James Tedesco Debuting Too Early

Hey guys

This is a question that I have pondered for many years. I must admit that although I respect what Sheensy did in his early years at the club I have great anger at the final mistakes in team selection and recruiting and James Tedesco's debut back in 2012 I believe was one of them.

Although a number of James' injuries were the result of freak accidents I help but feel that he was brought into 1st grade at too early a stage of his career. He should of been allowed to play a few years in the NSW Cup strengthening his body for the rigours of 1st grade to go with his talent without the added pressure that the next level inevitably brings. I know this is really insignificant given his age and his outstanding performances but I really feel this has been highlighted by the fact Matt Moylan, Teddy's current rival to the NSW Fullback spot made his debut last year at the age of 22\. This is in to comparison to Teddy's age when he debuted of 19\. Just wondering what you guy think of this? I only raise this issue now considering the fact that the game is in deep discussion of future player welfare and these injuries will inevitably hamper him in his later years as a player.

I'll take any chance to bag sheens, but this isn't one of them. As mentioned a lot of tedescos injuries were freak ones. The one in his first game could have happened in warm up or playing nsw cup. Watching those first 30mins or whatever it was it was obvious he belonged in first grade.

22 minutes of first grade can never make that impact

has a lot more to do with S&C, the biomechanics of his movements and imo a lot of luck.

Pretty sure he did the ACL in that game before he had a hand on him, therefore wouldn't have mattered what grade he was in, it was just one of those things

the thing about teddy is all his injuries have been very different. yes all leg related, which could perhaps be linked to the way he runs and lack of self preservation at times.

but one was a ligament on the knee(ACL), the other a bone on the knee (patella) and the last an ankle injury. cant remember what the details for that one were.

the point is, he's not reinjuring the same thing repeatedly. which is the reason i chucked him in my fantasy team while others steered clear of an injury prone fullback, figured luck would swing his way and add in some S&C overhauls

Moylan wasn't good enough to debut at 19\. Tedesco was.
Word is they were shopping Moylan around before he came good.

Lots of factors come into the equation including the quality (or lack thereof) of other players in the squad in the same position and the fact that young stars are being watched by other clubs and will leave if they don't get a run. Tigers had Meany, Ayshford, Utai, molten and Mitch Brown to chose from at the time. I can't begrudge him debuting at a young age.

I would've played him from the bench in the 2011 Final Series if fit… Sheens wouldn't of because he was too stubborn, and too attached to select players within the NRL Squad.

If your good enough, your old enough!

People need to stop comparing Moylan to Teddy. Neither are ready for the SOO arena, plus they also need to understand politics plays a BIG part in Rep Selections. At this stage, Moylan has the better politicians selling his viability!

Lol at Sheens….the poor bastard is held responsible for plenty of the worlds problems by some fans. Tedesco's injuries to his ACL and his kneecap were just pure bad luck injuries that could have been sustained at any time or place on or off the footy field, they had nothing to do with him being too young for 1st grade. Remember Danny Galea just jogging back the 10 metres in the defensive line and snapping his Achilles, ending his season for us. Freak accidents and injuries will happen.

Aint that the truth.

Fumbled and bumbled his way through City Country yet comes out smelling like roses.

As Watto said , if your good enough your old enough

Obviously James ACL was near breaking point and would of happened if he was playing NYC or NSW Cup

The injury didn't happen under contact , remember that

Well no one laid a hand on him when he did his ACL, just stepped and "bang". and the broken knee cap was a result of a kamikaze run from the kick off and cleaning up Campese.

I agree with the OP to an extent.
I dont believe that good enough does mean old enough, I think that alot of players that are asked to debut young often end up with alot of injuries, some of which seem unlucky, but there does seem a much higher proportion. Not always when they are young, sometimes as they get older they have problems (at a higher proportion than those that advance normally).
Even the likes of Tim brasher had alot of injuries when he got a bit older.

Teddy certainly fits the bill for those that debuted young and have had injuries.

I think you are wrong. Teddy injuries could of happened anywhere. Sheens was excellent at managing run talent. Benji Marshall won us a comp when he was 19 and that team was littered with young guys.

You can probably blame out S&C program. Given the money our stars are getting its a vital aspect of being sustainably competitive and I think wit has underestimated thus….no money, too busy Infighting at board level to make effective decisions. We are much better placed now with jt implement best practice across a number of neglected areas.

Plus tedesco would handle soo no worries. He is better than Dugan and moylan. They are only warming his seat until next year.

Really it's his only decent run without injuries in first grade. He is playing in a team of rookies and he is a standout. Imagine him playing in a team of established stars.

I reckon he has been our best player this year and been instrumental in most of our wins. Plus we only been playing left side, wait till our right side fires and. Moylan is a five eight anyway only a matter of time. He is Lockyer reincarnated, he will playing 6 for penrith by end of this year.
