arguably, the Tigers would be wasting their time taking up the extra 12 months if Bula had no appetite to stick around beyond 2027.

Bula can activate the option, worth $800,000, or walk away and pursue a better offer elsewhere.

This is where Gould and the Bulldogs come into the picture. And why so many Tigers fans would have winced every time Gould spoke about Bula.

Last year, Gould used his media platform to speak glowingly about Bula’s Tigers teammate Lachie Galvin. If you needed a refresher, Gould described Galvin as the best teenage footballer he had ever seen. Galvin is now a Bulldog.

It emerged late last year the NRL and Rugby League Players’ Association planned to clamp down on what commentators who held official positions at NRL clubs could say about contracted players.

The NRL put out a statement in the new year stating: “Clubs have been advised that the definition of tampering will now include certain public and private statements that could be seen as attempts to lure or entice a player to join another club.”

To be fair to Gould, he wouldn’t have been doing his job if he did not acknowledge Bula’s feats. But where do you draw the line? How do you separate praise from public courting?

Maybe someone should ask Bulldogs fullback Connor Tracey how he felt about one of his bosses speaking so glowingly about a rival fullback.

In the hope of getting a response from Gould himself, we sent him the following text: “Wanted to ask about game yesterday, and whether you might appreciate Tigers fans getting a little edgy, even angry, after hearing you speak so glowingly about Jahream Bula, a fullback who has already been linked to the Dogs.”

Gould responded with two words.

“Grow up.”

St George Illawarra’s pursuit of Cowboys fullback Scott Drinkwater late last week was significant for the Tigers because the Red V were also keeping tabs on Bula.

Bula deserves all the praise he gets. Fans love him. He is a cleanskin, a gentleman who loves his family and his faith.

It was not that long ago coach Benji Marshall was still the biggest drawcard with young Tigers supporters. Now, the fans’ idols are all on the park, with Bula and Jarome Luai, Adam Doueihi and Sunia Turuva.

The Tigers took years to overcome the loss of Tedesco. They can only hope Bula stays put. And that Gus can control himself the next time he calls a Tigers game on a Sunday. Maybe game-day catering can throw in a few apple pies.

compare that to every other FB in the comp. You will probably find he is up there with the best for kick diffusal. Especially considering most of his career he has had to take contested attacking kicks because teams roll through us.

The nine footy show had an interview with Bula. Benji is the key to keeping Bula. His praise and admiration for him as a coach and helping Bula personally was evident in his responses. He showed know evidence of player wanting to go anywhere.
I maintain there has been stalling in all contract negs since Richardson left it is very likely the hold up is just as much a club issue - Terrell has been vocal about it . Sean M was left holding the can and he can't do it all he needs some help.

Yeah the interview with the marly.chuck was interesting...pretty sure he said he occasionally gets emotional at training and Benji is great for him at those times.

Lots.of.footage of him with fans.pre game...he really is quite shy, awkward a bit and seems very introverted...a.first grade nrl.squad setting would be quite difficult for this type of persona id guess.

I.couldnt give a crap about the cap and what we may pay him....just want him signed...too many supercoach players here

I agree Ink. Thats why I was surprised to see him interacting with the crowd during the game. Bula seems an extremely popular guy amongst the players & highly respected by management. We just have to get it done

I'd like to see Bula encouraged to get more involved, ala Hodgson. Hodgo did play as an extra five-eighth and it's one of the reasons the 2005 Tigers were so potent in attack. The opposition didn't know who to defend or what was coming. Maybe there are more aspects to Bula's play that are yet to be unlocked. Time will tell.
