James Tamou - missing in action

We supposedly bought him for his leadership....not sure how he goes at training, but it's not translating to performance on the field. Captain at least should be leading by example...we don't have anyone setting defensive line speed and that's where our problems start...

Defence is an attitude, you hear it all the time. It's also about physics and inertia...if one player is charging at you at 20kmph, you should be aiming to match that and meet them head on, throw defending players 2 and 3 into the mix and the attacker should be getting driven backwards and put on their back. Instead we allow them to plough into the line and fold us backwards. It's a big effort area, but the good teams do it well.

Our mob don't even try...

He is, literally, playing the same as he did at Penrith.

I don't see why people are upset or surprised. 100% tackle efficiency, high 90s most weeks, sets the tone at training, does his role and does his role on the field.

He is 32. He is not going to 'lead your line'...that has to be one of the younger players. He is a defensive workhorse and a pro, but Fisher Harris led their pack's line speed.

He is doing for us exactly what he did for them.

Think i am in the minority. Think he's been okay. First half stint was good.

I know he doesn't set the world alight breaking tackles but is a solid defensive forward.

Just think Madge wanted more punch as we were 1000 points behind.

There was no way we were holding them out for 0 in the second half, i thought we would of had to score 42 to win.

The main thing was Madge's 'tone' post game..."just how the game rolled", terse and short.

He could have easily said "could not get him back, but he went 100% efficiency and is our leader".

Leaving your captain standing on the sidelines and then a weak comment post game is basically throwing him under the bus.

Madge threw the vets under the bus last year also obviously with Benji...and all off season with his comments inferring the vets did not match his own standards...and, which I agreed with totally.

But this time is surprising,

Maybe, don't think madge was in a talking mood and even when he is its always the PC line.
I didn't take that press conference as a shot at tamou, more a get me out of here
Tamou was the ultimate professional and kept himself the warm the whole time.

I think people are overplaying this whole captaincy thing on the field like it would've changed two-hoots. They prepare and train all week, discuss the game, have a game plan.
They can't be more prepared and don't need a pep talk to get them to start putting in what was missing the most "effort".

From all reports what Tamou is bringing is off field, showing them what it means to be a professional.
Arriving early, doing the extras, keeping his body 100%. I feel this is more important to our club then a "come on boys we can do this".

So few minutes in a devastating 1st half.
No return to the field in the 2nd half.
No appearance at the post match press conference, as captain.
No explanation at all by Madge.
What's the story.

I think it’s just that he’s a dud

How exactly is he is a dud?

He played 28 mins...

19 tackles at 100%
68 meters

For 28 mins, those are strong stats. The coach not giving him more time is beyond stupid.

I agree, I don't think Tamou did all that badly. Tried with the ball and defended well. The bigger question mark about him sits with Madge, why did he not give him a second stint? Was it as Jirskyr suggested, we were just trying to bash our way through with Mikaele and Stef to salvage a win?

Extrapolate those stats into a 50 minute appearance and they are impressive.

Tamou isn't bad but he isn't going to get us rolling forward ala Mikaele and Stef.

Yes, and it is exactly what he did last season. This is who is he.

Did anyone watch Penrith last year and see Fisher Harris and Kikau absolutely skittle teams...and say "geez, Tamou dominated"? Honestly? No.

He is playing the exact role...and now he is in a much weaker pack, people seem to have expected he starts dominating. He is 32. This is who he is and, yes, we need him. But we should not expect him to become Fisher Harris.

Tamou is a worker with great tackle efficiency. That is who he has been the last 3-4 years.

i said this in another post, a mate who has pretty good intel said Madge and Tamoa had a blow up in the shed at half time due to the game plan being all wrong, hence why he wasnt brought back on in the second half.

Well if this is true - Houston, we have a problem.

I agree re the Tamou performance. He actually did show some line speed a couple of times but nobody went with him. To be honest, he looked like he was seething waiting on the sideline.

Yesterday, when I believe it was 10-6 or 16-6, there was a loose ball which could have gone either way. Our player lost the ball, but it could easily have been ruled as a strip. Tamou was in the vicinity, he could have dived on the ball as he was closest. Instead, him and two others just stood there looking at it waiting for a whistle. I can't remember if it resulted in a try, but it certainly didn't help. The momentum was massively against us at the time. Those plays can make or break a game.

Tamou was 100% hooked. He didn't lead any line speed or do the stuff we call the "one percenters". He's supposed to be our captain. Embarrassing really. The only ones doing any leading out there were Doueihi and a little bit of Brooks.

No he’s not
At Penrith he got quick play the balls
With us he needs a forklift to get him on his feet .
And if he’s that good why isn’t he still at the riff ?
Cause he’s a PLODDER !

But this time is surprising,

I think you are over-analysing. Madge was so visibly upset he barely said more than 1 sentence about anything. They asked him about Tamou towards the end, I didn't expect him to suddenly change tone and start explaining why he did what he did. Madge didn't really want to answer any questions and got out of these as soon as he could, the old Wayne Bennett style of responding.

Maybe Madge told him he wouldn't go back on and then Tamou got upset. As I said, Madge kept both Garner and Mikaele back quite some period and finished the game with them, also he had to use a permanent sub for BJ, which meant I don't think Liddle got a break.

I saw Tamou on the sidelines shouting at the players at the start of the second half, then I stopped paying any attention to the sidelines.

Why renovate? Isn't the rustic nature of the facilities part of the attraction!

If there's truth to Tamou arguing with the coach I think this is very poor form on his part. Especially if it was front of other players.
